PROPERTIES AND ATTRACTIONS 2015

Hello and welcome to the 2015 edition of CPRE’s Members Guide to Attractions, Gardens, Houses and Museums.

Plumpton Rocks and White Scar Cave are amongst a number of brand new attractions for this year. Plumpton Rocks is a grade II listed garden extending to over 30 acres which Queen Mary described as ‘Heaven on Earth’. White Scar Cave is the longest show cave in Britain; see underground waterfalls and streams, thousands of stalactites and the massive Battlefield Cavern.

The attractions featured in the guide kindly offer discounts to our members at their own expense, so it is important we support them. If you do have any comments regarding your experience of any of the attractions, please do not hesitate to contact the Supporter Services team on 020 7981 2870 or send us an email at [email protected] – or even a little note about your visit.

I really hope that you make time to visit at least one this year. Don’t forget to take your membership card and this guide with you.

Thank you so much for being a member of CPRE. Without your support, CPRE would not have the strong voice it needs to campaign for a beautiful and living countryside.

Finally I would like to thank NFU Mutual for their continued support in the production of this guide thereby enabling us to promote these attractions to you, our members.

With warmest regards from all at CPRE.

Bill Sharkey Head of Supporter Services

The Plantation Garden is a grade II* English Heritage registered garden established in a medieval chalk quarry close to Norwich city centre, adjoining the Catholic Cathedral. During the mid-20th century the garden fell into disrepair and became completely neglected and overgrown. The Plantation Garden Preservation Trust, run by volunteers, was formed in 1980 to begin the restoration of the garden. The garden comprises nearly 3 acres in all, a haven of peace and tranquillity and a glimpse into a bygone age. The Lord Leycester Hospital is not now, and has never been a medical establishment. The word ‘hospital’ is used in its ancient sense meaning “a charitable institution for the housing and maintenance of the needy, infirm or aged”. The Hospital is an historic group of timber-framed buildings on Warwick High Street dating mainly from the late 14th Century clustered round the Norman gateway into the town with its 12th Century Chantry Chapel above it. In the reign of Queen Elizabeth I it became, under the patronage of Robert Dudley, Earl of Leicester, a place of retirement for old warriors. So it remains today as an independent charity providing homes for ex-Servicemen and their wives.

Our English countryside is disappearing fast. Green fields are gradually being destroyed to make way for retail parks, roads and other forms of development. Small towns and villages are being swallowed up as major cities expand and sprawl outwards. If this goes on, the simple pleasures of the countryside may not be here for future generations to enjoy.

To protect our countryside it is vital that CPRE is here to fight for it, not just today and tomorrow, but for years to come.

It is thanks to supporters like you that CPRE has made such a huge difference to our countryside. Since 1926 our campaigning has helped establish Green Belts, National Parks and the nation’s planning system, which ensures a clear distinction between town and country.

A gift in your Will to CPRE costs you nothing in your lifetime but many years from now it can help safeguard the future of what William Blake famously called our “green and pleasant land”. We rely on legacies to fund a third of everything we do and they are critical to our ability to stand up for the countryside.

Your gift could help us defend woods and meadows against housing or retail development, or help us promote legislation ensuring that development is directed towards previously used brownfield land instead of unspoilt countryside.

What more inspiring legacy could you leave for future generations?

HOW LONG WILL IT BE BEFORE ALL THIS IS LOST?

HELP US SAVE OUR COUNTRYSIDE FOR FUTURE GENERATIONS

To find out more about how to leave a gift to CPRE in your Will, or simply to talk more about aspects of our

work, please feel free to contact Alexandra McGill on 020 7981 2849 or email [email protected].

She will be very pleased to answer any questions you may have.
