On countless rides home from busy tours in Brooklyn, while coming over the Verrazano, I would reflect on the mayhem of the fires and emergencies from that tour.

I would be amazed at the bravery and dedication and black humor of the Brothers. When things were at their worst, these guys were at their best. There were really remarkable acts of bravery that were common place and done with modesty. Where do we get these guys, I questioned a thousand times.

And the answer is always the same: they come from great families and great schools and have great friends!

That’s what makes them such special men and losing them such a disaster!

Thanks for remembering Joe in such a great way, and at the end of the day he would want us to celebrate who he was: a damn good NYC Fire Officer! The best!

MICHAEL MEAGHER Retired FDNY Captain

I had not seen Joseph Gullickson in years. When we knew him, he was Joby — a young neighbor who came over to mow our lawn and chat or sit on the front step to say hello. He taught me how to drape the electrical cord for the mower over my back so it wouldn’t be run over while making its way through the tidy little lawns we had in the front and back yards. He was a happy kid. He was a polite and relaxed kid. Our family was glad to know him and knew he would grow up to be a good person and make his contribution to a com-munity. Decades later, after 9/11, I read some remarks about how he went inside a tower and never came out. I read about how much he loved coming home from work to his family. I remembered the good-natured boy with a wonder-ful smile who took his time when he came by to mow our lawn, occasionally stopping for a chat on the front step with a cool drink on a hot summer day.

SCHOLARSHIPS GRANTEDThe Maverick Foundation has awarded approximately $395,000 in total scholarships. Annual scholarship awards started at $2,500 the first year with one recipient, and grew steadily to nearly $56,000 in annual awards by 2018 with a total of 50 recipients. We currently offer five scholarships annually with each having a maximum value of $7,000.

CONGRESSIONAL AWARDS EARNEDAll of our youth participants’ hard work has not gone unrecognized. They participate in the Congres-sional Award program, offered by the U.S. Congress, in which young people set their own goals and earn medals for realizing them.

So far, our rising stars have been awarded 18 gold medals, 25 silver medals, and 30 bronze medals through the Congressional Award Foundation. Each medal level involves setting and achieving goals in four major areas: public service, personal development, physical activity, and exploration.

COMMUNITY SERVICE COMMITMENTSJust as we have grown our scholarship program, our youth participants—including a few who are not scholarship recipients—have increased their community

THE MAVERICK FOUNDATION CONGRATULATES THE FOLLOWING MEDAL EARNERS ON THEIR ACCOMPLISHMENTS:

Please visit our recently updated website at www.themavierickfoundation.com to learn more about the foundation and our mission or to make a donation.

Since its inception in 2002, the Maverick Foundation has positively impacted the community through providing educational scholarships to young people who commit to volunteer work with various local organizations. Their public service work is tied in with the Congressional Award program, which recognizes them for setting and achieving goals. These three major components come together to define the essence of what we do:

OUR IMPACT

impact through volunteer hours completed. In a single year, our volunteers collectively give up to approximately 1,000 hours of their time to support local organizations. So far they have logged 10,090 hours in community service work, and this number continues to rise.

Our program strengthens coop-eration in the community as well, as our scholarship recipients have worked with a diverse array of community groups and agencies over the years. Organizations our scholarship recipients have volun-teered with include:

Our flagship annual scholarship to Moore Catholic High School was established to honor the memory of Joe Gullickson, who made the ultimate sacrifice as a lieutenant with the FDNY on September 11, 2001 at the WTC and Dan McGuire, who tragically lost his life in automobile accident in 1976 at the age of 17.

THE GULLICKSON MCGUIRE SCHOLARSHIP

Joe possessed a genuine concern for others and would do anything for anyone anytime. “No” was not in his vocabulary. FDNY Captain Tom Giordano said in his eulogy, “Joe was an exceptional officer, always learning, always teaching, and, above all, always looking out for his men. I am proud to call Joe a brother, a hero, and a friend.”

Dan was a natural leader and co-captain of Moore Catholic’s track team. He always gave 110% and was a true friend. Track Coach Bill Hodge said, “If ever I was to have a son, Danny is like what I want my son to be. He had so many good attributes – he was a tough, fine athlete, and combined that with sensitivity towards his fellow human beings.” Dan’s favorite motto was, “To the Max.”

My BrotherAs a gift from God, You came to us on Saint Joseph’s Day And were so named in his honor.

Our time together was brief, the years too few So much you gave of yourself Always with a welcome smile and a helping hand.

On 9/11 with the Ladder 101 Red Hook Raiders To the Towers you courageously raced Knowing the danger, unknowing your fate, That was the ultimate sacrifice you were to make.

Now you are my eternal hero Forever you are my loving brother Always remembered with admiration and appreciation. So, you continue to do great things here on ear th While smiling down upon us from heaven.

