KEVIN FEEHAN President
The Works International Visual Arts Society
Visual art, design, music and performance for 13 days to start the summer: What a great experience!
As president of The Works International Visual Arts Society, it is my pleasure and honour to welcome you to the 2014 Works Art & Design Festival, from June 19 to July 1, now in its 29th year.
The Works is North America’s largest free outdoor art and design festival. Last year it attracted more than 404,000 people enjoying 963 works of art by 778 artists, featured in 52 exhibits and 240 events, including 26 participating Arts and Culture Organizations in Edmonton’s Downtown Arts District and around town. This year the focus of the festival will be on Energy and the theme will be Movement: social and physical movement, change and transformation, transportation, and activism. In addition, the festival again features The Works Canadian Aboriginal Artists Program for the 6th year.
Thank-you for helping us kick off summer with an artistic shot in the arm, with contributions of artists from Edmonton, across Canada and from around the world!
Kevin Feehan, President
On behalf of Prime Minister Stephen Harper and the Gov-ernment of Canada, I would like to thank all the organizers, artists, and volunteers who helped bring The Works Art and Design Festival 2014 to life. On the road to Canada’s 150th birthday in 2017, we have a wonderful opportunity to cel-ebrate everything that makes this such a remarkable coun-try—including innovative visual arts that add vitality to our cultural landscape. We are proud to support events like this festival that give Canadians the opportunity to enjoy the arts in their own communities.
The Honourable / L’honorable Shelly Glover
THE HONOURABLE SHELLY GLOVER
Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages
As minister responsible for culture, it is my pleasure to welcome everyone to The Works Art & Design Festival 2014.
For 29 years The Works Festival has showcased the best in art, design and new media. This year’s MOVEMENT(S) theme is sure to highlight the wonderful motion and energy found in visual art and design. It is a vibrant visual demonstration of how much culture matters and adds to the world around us.
My thanks to The Works International Visual Arts Society and all the volunteers and artists, who make this festival possible and contribute to Alberta’s vibrant culture.
The Honourable Heather Klimchuk

THE HONOURABLE HEATHER KLIMCHUK

AMBER ROOKE
Executive Artistic DirectorThe Works International Visual Arts Society
Every year I am moved by the generosity and openness that I encounter nearly every day of planning The Works Art & Design Festival. It is an utter privilege to be able to work with so many people and organizations that value art and design, and that engage in community the way that our partners, sponsors, artists, interns, volunteers, and collaborators do.
In 2014, I suggest you also prepare to be moved. From story sharing and poeticism, to encouraging connections and foster-ing reflection, the artists presented offer you an open invitation to skip along the surface, or to wade out as deep as you want.
Over 13 days, I highly recommend that you read at least one artist statement, talk to at least one other person about art, and make at least one observation, out loud, on screen, or on paper about your experience. If you do this, who knows what movements we’ll start.
Thank you for taking part,
Amber Rooke
Over the past few decades, the one positive constant in the challenge to bring people Downtown has been our summer festivals. And the leader of the pack, the first of the mark each year, the true harbinger of summer in the City has always been The Works Art and Design Festival with its proliferation of satellite venues throughout the core and huge main event on Churchill Square. It’s no secret that successful Downtowns all over the world have in common one key ingredient; people on the sidewalks, lots and lots of people. After all these years, The Works Art and Design Festival still fills our Downtown with crowds of happy folk creating that same vibrancy they have for decades. And this easily explains why the Downtown Business Association has, since day one, been a willing and eager sponsor and will continue to be. Good luck and good weather in 2014.

Faster Than the Speed of Sound
Michael Markowsky
As part of the Federal War Artist program, Markowsky’s work was created with the intention of honouring the Canadian Armed Forces in a fun and accessible manner. His work is a collection of drawings of the surrounding sky and landscape. These drawings were illustrated while flying in a Royal Canadian Airforce CF-18 Hornet Supersonic fighter jet. Throughout the festival Markowsky will be creating a series of live paintings to accompany his drawings. There will be a video installation where you can watch this experience of drawing in the clouds.
RECONCILIATION?This exhibit brings together three artists addressing Canada’s Residential School system, highlighting the present day repercussions of these institutions. The ex-hibit places the experiences of families and individuals who are affected front and centre, and asks, what does reconciliation look like? Featuring works by Ken Arm-strong, Dawn Marie Marchand, and Lee Deranger.
A View into the Circle
Ken Armstrong
Ken Armstrong has been documenting Canada’s homeless populations for the last decade. As this project evolved, Armstrong discovered that he was not only documenting homelessness; he was documenting the lingering, adverse results of the residential school system. These representations evoke despair and hope. Armstrong is an award winning documentary photographer and works with IRS survivors at Boyle Street Community Services as an Indian Residential School Resolution Health Support Worker.

