AAAEA Essay/Poster Contest This contest is open to all students in 3rd-8th grades in Chicagoland schools. Students submit an essay and a poster about an engineer who has made an impact on their lives. The purpose of the contest is to stimulate students to consider careers in engineering. Illinois Institute of Technology Bridge Contest for High School Students The construction and testing of model bridges promotes the study and application of fundamental principles of physics and helps high school students develop hands-on skills through bridge construction. American Nuclear Society (ANS) ...................................................................... 1st Floor, North Hall The American Nuclear Society develops and disseminates nuclear science and technology information. Its members work in such diverse areas as education, research and development laboratories, government, power plant operations, medical and isotope applications, and engineering design and services. Working Bikes has several different bike powered systems for you to try and see how good you are at generating electricity to power a stereo, hair dryer, water pump or other elec-trical devices. Working Bikes collects about 7,000 used bicycles a year in the Midwest and distributes them locally as well as to bike projects in developing countries. High-Rise Building Design: A TALL Adventure .............................................................. Room 114 Engineering principles of structures will be discovered through discussion of engineering marvels like the Trump Tower Chicago and the world’s tallest tower, the Burj Khalifa. A hands-on shake table will allow select students to construct their own LEGO® building designs and test them to destruction under a simulat-ed earthquake. Structural engineer, Larry Novak, will reveal the secret world of how buildings stand up and discuss an engineer’s tools of the trade such as the amazing strength of shapes, structural materials, wind engineering and sustainability will be uncovered in this interactive and educational program. IL CHIP Child Identification Program .............................................................................. Room 218 No parent ever wants to live through the nightmare of having a child missing. Parents can be prepared for the unthinkable with an identification packet put together by IL CHIP. The Freemasons of Illinois provide FREE of charge to parents a complete child identification package that can be taken home or carried with the family on vacation. The information, most of which is contained on a CD, is compact and totally private. The only item IL CHIP keeps is the parental permission form.

Parents will receive: Color photo that records image and height and is digitized on a convenient CD that can easily be

circulated by police to the media and distributed across the state within an hour via Illinois’ Amber Alert program.

DNA Sample taken through a saliva cheek swab is the latest tool in the scientific arsenal to make positive IDs of lost children.

Fingerprints are the oldest form of positive identification since they are unique to every person. Recorded video interview captures appearance, speech patterns, personal characteristics,

and mannerisms.

Join Jerry Zimmerman, Mr. Freeze of Fermilab, as he demonstrates the interesting and fun properties of cryogenics using Liquid Nitrogen (LN2). This exciting, science-based demonstration is filled with lots of sur-prises and a few explosions! The different properties and effects of the extreme cold are demonstrated and explained.