For anyone who knew John Thomann, we would all agree that he was taken from all of us far too soon. His battle with melanoma was valiant and served as an inspiration. There are many adjectives that can be used to describe him.

n COMMITTED, no one worked harder than John from his high school job pumping gas to his last days at Turner. Coming to work every day, regardless of the effort that it took. He under-stood that people were counting on him and he refused to let them down.

n INTERESTED, John took a genuine interest in everyone that he met and anything that might be their passion. John would ask countless questions trying to understand the person through their interests.

n PASSIONATE, John had many interests of his own and he was passionate about them. He enjoyed muscle cars, in particular, his ‘66 GTO. He enjoyed Long Island, Mattituck, boating and fishing were also among John’s interests. He loved and respected the military, in particular, vintage military aircraft. He shared his enthu-siasm with others, encouraging many to join in. Many Turner staffers spent Memorial Day sitting on a cold and wet Jones Beach to watch the annual airshow that John loved so much.

n OPTIMISTIC, The Mets, the Jets, the Islanders...nothing else needs to be said.

Most of all John Thomann LOVED. He loved his family. Kathleen, Jacqueline and James were un-doubtedly the center of his world. His brothers and sisters and other family members were all in John’s world as well. He cherished his 30 year friendships with his classmates from Maria Regina HS. He loved the NY construction industry, his colleagues at Turner, especially “the boys and girls of Turner Interiors" as he would often say. He loved the owners, especially the difficult ones, the architects and designers, the subcontractors, and vendors, but most of all John loved the challenges that we all face every day.

The son of an NYPD ESU Sargent with 37 years on the job and the brother of an FDNY firefighter assigned to Vinegar Hill Ladder 23 in Manhattan, John highly regarded and admired the dedication and bravery of our first responders especially the NYPD and FDNY. He faithfully made time from his busy schedule each and every year to remember 9/11. John always asked what he could do for the Maverick Foundation and was one of our strongest supporters behind the scenes...just the way he liked it.

The Maverick Foundation is honored and proud to present these scholarships in memory of John who truly was a unique individual and lived each day with a smile and kind word.

JOHN THOMANN

In November of 2010, the track and field community lost a shining light with the sudden passing of Coach Bill Hodge. He died doing what he loved to do for over four decades . . . inspiring and coaching

runners to achieve their full potential in running and in life. Bill began his lifelong dedication to track and field as a runner at Monsignor Farrell High School and Staten Island Community College. Bill began his coaching career at Moore Catholic High School where he jump started a lackluster program through his enthusiasm, dedication, and great personality. Bill knew instinctively when a proverbial kick in the pants was needed or words of encouragement or a joke to break up the tension with his quick humor. His runners always gave 110% because they knew he was there with them . . . heart and soul. When the Moore Catholic team tragically lost their Co-Captain and leader, Dan McGuire, Bill handled the traumatic loss with such class and reverence. He kept the team together and used Dan’s favorite phrase as our motto, “To the Max!”

Coach Bill HodgeHe Lived “To the Max”

Bill progressed through numerous college coaching assignments including Wagner College, Robert Morris University, Lafayette, Columbia University, Bucknell University, Rider University, and, most recently, Belmont Abbey College. During his career, Bill was honored as “Coach of the Year” in four different NCAA Division I conferences.

A four year runner at Moore Catholic, John Cizin, says of Bill, “He taught me so much more about life than just running. He taught me about hard work, teamwork, and dedication.” Bill’s accomplishments will be there for the record books in the annals of track and field for the ages but his true and most important impact on the world was the intangible positive influence he had on the so many young people he coached in life without even knowing it. He wrote in my high school yearbook, “Keep Plugging!” This is so typical for Bill with his infectious positive attitude.

The Maverick Foundation is honored and proud to present the annual Bill Hodge Memorial Scholarship to a special young adult who embraces the character and values of Bill, is determined to reach his or her full potential in all areas, possesses the desire to help others, and leads by example.

TERRY SWEENEY He Lived Strong

There are special people in the world who inspire and amaze us with their spirit for life and ability to rise above adversity and insurmountable odds with grace and courage. Terry Sweeney was one of these people.

Despite being afflicted with a rare degenerative neurological disease at a young age that gradually denied him of his motor skills until it ultimately took his life, Terry had a radiant smile and a magnetic personality that defied his condition. He stayed involved with his passion for sports especially his beloved Saint Peter’s Eagles with its hallowed basketball heritage. Although confined to a wheelchair for his entire adult life, it did not prevent him from attending activities and events that had to have been difficult for him but you could never tell.

Even in his last days when Terry could not speak or eat and the disease was really taking its toll, you could tell how happy he was to see you. His sense of humor was infamous not only to make a joke at your expense but his ability to even laugh at himself.

You could really tell how special he was by how many true friends he had. To know him was to love him and anyone who came to know him was a better person. Terry “lived strong” long before the phrase was coined on a yellow rubber wristband. He never had the opportunity to pursue a career or get married and have a family but he never complained and always made the most of what he did have.

Terry led by example without even knowing it.

The Maverick Foundation is honored and proud to present the annual Terry Sweeney Memorial Scholarship to a special young adult who embraces the character and values of Terry, is determined to reach his or her full potential in all areas, possesses the desire to help others, and leads by example.