A Place to Hang Your Stories
Dawn Marie MarchandDawn Marie Marchand’s provocative installation is an exten-sion of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission. She invites survivors, family of survivors and people affected by Indian Residential Schools in Alberta to contribute their stories to her installation. This community involvement brings awareness to the severity of systemic oppression for those directly af-fected and the community’s intergenerational survivors as well. Reconciliation? gives people who haven’t always been heard a voice and in some cases can be a space for healing.
Recent Work
Lee Deranger
Stephen Harper’s apology to Aboriginal and Indigenous peo-ples affected by Alberta’s residential school system is framed with toilet paper in this critique of the Albertan government’s response to a shameful aspect of Canada’s history and identity.
THE WORKS GATEWAYSNickelas Johnson and Aaron Paquette
This year’s gateways are a collaboration with illustrations by Nickelas Johnson and text by Aaron Paquette. They use tongue-in-cheek commentary to speak to migration and displacement. They explore indigenous perspectives on the current economy, movements in technology, social inspira-tional movements, and movement from life to death.
CHURCHILL SQUARE EXHIBITS11am – 9pm
I See You
Françoise Thibault
The world is a subjective construct individual to each of us—the entirety of our perception arises only in our mind, not in the world that might exist without us in it. Thibault’s work invites you to explore this idea by placing a glass screen between you and the world and inviting you to draw. Your marks subjectively interpret the world, while also blocking it out as the glass fills with your interpretation.
Site 1: François Thibault, I See You
Device for the Emancipation of Landscape
Matthew Walker
Walker challenges us to re-evaluate how we see, hear, and understand the places that we inhabit. This installation uses compositions of field-recordings of the landscape as am-munition for poetic gestures. This sound compilation of bullfrogs, wild dogs, and migratory birds along with other uncultivated expressions of the landscape challenges us to re-imagine our relationship to our surrounding environments.
*First Sounding: June 19th on Churchill square at 4:30pm.
Check in with theworks.ab.ca, social media, and the info tent on Site #1 for schedule of Sounding locations and times.
The Traveler
Tony Olivares
Professional dancer and artist, Olivares, travels through the audience adorned in white paint and sheer material in this powerful performance. Born in Managua, Nicaragua, he experienced the country’s Civil War in 1978 – 1979. His experiences and perceptions of religion, war, and his sexual identity are among the topics that have inspired him to create evocative performances.

Apparitions
Alysha Creighton
Alysha Creighton’s performance based practice draws on her background in dance, exploring moments of physical, social and psychological tension between people. Her video is pro-jected on buildings. The projections appear seamlessly inte-grated — inhabiting and transforming the space. Apparitions will be visible only at night, experienced on the periphery of Sir Winston Churchill Square.

Quattro
National Stiltwalkers of Canada
Quattro is a meditation on the value “4”. North, South, East, West. Hot, warm, cool, cold. Forth, back, left, right. Up, down, in, out. Pairs of opposites and their moderates create “Quattro’s”, a set of relationships expressed as themes that can be explored through form, colour, movement, and sound/music. A simple quartet that plays out the various relationships that can occur between 4 different yet related entities. June 23 , 5:45pm and 28, 2pm

