ANNOUNCEMENTS (CONTINUED)
Rotary House
From Lynette Andersen Rotary Club of North Sacramento.
After almost a year and a half, brave little
Tyson has been in the fight of his life, and
he suffered through his chemo and
radiation treatments. Tyson was
diagnosed with brain cancer and has been
undergoing treatment at UC Davis
Children's Hospital.
Nine-year-old Tyson, his grandmother,
Renee, and his little brother, Daynon, age
five, have been our guests through an
overwhelming and life-changing ordeal.
Although Tyson's treatments are not quite
finished, Renee felt that Tyson's
appointments were so infrequent, it
wasn't fair to use the Rotary House when
another family has a more compelling
need. They vacated Rotary House on
Tuesday and returned to their home in
Quincy.
Rotary House is located at 4070 Second
Avenue, Sacramento.
From PP Joe Kaiser, a new tenant should
be moved in this week. Joe Kaiser, Jeff
Donlevy and Roland Wright helped
clean the house last weekend to get it
ready for the new tenant.

HIGHLIGHTS OF THIS
WEEK’S PROGRAM
Patty and I m oved to the Bay Area 89-
92 working for APL in Information
Technology.
We moved to Sacramento in 1992 to be with
family and start our own family.
Currently working in Healthcare IT and
enjoying life with my wife and two girls (San
Diego State, UC Merced).
Allen showed pictures and shared
stories from his Web Site:
“Stories and Pictures of Antarctica
1978 – 1986” at
www.acull.com
I was a member of the support staff in the US
Antarctic Research Program from 1978 to
1986.
My first job in Antarctica was the Winter
Over Chef at Palmer Station from 12/78 to
12/79.
I worked in McMurdo's USARP Cargo the
summers of 81/82 and 82/83.
I was the Logistics mgr. for South Pole
Station from 1983 to 86.
Palmer Station is the most beautiful place
I’ve seen on the earth. Palmer Station is more
then just the buildings and the point of land
that it’s built on. It’s a whole neighborhood.
The Glacer in the back yard, the bay on both
sides of the station.
IPP Patrick Magnani introduced our
speaker Allen Cull. Allen becam e
interested in Antarctica during Mrs. Whites
4th grade class here in Sacramento (1966).
After working as assistant Chef for the
Sacramento Inn and Red Lion, I was
selected as the Winter over Chef for Palmer
Station Antarctica (1978-79).
I returned to Antarctica (1981-1986) to work
in Logistics and Cargo Operations.
After eight years in the Antarctic program I
moved to Chicago (86-89). There, I married
my wonderful wife, Patricia in 1988 and
worked for APL, an international shipping
company.

When the Penguins were in town, they were
our constant friends. You could hear them
from the station (on the peninsula directly
behind me.) You could often smell them too!
Thay are truly the clowns of the ice.
My job may have been cook, but my interest became snowflake photography. I found a way to match my camera up with a microscope from the Bio lab to take this and other close up pictures of snowflakes. They say there are no two alike. What came first the penguin or the cormorant? These are the most beautiful birds. We spent a lot of time watching them.
Allen Cull and President Rich
Palmer Station is on the edge of a small island. The dominant feature of the island is Mount Williams. It watched over us. Allen then answ ered questions from the Rotarians and friends.
As is the usual custom, President Rich
presented Allen with a Rotary gift in
gratitude for his informative presentation.
Then, President Rich asked us to raise our
glasses and join him in a toast to Rotary
Around the World. The meeting was
adjourned.
