A day to be grateful for all the good in our lives.

Thanksgiving

In the 1600’s, in Europe there were many wars and religious protests. Some of these

protests created religions we now call Protestant. The original Christian religion

persecuted these Protestants. Teresa Reen Nov. 2009 East Side Adult Ed

ThanksgivingMany of these people decided to move to

other countries. Some of these peopledecided to come to the new land called

America. These people were called Pilgrims.These people had the 1st Thanksgiving.


ThanksgivingPilgrim – a religious traveler. Anyone who

travels for religious worship or freedom. The European Pilgrims looked like this.


ThanksgivingSome of these Pilgrims were also called

Puritans.


Thanksgiving

These Pilgrims were called Puritans because they were very strict in their

religious belief and practice. They often had arguments with the other

people on the ship about the rules and laws in the new land.


ThanksgivingBecause of these arguments, before they landed,

they reached an agreement about these rules and

laws of living here. The agreement is called the

Mayflower Compact.

It is the first set

of laws made

in this country.


ThanksgivingThe Europeans came to this land in 1620.

They arrived in ships like these.


ThanksgivingThe journey on the ocean was rough and

dangerous. They arrived late in the year.

They didn’t have time to

build shelters or plant crops.


ThanksgivingThe native people helped them by giving them food and showed them

which animals to hunt.


ThanksgivingThe Europeans called the native people

Indians because they thought they were in India. They didn’t realize that

they were in a new land called America.

ThanksgivingThe Indians saved the lives of these

Europeans. They showed them how to

build shelters and to gather food from the

land. The Europeans were very grateful.


Thanksgiving

During the second year they harvested a lotof food. They decided to invite the Indians toa feast. They called the feast a ‘Thanksgiving’

ThanksgivingThe celebration lasted for 3 days.

This first Thanksgiving had 90 male Pilgrims

participating with the Chief of the Indians,

Massassoit and 2 of his leaders, Squanto and

Samoset. Women served but did not participate.

ThanksgivingDuring his first year as president, George

Washington declared Nov. 26th as a

national day of thanksgiving and prayer.

In the 1860’s Sarah Hale urged President

Lincoln to create a National Holiday of

Thanksgiving.

Thanksgiving a national holiday.
