THE
TIGER
P7 students had a fantastic time at the Camp Breakthrough Residential Field triplast week. They
braved high-ropes, a zip-line and the camp cave. In the evenings, they enjoyed toasted
marshmallows, stories and campfire songs.
The P7 children were great ambassadors for the school. We were proud of their achievements.
They all tried their best and were caring, supportive and encouraging.
They learned the skills of collaboration, cooperation and communication. They also made new
friends and got to know each other better.

FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL
Dear Friends,
I recently attended the annual Association for
the Advancement of International Education
(AAIE) conference, and would like to share some
of my experiences with you.
The theme of the conference was Future
Leaders=Future Schools, and a feature of each
of the sessions I attended dealt with creating
leadership opportunities for our students. This
was evident even in the sessions which, at the
surface, did not seem to deal directly with
students and learning. For example, I attended a
session on school governance, and was pleased
to see that efforts were made to relate
governance directly to learning and students.
Other sessions which I found very useful were
sessions on child protection and mentoring in an
educational setting.
Here at Stonehill, we have a mentoring
programme for some of our educational staff
who are pursuing additional qualifications or
working on professional goals. The information
presented and discussions at this session will
help to improve our mentoring programme.
Finally, the AAIE conference is always a great
opportunity to touch base with other Heads of
international schools, discuss best practice, and
share ideas.
Wishing you a pleasant weekend.
With best regards,
Dr. Beverly Sortland
Head of School

PRIMARY NEWS
PYP Spanish
P8 have been working on the How We Express Ourselves Unit. Students focused on four Latin
American/Spanish Carnivals as people’s manifestations of happiness and gratitude. In groups, they
researched assigned carnivals and shared their findings with the rest of the class
Kimia presents her comparison between Irani Nowruz and Spanish Fallas.
Olivia and Ingrid make a Marimonda from
the Barranquilla Carnival in Colombia.
Elizabeth designs a Cabezudos poster
representing the big-headed characters
present in the Calle de San Sebastian
festivities in San Juan, Puerto Rico.
They also created posters depicting the most representative figures of each festivity and displayed
them in the classroom and Additional Language corridor. The unit finished with a presentation of a
comparison of the studied festivals and a similar celebration in each student’s home country.
In P7 we have also had special celebrations and singing has been a means we have used to
encourage the students to use their additional language. We have focused on specific topics such
as ‘Our School’ and read Spanish texts to practise comprehension. The students are regularly
assessed to ensure they are progressing with their learning.
In the P6 unit ‘How We Express Ourselves’ we explored songs and legends of Latin America.
Students researched the pre-columbian Nazca people from Perú and their famous Nazca lines. They
learned a Cuban nursery rhyme from the Caribbean and its origins.
P6 students sing Cuban nursery rhyme Duerme Negrito during assembly.

Nazca Legend (Perú)
P5 have had the opportunity to study the same story as in their main Unit of Inquiry: Juanito y las
Judias Magicas (Jack and the Beanstalk). They grew their own beans and learned all the vocabulary
related to the story. Their favourite word is la vaca and their favourite sound is the Spanish J in
Judias.

In P4 and P5 our focus remains building confidence with the language by learning vocabulary and
using it to build sentences in designated contexts. The students practice writing, but they also learn
through matching games and by using quizzes such as Kahoot and Quizlet. They never get tired of
these games and aways ask for more. Games are a very effective way of building a strong
vocabulary base and they help the students acquire accurate pronunciation which will remain with
them in their future study of the language.
