42.5388% of My Life or The Last 25 Years

On 28 June 2014, TEG Architects will celebrate its 25 Year Anniversary. On that date, that will represent over 42% of my life that I’ve been part of this creative, innovative and incredibly talented firm.

The people that comprise TEG Architects are the most talented I’ve ever worked with; they are dedicated to Service, Quality and Creativity. They help every client in creating their worlds; they help each other in helping our clients. The only thing that has changed over these 25 fantastic years is that, our creative solutions keep getting better.

In the past 25 years, our firm has been the springboard for many of our clients. Some relatively minor health systems have grown to be regional providers of highly sophisticated life-saving care.

Communities we have served as planners and architects have used our innovative and dynamic facilities for education, wellness and athletics to revitalize downtown business districts, to serve thousands of citizens striving for healthy lives and to educate our future leaders.

Countries have used our health planning guidelines to shape the delivery of health care in former Soviet nations and in Central America.

Countless lives have entered this world in the innovative hospitals we have planned and designed.

Countless families have spent their last moments with loved ones in facilities that our team has created.

Thousands of babies have survived and grown to be adults from neonatal intensive care units we have designed.

TEG has helped train hundreds of professional staff members; some have moved on to form their own firms, others are literally all over the world planning, designing and creating the built environment.

TEG has employed over 120 interns in our 25 years. These young people have helped us forget we are getting older, while learning how to be lifelong learners of a wonderful profession.

The last 25 years or 42.5388% of my life has been so incredibly exciting and full of every emotion possible. The one thought that remains is, we have so much more to do; the next 25 years will be incredible.

Thanks to all of our clients, staff, their families and our friends around the world who have made the first 25 years so memorable.

All My Best Regards.Wayne….

May is an exciting time for Park Place Surgical Hospital. Construction is quickly coming to a close on the new four story, 110,000 sf facility at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital Campus. This facility will truly be an asset for Park Place Surgical Hospital and the people of South Central Louisiana.

TEG worked with the Lemoine Co. in a design/build relationship. The entire design, owner & contractor team collaborated early in design to create a motto and mission statement specific to this project to clearly define objectives early.

The new surgical hospital includes a 10-room operating suite, a pre-operative suite (with individual walled cubicles), and a post-operative suite featuring PACU and Phase II recovery. Pre-admission testing, central sterile, a pain procedure treatment suite with pre- and post-procedure recovery space, a 10-bed inpatient unit, a 5-bed observation unit, and administration and office space are all also contained within the building.

The fourth floor is leased and houses an 18-bed LTAC unit and 25-exam room medical office space. The building ties directly to the Our Lady of Lourdes Regional Medical Center second floor via elevated pedestrian way. This connectivity enhances convenience and efficiency by allowing travel between Our Lady of Lourdes and the Surgical Hospital.

Utilizing a multi-package delivery saved Park Place Surgical Hospital time during construction. The TEG team expedited a site and foundation package to be under construction while the remainder of the construction documents were still underway. Having the contractor mobilized and long lead items procured early, compressed the schedule, compared to a normal design-bid-build process.

This project has been a success due to TEG's ability to respond quickly to a demanding occupancy schedule. With this new facility, the physicians & staff can provide access to better and more readily-available healthcare to the Acadiana region.

Vertical Expansion

Decatur County Memorial Hospital engaged TEG to design the 2-story vertical expansion which would add 34,850 gsf; this space includes: 19 inpatient medical/surgical beds and 3 acuity-adaptable beds on the third floor. The fourth floor is currently shell space. The building was originally designed to accommodate vertical expansion under a previous building code. Therefore, TEG worked closely with structural engineering partner, TRC Worldwide to creatively solve the issue of transferring seismic forces to the ground which meets current building code requirements.

Two structural fins were added to the exterior of the existing building to accommodate shear forces. In order to conceal these additional structural needs, TEG incorporated them into

the building as architectural elements, adding interest to the otherwise flat façade. The new inpatient space is designed to offer a more efficient flow and work processes for the clinical staff, and to enhance the patient experience. We are pleased to have been hired as Decatur’s design partner and enjoyed working with Leadership, Board and Staff.

The Quality Care You Want. Close By.

Decatur County Memorial Hospital

This three-story, 49,800 sf Proton Therapy Center is an addition to the Willis-Knighton Cancer Center in Shreveport, Louisiana. Willis-Knighton Health System engaged TEG to design the first installation of the IBA ProteusONE®, with Pencil Beam scanning technology, in the world. The design has been one of collaboration between TEG & IBA, as the actual equipment was still in design early in the project.

The proton therapy system is housed in a 1-1/2 story concrete vault, consists of a cyclotron, beam transport system and gantry treatment delivery system.

The first floor of the addition houses the Proton Therapy Center which includes exam rooms, dressing areas, a special procedure room,

administrative space, offices, training/conference room, consultation rooms, facility support areas and the treatment room/vault.

Second and third floors are shelled construction for future clinical/physician use. A portion of the third floor provides equipment support and storage areas for the proton unit. Although the Proton Center is an extension of the existing Cancer Center (constructed in 1999) a new separate entry, access drive and canopy give the Proton Therapy Center a distinct identity.

