NEWS … NEWS … NEWS … NEWS … NEWS … NEWS … NEWS … NEWS … NEWS … NEWS … NEWS … Kofukan supporter Mottox Inc. makes a success of

introducing fine wines to a Japanese audience

Around this time, Mr. Okada, a good friend of

Shihan Tomiyama from

the same high school, met

Mr. Hiraoka by chance on

the street in Osaka for the

first time in many years

and re-established con-

tact. Soon after that, Mr.

Hiraoka visited London

as a part of his European

wine buying trip and Shi-han Tomiyama went to

London to meet him. As

they were good friends at

high school but had lost

contact since graduation,

their friendship was re-

established quickly.

Shihan Tomiyama visited the company during the following visit to Japan and met Mr. Teranishi,

who was also a good friend during high school days. Mr. Teranishi quickly contacted his busi-ness friends and established the “Kofukan International Supporters’ Association”, which donates

a considerable amount of money to Kofukan International every year so that Shihan Tomiyama

can visit member countries that are less prosperous.

As you can see from our periodical newsletters, the Japanese company Mottox has been our

main supporter for many years. This is because the two top people of the company, Mr.

Taichi Teranishi and Mr. Atsushi Hiraoka, are high school classmates of Shihan Tomiyama.

Those who have participated in our Japan Trips over the years have

met them, as they have organized a party to welcome each group that

has visited Japan. What is more, they have done this free of charge to

the appreciative participants, holding the parties at one of their own

restaurants.

The company was established in 1915 in Osaka as a retailer of alco-

holic drinks and foods. Named “Motonashi-ya”, it was the family business of Mr. Teranishi. After World War Two, they changed the

business to wholesaler of alcoholic drinks – mainly beer and sake.

In the late 1970s, Mr. Teranishi took over the running of the family

business and recruited Mr. Hiraoka, his high school classmate. They

went to the same university too – Kansei Gakuin University – where

they had consolidated their friendship and respect of each other.

Together, they started the modernization of the business.

In the 1980s, a price war of Japanese branded alcoholic drinks started among large retailers and the wholesale

business faced a crisis. This prompted the

company to start handling imported

wines. Although large retailers had many employees, none of them

had a good knowledge of wines. So Mottox created a new concept of

“whole support” to assist in the sales process. They designed the

shelves, selected the range of wines, supplied point-of-purchase dis-

plays and price cards so that retailers could sell wines without having

extensive knowledge.

In 1992, in order to reflect the new modern nature of their business,

they changed the name of the company to “Mottox” from the old

fashioned “Motonashi-ya”. They started to import wines themselves

in 1996. Happily, a boom in the popularity of red wines took hold in

Japan and they almost doubled their sales. They opened their Tokyo

office in 1998 and started targeting restaurants and bars on top of

their established retail buyers. This concerted effort bore fruit, as

their sales doubled between 1998 and 2008.

Adding to the range

When the financial crisis of 2008

hit the sales of established and ex-

pensive wines such as Bordeaux,

the company started looking in to

New World wines. With the con-

cept of “Value & Quality”, they

have sourced good wines at rea-

sonable prices, while rejecting any

cheap wines. Their sales grew

consistently and were

JP¥ 10,850,000,000 in 2016!

Aiming to enrich the food culture of Japan

The food culture of Japan is constantly progressing and Mottox aims to

follow and to contribute to this trend. To this end, they continue to seek

new wines and to promote new combinations between food and wine.

They wish to contribute to the food culture of Japan by supplying wine

and sake, not to become intoxicated but to enrich the food table. They

organize wine tasting events for restaurateurs and food professionals

every year, twice in Tokyo and Osaka, once or twice in other cities

such as Kobe, Kyoto, Nagoya, Fukuoka, Sapporo, etc., which bring in

more than 10,000 people in total.

They also organize wine tasting events open to general consumers in

Tokyo and Osaka. Since 2012 they have been organizing a “Sparkling

wine festival” in 5 areas of Japan. The biggest one is “Tokyo Spar-

kling Fes” which involves around 400 restaurants and bars with the top

prize of return air tickets to Hawaii.

The company is constantly innovating. In 2010, they released a smart

phone app called “Wine-Link”. When a customer scans the Mottox

logo on a bottle with a smart phone, information about the wine can be

read. At the time of writing, about 110,000 apps have been

downloaded.

Currently, Mr. Teranishi is the Chairman of the company and Mr.

Hiraoka is the Managing Director. They employ 168 people. Shihan

Tomiyama is very happy to see Mottox prospering through their hard

work and very proud and grateful for their continuing support. I am

sure we all echo that sentiment, and wish them continued good fortune.

