Transcript of THANKS TO YOU - newseum.org · Harvey Berlin and Ellen Feldman Sheryl Bills Heckler Louis and Joan...
Those two words resonate today more than ever.
Whether it is the Charlie Hebdo murders, the beheading of journalists or the more subtle suppression of free speech, our fundamental freedoms are under attack around the world.
Since 2008, we’ve welcomed more than 6 million visitors to our award-winning museum on Pennsylvania Avenue, to educate them about the fundamental value of a free and fair press and the five freedoms of the First Amendment. And we have educated millions more through our digital platforms.
The Newseum owes its success to loyal friends and donors like you. Your support enables us to carry out this noble mission today, while we prepare to seize the opportunities of tomorrow.
In the past year an unfettered free press and the right to free expression were challenged – and occasionally celebrated – in ways our Founding Fathers would never have imagined. Thanks to you, the Newseum was there to fight for those freedoms. And thanks to you, our presence and impact will grow ever stronger.

THANKS TO YOU, THE NEWSEUM WAS THERE ...
... to champion the First Amendment when the nation learned that some journalists were prohibited from taking photographs of events unfolding in Ferguson, Mo.
... to remind the world of the threats to journalists when terrorists beheaded
reporters in Syria for attempting to report
the truth.
... to give teachers educational resources to connect the civil rights movement to the 2014 protest marches in Missouri and New York.
... to pay tribute when terrorists gunned down
12 and injured 11 at the offices of French satirical newspaper
Charlie Hebdo.
... to sound the alarm when global press freedom reached a decade low.

THANKS TO YOU, OUR EXPERTS ARE THERE TO CHAMPION FREE EXPRESSION.
“After more than 50 years of Supreme Court decisions defining the
constitutional role of religion in schools, educators – rural and urban – should
know better.”
“Champions of a free and independent press should demand that journalists do a better job each day of keeping an
eye on government.”
“In every conceivable way, Rolling Stone flunked the basic tenets of Journalism 101.”
“The fervor on both sides of the contraception debate suggests that regardless of who wins, the U.S. Supreme Court rulings will likely cause a prolonged engagement in religion and public life.”
