It’s winter in Wyoming and the gentle breezes blow 70 miles per hour at 52 below! Oh, how I love Wyoming when the snow’s up to your butt; you take a breath of winter air and your nose is frozen shut. Yes, the weather here is wonderful. You may think I’m a fool. I could never leave Wyoming, “cause I’m frozen to the stool!”

SodiumWhat does Sodium do??

It helps keep a proper balance of water in our body. It also

helps regulate blood pressure and transmits nerve signals.

However, too much sodium can raise blood pressure . High

blood pressure or Hypertension is a major risk factor for heart

disease, stroke, and kidney disease.

How much sodium do you need?Healthy adults only need 500

milligrams or 1/4 tsp. of salt each day. Healthy people that do not

have high blood pressure should limit salt to

2,300 mg per day, which is much less than most Americans

consume.

I’m beginning to understand why so many retired Wyoming residents become “snow birds” and head south for the winter. One reason is that winter and aging don’t exactly mix. For some time, we have known anecdotally that seniors feel those cold weather chills more severly than they did when they were younger. Now we are finding there is some truths to those anecodotes. Coping with cold weather puts more exertion on our bodies than we realize, and those efforts can be even harder for seniors. The American Heart Association warns against sudden exertion outside in cold weather for anyone not conditioned to it, and especially for seniors. Cold weather puts more stress on our hearts, and sudden exertion can strain our hearts. Winter also is cold, pneumonia and flu season, and seniors tend to be more at risk for those conditions. Winter weather, meanwhile puts all of us at increased risk of injury and death unless we take precautions. Exposure, hypothermia and frostbite are conditions of the season, driving can be riskier, and even skills like walking can be tested.

Hypothermia is the rapid lowering of our core body temperature. And once again, seniors - along with small children and those with heart disease - are more susceptible. The best defense against hypothermia is to prevent it in the first place, by dressing warmly and appropriately for cold and severe conditions and to come in from the cold if we start experiencing symptoms. Snow and ice are dangers to everyone. Icy roads contribute to crashes and highway injuries. Icy walkways and steps are a leading cause of falls, and thin ice on our lakes and streams can be a major danger to ice anglers and other winter sports enthusiasts. We cannot do much to prevent ice from forming in Wyoming during winter - but we can take some precautions. Anticipating ice and preparing for it is important, whether we are driving or walking. Rubber-soled boots with good grips are indispensable for walking. We also can take shorter steps and keep our weight over our feet and watch for ice on steps. Seniors need to be especially careful, because bones become more brittle as we age and seniors are more likely to suffer serious injuries in a fall. Driving through Wyoming’s wide-open spaces can be fun, unless we break down in the middle of nowhere. That is why everyone needs emergency survival gear in his or her vehicles. The most important survival recommendation is to stay with our vehicle if we break down. It is the safest shelter we can find - and easiest for searchers to find. And one final tip: alcohol and cold weather do not mix nearly as well as people think. Alcohol actually draws heat away from our vital organs.

A married couple had been out shopping for most of the day. Suddenly the wife realized that her husband had “disappeared”. Somewhat irate she called her husband’s mobile and demanded, “Where are you?” Husband: “Darling, do you remember that little jewelry shop where you saw that beautiful diamond necklace and totally fell in love with it but I didn’t have the money at that time and I said “Darling it’ll be yours one day.” Wife, tremulously, “Yes, I do remember that my love.” Husband, “Well I’m in the Pub next to that shop.”