World-Class Technology“Our patient & staff satisfaction has been outstanding. Patients & families are more comfortable & staff have the space in which to provide quality patient care. TEG was a great partner throughout the project. They met with us routinely & were very accommodating with designs & revisions from clinical stakeholders.”

- Linda Simmons, FACHEPresident & CEO

Decatur County Memorial Hospital

We have worked with TEG for many years; it was helpful to have that experience on this project. The proton therapy system was still in the final phases of design and TEG helped ensure that we stayed on track.

We all can attest to the importance of investing in our communities! Enhancing the places and spaces where we all find comfort, recreation and enjoyment is such a vital component of a healthy community and can serve as a catalyst in new development and re-development.

This past year, TEG has been an integral team member with the City of Jeffersonville and Mayor Mike Moore in the design and development of the Big 4 Station Park in Jeffersonville, Indiana’s Central Business District.

The Big four Bridge is being transformed into a pedestrian walkway that will connect the two vibrant communities of Louisville, KY and Jeffersonville, IN. The bridge, erected in 1895 as a railway bridge, has sat rusting and without any termini since 1969. The two cities that sit opposite the Ohio River, have worked together to repurpose this former transportation artery into a “connector” that will positively impact the economic and social development of these two cities.

Recently, Wayne Estopinal, Jeffersonville native, delivered a presentation highlighting the Park project. It is the first public park space designed and constructed in Jeffersonville in 133 years. Design elements of the park include a sloping, curved walkway from the bridge to the central water feature. A terraced reflecting pool is symbolic of the falls of the Ohio; its’ significance lies in the history of the two communities being settled here centuries ago. Parallel to this are light towers, leading to the center reflecting pool, surrounded by a radial public gathering space. At its center is an illuminated light shard that artistically details the water level during the 1937 flood.

Other park features include two city blocks of green space, an open air pavilion, playground, bike rentals and public restrooms on 7.6 acres. It is truly a community asset that will be enjoyed by residents and visitors; and has already sparked new development. TEG is proud to be the designer working with the City and officials to create a legacy space such as this.

In PROGRESS

UNIvERSITY Of LOUISvILLE SOCCER STADIUM | DR. MARK AND CINDY LYNN STADIUMLouisville, Kentucky

The construction on the University of Louisville Dr. Mark and Cindy Lynn Stadium is racing toward the goal of substantial completion by August 1, 2014. The training center envelope is nearly complete as attention turns to the building’s interior. Within the stadium the project’s signature aesthetic component, the tensile fabric shade canopy is complete. The installation of the red chairback seats, with complementary black seats (that spell "LOUISvILLE") is nearly finished. U of L is poised to take the pitch with a double-header kicking off August 29 with the men against 2014 NCAA College Cup runner-up Maryland, and women against Ole Miss.

NORTH CADDO MEDICAL CENTER | REPLACEMENT HOSPITALVivian, Louisiana

The components of this Critical Access Hospital resemble most larger acute care hospitals, with the exception of the 9,000 sf Clinic attached to the facility. The clinic and NCMC serve to educate future rural physicians through their LSU/NCMC Rural Residency Program; this partnership is a unique asset to the community as well as the university. A groundbreaking ceremony was held September 9, 2013 for the $18 million, 3-phase project and construction is underway with an anticipated completion by 2016. The new hospital is being built on the same site where the existing hospital resides. TEG and NCMC collaborated to develop smart deliverable solutions that allow the existing hospital to be in operation 24/7 throughout the construction duration.

This facility is a 4-story, 115,000 sf medical office building that contains a multitude of services for Norton Healthcare, which continues to serve the growing demand in Louisville's east end. The design challenge was to accommodate three separate entries on the ground floor, while maintaining an efficient site footprint; this is critical where land costs are at a premium. KORT, and a Norton Immediate Care Center, and the building’s main entry all share the first level.

This 16,986 sf renovation provides a functional, aesthetically-pleasing space, designed to foster team collaboration, while maintaining a comfortable, inviting atmosphere. Designing a space aligned with GLI’s guiding principles included a new reception area, hosting space, board room, conference space and work station layouts; creating workspaces that are collaborative, flexible and fun. Material suitability, harmonious visual and tactile features all support the foundation of the interior finishes. Installation of innovative artwork and textiles soften the incorporation of structural elements into the overall design.

TEG Architects collaborated with HKS and Norton Healthcare to develop a Masterplan for Kosair Children’s Hospital that would permit the expansion of hospital services including the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). Multiple construction packages were utilized in the implementation of the plan. Package 1 of 3 consisted of approximately 36,000 sf of addition and renovation. The 19,451 sf of renovation contains 30 NICU Beds, an emergency department lounge, lockers and conference room. An 8-story addition of 16,638 sf features a generator building, upgraded entry and lobby, on-call rooms, offices and conference room and a new trauma elevator.

This current facility, formally known as Pattie A. Clay Hospital, involves an extensive renovation to the exteriors of all buildings on campus. The entrances to the hospital and two medical office buildings are designed to have new metal panels and glass. All of the buildings are to be stained in order to create a cohesive campus aesthetic. Interior renovations encompass a new 20-exam room emergency department, laboratory, cafeteria, main lobby, chapel, gift shop, pharmacy expansion and OB/Women’s Services. Site modifications, including a traffic circle at the entry, will improve and organize vehicular traffic. The project is expected to be completed by Spring 2016