ANNUAL REPORT // BARBARA JACQUES / COSSETTE
THE CHALLENGE First challenge: This brochure is meant for a variety of sectors such as high level politicians, business people and financial institutions. Each sector has its own priorities and views on the many challenges facing poorer countries and will have a different level of familiarity with the Enablis organization. For some it will be a first-time encounter, while for others it will be the last nudge toward involvement and membership.
Second challenge: In a world with so many good causes and tragedies, Enablis wants to shine in a bold, modern and positive way, hoping to persuade successful entrepreneursto give back to their community.
Third challenge: Due to limited financial resources, the brochure must have a long, useful life and stay pertinent over time.
THE BRIEF Enablis is a Canadian non-profit organization [ NPO ], founded by Charles Sirois, whose mission is to provide financial and professional support to entrepreneurs in West and South Africa and in Latin America through its member network. Enablis has proven its importancein Africa. It is now ready to expand into other countries around the globe by implementing a franchise system overseen by a federation of governors/mentors.
The mandate is to design a corporate brochure that will offer a complete overview of this not-for-profit organization and describe its origins, methodology, the federation, foundation and its positive impact.
This brochure will be a call to concerned people to join Enablis in supporting new entrepreneurship as a means to defeat poverty.
THE STRATEGY It was decided that the single brochure would become five thematic brochures, each one having a precise role: 1–Who (our origins), 2–How (our methodology), 3–What (our federation), 4–Why (our foundation) and 5–Now (our impact). By doing so, Enablis can distribute only the specific brochures needed and over time, if necessary, update only one of the thematic brochures.
For Enablis, the focus of action is on the individual entrepreneur, which in turn creates jobs in their communities. It is about people taking charge of their future and by doing so, profoundly changing their local communities. We wanted to create a tone that evokes pride and confidence, not sorrow but optimism, and to highlight the work of Enablis at the local level.
THE PROCESSWe used full-page textured portraits and quotes in bold graphics, all in a saturated colour palette. Titles and graphic devices were inspired by tribal markings and icons. We also wanted to clearly establish how a relatively small investment to support a new entrepreneur could be beneficial not only to the person’s immediate family but also to the surrounding community by creating jobs. We named this effect ‘’The Enablis Effect’’ alluding to a ripple effect. Therefore, the graphics presented important data and key concepts in a manner that simulated a flow of ripples and waves.

In many ways, the Indigenous people of Canada are facing their own war, a Cold War, that has been waged for hun-dreds of years. The general public is unaware of most of this. Paquette hopes to give them a visceral experience to share some of the struggle; especially, to say to those who struggle: you are not alone.

19 EDUCATION
THE WORKS SOCIETY EDUCATION INITIATIVES
Enbridge Art InternshipsThis fast paced program combines hands-on experience and theoretical learning as participants from across Canada complete in-class modules and apply this knowledge to their positions at The Works Art & Design Festival and The Places Art & Design in Public Places Program.
The Places Art & Design in Public Places Program offers internships that provide new cultural workers with meaningful professional experience. Open to any student or graduate of an art & design or culture-related education program, these placements bridge the gap between education and cultural work. The program uses on-the-job training, mentoring, and hands-on experience to help interns develop critical business and arts administration skills in project development, management and marketing
Enbridge Art Internships at The Works Art & Design Festival focus on connecting theoretical learning with real-world applications through in-class instruction and practical work experience. Since 2001, The Works Society has generated 203 intern placements. These select interns have benefitted from working with experienced arts presenters alongside Governor General Award-winning artists, international art and design educators and prestigious Canadian art curators.
To encourage ongoing skills development, Works to Work allows participants to return summer after summer to progress from Assistant to Coordinator to Supervisor to Lead Supervisor levels.
University of Alberta’s Department of Art & Design has led the way in providing their students the opportunity to earn 6 credits by participating in The Works Society’s Education Initiatives. There are now many opportunities for students from Canadian institutions to earn credit as Program participants.
For more information on the Enbridge Art Internships at The Works, visit: http://www.theworks.ab.ca/education-1/

WHERE CREATIVITY MEETS OPPORTUNITY
Enbridge is proud to sponsor and support internships for students from across Canada with The Works International Visual Arts Society.
Enbridge Art Internships through The Works help to provide new cultural workers with meaningful job experiences. These positions at The Works Art & Design Festival and The Places Art & Design in Public Places Program bridge the gap between education and cultural work through fast-paced, hands on learning. The interns play an integral role in beautifying and revitalizing Edmonton’s downtown core.
Enbridge delivers more than the energy you count on. We deliver on our promise to help make communities better places to live. It’s part of the reason we were named one of the Global 100 Most Sustainable Corporations in the World.