James (Jim) Boylan was a man ded-icated to the service of our great city and country who served in the army during the Korean War and had a 27 year career with the FDNY. Jim was also a longtime member of the Knights of Columbus. Jim was also struck by tragedy three times

in his life with the loss of two beloved wives and his daughter Laura. Yet through it all, Jim carried this heavy burden with humility and would not weigh you down with his loss. He was a genuine friend and a kind man who was sincerely interested in your life and did not hesitate to help you if he could in any way. Jim’s childhood friend, Father Phillip Blaine, said during his eulogy, “Jim was always a good guy

JIM BOYLAN

and I do not mean that in a superficial way.” Anyone who met Jim just once came away with that same impression. He loved to share a laugh with you and always had a smile on his face when he met you. Jim’s well-rounded life made him an avid golfer and tennis player as well as a big fan of country music. Jim was also a graduate of Wagner College with a degree in business. Jim was a dedicated and stal-wart supporter of The Maverick Foundation and a lifelong friend of The Gullickson Family.

The Maverick Foundation is honored and proud to offer an annual scholarship in memory of Jim Boylan to the son or daughter of a New York City firefighter who is an eighth grader and will be attending a Catholic high School on Staten Island.

REMEMBERING JOE ....“MACKEY BOY”

When I went to college I used to stop by the Gullickson’s to meet Bob for class. I could always count on Mr. “G” to needle, make that tear me up, upon entering and exiting. “Mackey Boy” he would say and I knew I was in trouble. As Joe got older and came into his own, he developed that same biting skill. But he sharpened it even more.

Joe and I had so many conversations. They always lead to the same place … basketball and his prowess. He was very confident, despite the fact that his lifetime statistics (points, rebounds, and blocks) could only sur-pass Dennis McNamara. Joe would go on and on how he boxed me out, “Putting a little wood on ya, moving you out of the paint.” No one, I mean nobody, remembers the play. Anyway, frustrated, I’d finally tell him I had enough and would not continue the fight. He would put his arm around me, shake his head, and tell me, “I knew this bull when it use to rage.” He got me again!

Giving up, I’d walk off and it would al-ways end the same way.

“Mackey Boy, I love ya!”

And he would be laughing. Always laughing.

Stephen McNamaraNovember 2001

“Never Dig the Hole First”

Joe had a knack for engaging people in conversa-tions and one of those was a handyman painter named Ralph who worked full time for the Post Office during the day and did odd job painting as well. We called him “Ralph the Painter” and he was a World War II veteran who had seen a lot of action in Northern Africa. Ralph grew up in the Midwest on a farm during the 1930’s under tough conditions and was required to grow up quickly and handle a lot of chores on the farm helping his father. Joe loved talking with him and admired his World War II service. I think Joe had him do things just so he could meet and talk with him. Anyway, Joe was a big dog lover and had a Rott-weiler named “Lucy” whose mother has my fa-ther’s dog. One day, “Ralph the Painter” picking up on my Joe’s love of dogs shared the following:

When I was a young boy, maybe 12 or 13, I was eating dinner with my family when my father no-ticed my dog that was getting up there in years was having a terrible time getting around. It had been going on for some time but this time my father turned to me and said, “Ralph, it is time.” He went on to explain to me that since it was my dog I would have to put it down using the shot-gun I had been trained to use for hunting and that he wanted me to do this after dinner. Well, I was smart enough not to disobey my father, so I took my dog out to the field with a shovel and, of course, the shotgun after dinner. My dog limped along as well. I could not bring myself to shoot the dog so I decided to dig the hole first where I would bury the dog with him watching me intently the entire time. As I stepped out of the hole and motioned towards the shotgun wouldn’t you know that the dog took off like a bat out-of-hell never to be seen again.

Ralph concluded jokingly, the moral of the story is, “Never dig the hole first.”

I fondly recall this story since Joe and I had many laughs over it.

FDNY Lt. Joseph Gullickson of Ladder 101 sacrificed his life while saving the lives of others on September 11, 2001 at the WTC. Joseph was a firefighter for fourteen years and was well respected among his fellow firefighters. Captain Tom Giordano said, “Joe was an exceptional officer, always learning, always teaching, and, above all, always looking out for his men. This was a man dedicated to his job and totally devoted to his family. I am proud to call Joe a brother, a hero, a friend.”

The Maverick Foundation is a privately run and managed non-profit organization that was established in 2002 to empower well-rounded graduating 8th graders who lead by example, possess the determination to reach their full potential, and have the desire to help others. We currently offer four scholarships that require recipients to enroll in the Congressional Award Program and achieve their prestigious Gold Medal before graduating from high school. This requires 400 hours of volunteer work, 200 hours of personal development, 200 hours of

physical activity, and numerous expedition/exploration trips. We offer the “Gullickson McGuire Scholarship” to Moore Catholic HS, the “Terry Sweeny Scholarship” to Saint Peter’s HS, the “Bill Hodge Scholarship” for an 8th grader committed to a track and field career in a Catholic HS on Staten Island, and the “Jim Boylan Scholarship” to the 8th grade son or daughter of a NYC firefighter attending a Catholic HS on Staten Island.
