St. Vincent dePaul
As Christians we are called to be holy. Holiness entails seeing our-selves as one with Jesus. We could not do this on our own. We all have a secret sorrow, that makes us feel that we can never approach the greatness of God, or even that of the saints. Yet God can do what seems impossible. God sent Jesus with a message of reconciliation. Through His Incarnation, His min-istry and His death and resurrection He has reconciled Himself to us.
As Vincentians we work on our own brokenness and also step into the brokenness of others through visiting them in their homes, lis-tening to their stories, providing hope through caring material assis-tance and other referrals to meet those needs. During this time we make our ‘home visits’ through phone calls and follow up through mailing bill payments or providing gift cards for the immediate needs. Last year in 2019 we disbursed just over $30,000. All of that mon-ey was for those in need right here in Door County. The biggest need was to help with rent (35% of the total) followed by help with utility bills (24% of the total). The additional expenditures were for food, medicine, car repairs, gas cards and other miscellaneous ex-penses. The need is great right now and we expect it will be even be greater as this year goes on. In the Gospel today, Jesus says to us: “If you love me, you will keep my commandments. Whoever loves me will be loved by my Father and I will love him and reveal myself to him.” When we give to the poor, God indeed pours his love, peace and joy into our hearts, into our lives and through us into the hearts of those who are poor. If you can help please mail a monetary donation to our Stella Maris Office clearly marked for Saint Vincent de Paul and please keep us and those we serve in your prayers
Prayer Shawl “Wrapped In Love and Prayers”
What is a PRAYER SHAWL? A Prayer Shawl is a piece of fabric that is crocheted or hand-knit from a soft, comforting yarn. As the shawl is creat-ed, it is prayed over by its maker for the intentions of its recipient. Shawls are collected and blessed by the parish priest.
After Covid19 restrictions end, the Prayer Shawl Ministry meets the first Monday of each month at 1:00 pm at the Sister Bay church site to pray for their community while knitting, crocheting, sewing or quilting. Due to Covid19 Upon completion of the shawls a final blessing is offered before the shawls are sent on their way. Shawls are then distributed (at no cost) to anyone who has a need. This is the way to continue to reach out to our community, letting them know others care and send their love. Personalized free lessons are available if you would like to learn to knit or crochet. Are you a former knitter or crocheter? We would love to invite you to be a part of our ministry. Do you have left over yarn? The ministry is always looking for donations of clean, full skeins of yarn. After the pandemic is over, the yarn may be either left at the Egg Harbor office or at the Sister Bay church. If the church happens to run low on shawls a notice will be placed in the bulletin to get those needles working. Knitters/crocheters are encouraged to pray as they work so that prayers are actually knit into the shawls, wrapping the recipient of the shawl in the love of God. Contact ministry chairperson Dixie Van Vorous at (920) 421-4277 if you know of someone who would benefit from a prayer shawl. Thank you in advance for any contribution and your continued sup-port to this ministry.
FOOD PANTRY VOLUNTEERS NEEDED-As our parish CARE 24/7 Food Pantry begins to see increased usage due to the econom-ic consequences of this pandemic, we may need to increase our restocking of the shelves to twice each day. To provide for this it would be great to add a few people to our current pantry volun-teers. This is a rather simple task that would take 10-30 minutes once a week. If you are interested or have questions about this, please contact Jan Liss at [email protected] or at (920) 839-2630. VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL has been cancelled this summer. RESPECT LIFE-As Americans, as Catholics and as pastors of our people, we write therefore today to call our fellow citizens back to our country's founding principles and most especially to renew our national respect for the rights of those who are unborn, weak, disa-bled and terminally ill. Real freedom rests on the inviolability of every person as a child of God.—United States Conference of Catholic Bishops—“Living the Gospel of Life,” © 1998 USCCB. MAY FOOD ITEMS being collected is canned vegetables for the CARE 24/7 Food Pantry, a ministry of Stella Maris. Donations can be left at the pantry. Thank you. ARE YOU IN NEED OF HELP? In the midst of this epidemic, if you are in need of assistance or information of any kind, The Door County Emergency Support Coalition is available to help you. For NONEMERGENCY assistance call: NORTHERN Door County (920) 421-9111 or (920) 421-4422; CENTRAL and SOUTHERN Door County (920) 746-6927 or (920) 746-6928.

The Fund was designed with flexibility to ensure resources may be shifted as conditions and needs change throughout this crisis. For Online donations visit www.RespondDoorCounty.org. Worship and Music Column
The Story of Peaceful Prayer by Maureen Briare
One of the absolute privileges of being a pastoral musician is sharing the ministry of music to comfort the grieving at funeral Masses. What a supreme gift. Truly there is no other art form that touches us and stirs us so profoundly as music. Our soul, our emotions, our memories and celebrating life, through beau-ty and prayer is a close encounter with the Divine. At funerals, I also feel blessed to hear ‘story.’ I love hearing the inside sto-ries and testaments of a life well-lived, getting reminders that ‘it’s not what you do, but how you love,’ that leave the lasting impressions, memories and legacy in our earthly dwelling.
Many years ago, as a young mother and young nurse, I took a job as a home hospice RN. Never before had I worked with the actively dying and, to be honest, I was scared to my core. But I was surprised and my heart was cracked open by the unknown, the suffering, the gratitude, the brokenness, the generosity, the smells, the sorrow, the vulnerability, the laughter, the faith, the trust. Never did I expect to find the Sacred where I was scared, but I did.
A Celtic harp was a surprise Christmas gift from my husband, and I speak from my heart when I say that this gift transformed me and influenced my life path. When I laid the harp near my heart and embraced it to ‘make the strings sing,’ I experienced in an intimate way, the powerful gift that music is. It was the first instrument where I challenged myself to be free of written music and, instead, have my fingers memorize melodies and beloved hymn tunes, while creating my own flourishes and accompaniments that evoke the heart and specialness of the harp.
Our ability to hear and appreciate music starts with the spark of us! The human sense of hearing is the first sense to develop in utero and often stays intact to the very end, even if a patient appears to be unconscious and can’t see or speak or eat. That’s why music can be so healing, comforting and palliative at the end of life.
I started bringing my harp when I visited hospice patients dur-ing the time of their vigil, the constant presence of loved ones and family around the bedside when the time of mysterious transition to eternity is drawing near. As the harp strings were plucked, the memories and tears flowed, inspiring tender melo-dies. The breaths became even. A transcendent peace filled the room, a connection with the Sacred, the Holy. I felt the real presence of God in our midst. And as the last breath of the patient was drawn and silence filled the room, what was initial-ly scary for me felt utterly Sacred, almost surreal. My heart was forever imprinted in those moments where, for me, beauty and God were openly united in music.