Shihan Tomiyama’s visit to Bulawayo, Zimbabwe

Following his usual pattern, Shihan Tomiyama visited Zimbabwe from 28th July to 3rd August. But the difference this year was that he visited Bulawayo, the second largest city, instead of Harare, the capital. He used to visit both Harare and Bulawayo many years ago but stopped visiting Bulawayo quite a long time ago. He remembers that the last time he visited Bulawayo was in the middle of an economic crisis in Zimbabwe with inflation of 2,000 per cent per year and that his flight from Harare to Bulawayo cost Zim$1,000,000! Times have changed since then and Zimbabwe is using the US dollar as its currency now.

He flew direct from Johannesburg to Bulawayo on the 28th of July. Navigating immigration was much easier than Harare airport as the number of passengers was much smaller than at the capital city. His accommodation was a very nice bed & breakfast (guest house) in the suburbs. And, very importantly, there was a good Chinese restaurant in town. Training took place at the Raylton Sports Club, which is owned by National Railways of Zimbabwe (NRZ). The Kofukan club in Bulawayo has a good

number of young members with good potential. Also several instructors and members from Harare travelled to Bulawayo. There were basically three classes every day, one for lower grades, one for intermediate grades and one for black belts. Shihan Tomiyama had been teaching one new kata every year over twenty years of visits, but the leaders of Kofukan Zimbabwe decided a few years ago that they should consolidate the katas they had learned instead of learning new katas. They trained Nipapo, Suparinpai, Useishi, Kosokun-Sho, Tomari-Bassai, Shushi-no-Kon and Sakugawa-no-Kon. On Monday the 31st of July, one training session took place at St. Thomas School, a Catholic school. Sensei Mazibuko, chief instructor for Zimbabwe, teaches at the school with good support from the headmaster, who once was his teacher. On Wednesday, they visited Khami, a ruined city that was once the capital of the Kingdom of Butua, which is one of 5 UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Zimbabwe. It is a complex of stone-walled sites on the west bank of the Khami River.

Shihan Tomiyama flew out of Bulawayo in the early morning of Thursday 3rd August back to Johannesburg, from where he made a tour of locations in South Africa. He is looking forward to his next visit to Zimbabwe.

The first reunion of Japanese instructors of the Shukokai World Karate Union Europe took place in Ise, Japan on 27 & 28 June, 2017. Shihan Omi could not attend due to other commitments in France. Shihan Yasuhiro Suzuki, the origi-nal chief instructor of SWKUE, Sensei Hanai, Sensei Ikazaki, Mrs. Kitaoka (Miss Ishimaru), Mr. Hayashi and Shihan Tomiyama were the members who gathered at Ise-Shima Royal Hotel. To remind younger members, the Kofukan organization was previously known as the Shukokai World Karate Union Europe. SWKUE used to have ten Japa-nese instructors based in Europe. Under the leadership of Shihan Yasuhiro Su-zuki, all of them were based in France at the beginning. Then Senseis Hanai and Ikazaki, as well as Mr. Hayashi and Miss Ishimaru, returned to Japan. Sen-seis Shimabukuro, Kamohara and Kawanishi went their separate ways. Shihan Tomiyama moved to Belgium, then to England. You can read more about the early history on the Kofukan website.

Now Kofukan Inter-national, which is SWKUE under its new name of Kofu-kan, (which was the name of Shihan Su-zuki's dojo in Japan) has three Japanese instructors namely Shihans Omi and Okubo in France and Shihan Tomiyama in England.

Doshisha News … Doshisha student becomes Japanese University Kata Champion. On Saturday July 1, Shihan Tomiyama visited Doshisha University for some filming. The karate club students were training, and Ms.Hikaru Ohno (pictured right with Shihan Tomiyama), French Open Female Kata Champion and graduate of the karate club was at the dojo advising the students. The next day, the All-Japan University Individual Championship took place: Hashiru Nishiyama won the Male Kata and Natsuki Shimizu won second place in the Female Kata. .On the weekend of 2nd & 3rd September, the Kansai Open University Individual Championship was held. Dosh-isha students won all four Kata categories (Male Dan / Hashiru Nishiyama, Female Dan / Yuri Sumitomo, Male Kyu / Jun'ya Funakubo, Female Kyu / Satsuki Shimizu (not Natsuki Shimizu as above). In Kumite, Kanako Odate won silver in Female Excellent class (elites), Nana Takagi won Female Dan and Yuri Sumitomo was runner-up in Female Dan. Great results for the University.

KOFUKAN JAPANESE INSTRUCTORS’ REUNION

It was the first reunion after so many years, some of them meeting for the first time in 40 years or so. They had a good time talking about their memo-ries as well as telling their life stories.

They parted with the promise of holding this meeting regularly, hoping there will be more of them next time.
