Pastor’s Pen

A promise. What does that mean exactly? As we conclude our Sunday School Year, as some

of our members graduate, what is a promise? From and for each other? From God for the sake

of our relationships?

As our children conclude a year learning about the promises of God in the stories of Jonah, and

Abraham and Moses and others…I wonder, what do our children think about promises?

Is a promise a mulligan on the golf tee when you get a do-over after messing up? Is it a time

machine that allows you to go back to right the wrongs? Is it the fairytale ending as your favor-

ite television show concludes for another season? Is it a magic wand that fixes things with a

flick of a wrist?

Well hopefully our children see that a promise from God comes through God’s Word. That very

Word that they have been hearing stories from weekly. That God that has been faithful through

the many, many centuries of human life. A promise that when the Word was made flesh

through Christ, that we would cling to the reality of promises given by God.

The promise that even though there are a variety of different types of people in the Bible, a vari-

ety of different experiences, there is only one God. And that one God makes the same promis-

es. One of them being in the end of our Easter season that we should trust that in the midst of

death there will be life. And that within that huge promise lies another. The promise that car-

ries with it the image of the Good Shepherd, of the spotless lamb, of the man opening his arms

to little children…the promise of steadfast love.

For God’s promise cries out in desperation, abandonment and death, to meet us in our horrible

places we are sometimes forced to go. So that our children hear of a promise in whatever story

has stuck with them this year. That God is not afraid to go any place they may go, no matter

how horrible it might be, and that God is going to join our kids in their stories. Bringing life out of

death through love. And all of us should trust that a promise made by God is a promise that

never broken.

A promise that we can’t keep but God can. Thanks be to God who has never broken a prom-

ise.

Our Lord has written the promise of resurrection, not in books alone, but in every

leaf in springtime. Martin Luther

ENDOWMENT FUND NEWS

There are many different ways for a donor to contribute to a congregational endowment fund. Each type of charitable gift

is unique in what it does, the tax advantage it offers, and the most appropriate time to use it. We have already

discussed Direct Gifts, Bequest Gifts, Qualified Asset Beneficiary Designation, Charitable Life Insurance, Char-itable Gift Annuity, and Charitable Remainder Annuity Trust (CRAT).

This month we are going to discuss Charitable Remainder Unitrust (CRUT)

Charitable Remainder Unitrust (CRUT)

Donors give through a CRUT by transferring cash or a capital asset, including real estate, to a charitable remain-

der unitrust. This is an irrevocable gift. The trust then pays the donor or someone the donor designates a fluctu-ating income, based on a percentage of the trust's value, for life or a specified term. Unlike a CRAT, donors can

make additional contributions to CRUT. At the end of the term, the principal remaining in the trust is passed on

to the endowment fund.

A CRUT is most appropriate for donors aged 50 and older who can contribute at least $100,000 over the life of the trust in cash or capital assets. The tax benefits include income tax deductions, capital gains tax avoidance,

gift tax deductions, and estate tax deductions.
