MAIN FEATURES OF THE 18 TH CENTURY NOVEL - Writing becomes a real job: novelists are not
protected by patrons anymore, they earn
money only by selling their books. Therefore,
they have to think about “marketable” stories
- Characters belong to middle classes
- Novels are written in a simple language
- Novels abandon the characteristics of
traditional literature like being based on history
and mythology
- Not mythology, but reality. Novels have to
entertain the raising classes and therefore plots
are realistic. That is why time and place are
always precisely set and the full name of the
main characters is reported
- The hero is usually the prototype of “the self-
made man”, representing all good qualities of
the men of his century.
- There can be two kinds of heroes: either the one
fighting for survival (who uses rationality in
order to survive) or the one succumbing to
passions (who is incapable to make rationality
prevail on passions) Robinson Crusoe = an
hero fighting for survival and using rationality
- The protagonist often reports the writer’s point
of view
- The novel often includes (direct and indirect)
experiences of the writer’s own life – WRITER
IS OMNIPRESENT
- The novel is often told in third person –
NARRATOR IS OMNISCIENT
Di
conseguenza, devono pensare a storie “vendibili”
storia e mitologia
- Non mitologia, ma realtà. I romanzi devono
scrittore
- Il romanzo spesso include esperienze (dirette e
indirette) della propria vita dello scrittore stesso –
SCRITTORE ONNIPRESENTE
- Il romanzo è spesso raccontato in terza persona –
NARRATORE ONNISCIENTE

ROBINSON CRUSOE – Plot - Robinson Kreutznaer – Crusoe in English – was born in York in 1632 to a German
father and an English mother. When he is 19 years old, he leaves his comfortable life
in order to travel around the world and make his fortune.
His first voyage is untroubled, to Guinea and back to England. On the contrary, his
second voyage is troubled because some pirates capture him. However, he escapes
and reaches Brazil on the Portuguese ship which has rescued him.
- In Brazil he buys a plantation and organises a voyage to Africa to get more slaves.
During this third voyage, he is shipwrecked on a desert island where he will remain
for 28 years. From this point of the story on, Robinson is alone and tries to reproduce
his homeland society. Moreover, he writes a diary to maintain an ideal contact with
“his world” made of cultured and religious people. In his diary, he talks both to himself
and to God.
- In the twelfth year, Robinson finds a human footprint and, later, some human remains
left by cannibals. Robinson decides to attack them and frees one of their victims. He
calls this savage Friday, after the day of his rescue. Robinson teaches him both
English and the Bible.
When other cannibals arrive on the island, Robinson and Friday attack them and free
two men, one of whom is Friday’s father. At the end of the novel, Robinson returns to
England and discovers that his plantation in Brazil has made him very rich.

umani lasciata dai cannibali.
