I’m proud to report that the Froedtert Hospital Foundation experienced one of its best years ever – raising over $3.2 million to support Froedtert Hospital programs. The number of donors exceeded 2,300. This result is all the more impressive given the difficult economic climate. At Froedtert Hospital, philanthropy is our margin of excellence, ensuring that we can fund programs above and beyond what our budget permits. Many of these programs wouldn’t be possible without the generosity of our donors. We are always grateful for their support.

Your gifts supported a wide variety of programs at Froedtert Hospital – large and small. Just a few examples include: support groups, chaplaincy volunteer programs, educational materials for patients, nursing research funding, physician fellowships, clinical research, and the new Mortenson Construction Healing Plaza. was a milestone year for Froedtert Hospital. Thirty years ago, Froedtert Hospital opened its doors to patients and during those 30 years the hospital has built a national reputation, ranking in the top 10 academic medical centers.

Our fundraising efforts support that success. Contributions from grateful patients, other individuals, corporations, foundations and estates, fund programs across the hospital, ensuring excellence in patient care, clinical research and medical education. We completed major fundraising for our Mortenson Construction Healing Plaza and a dedication event was held on October 19, attracting more than 200 donors and friends. The Plaza project was fully funded by more than 400 donors. In the past year, we added new board members including Andrew Haag of Moore Oil Company, David Marcus of Marcus

Investments, Jeffrey Metz of RE Enterprises, and Kip Ritchie of Potawatomi Business Development Corporation. We look forward to their representation and wisdom in advancing our foundation goals.

I would like to highlight two events in 2011: Our signature fundraiser, The Froedtert & Medical College of Wisconsin Desert Classic, moves to an exciting new location, Gainey Ranch in Scottsdale, Arizona. Please consider joining us on February 26 for a great day benefiting our Clinical Cancer Center. We are also planning a new event here in Milwaukee. On May 14, the Heritage & Hope Celebration will mark our rich heritage and look forward, with hope, to our future. You will be hearing more about this event in the months ahead. Uncharacteristic cool Arizona temper-atures and cloudy skies provided the backdrop for the 16th annual Desert Classic Golf outing on Saturday, February 27th, 2010. Sponsored by Irgens Development Partners, LLC, the event included a day of good-natured, competitive fun for over 85 golfers and sponsors, all to benefit the programs and services of the Froedtert & The Medical College of Wisconsin Clinical Cancer Center. Attendees enjoyed a classic southwestern buffet lunch, 18 holes of golf with challenging contests, a raffle, cocktails and an awards reception. Despite yet another broken window to a golf course home, a good time was had by all.

The Desert Classic has raised more than $1.2 million to benefit the Froedtert and the Medical College of Wisconsin Clinical Cancer Center. Mark your calendar for the 17th annual event on Saturday, February 26, 2011 at our new venue, Gainey Ranch Golf Club, located in the heart of Scottsdale.

Research to treat and cure. Gifts supported studies focusing on: • How radiation affects cognition and quality of life in patients treated for brain tumors. A database with 150 patients was created and a pilot study was begun to identify risk factors that increase risk for radiation-induced brain damage. • How long-term treatment of Inflammatory Bowel Disease affects intestinal function. • Drug studies aimed at slowing the progression of Alzheimer’s disease and brain imaging to track cognitive changes caused by the disease. • How patients handle the stresses associated with diagnosis and management of breast cancer. A newly formed “skills group” focuses on the use of mindfulness, distress tolerance, emotional regulation and interpersonal effectiveness. • The genetic basis for ovarian cancer with the ultimate goal of predicting which types of drugs will work best for an individual woman with the disease.

Advances in patient care. Gifts supported: • A new part-time nurse coordinator in the Skin Cancer Center to work with solid-organ transplant patients, who have an elevated risk for skin cancer. • A new laser for the ENT Clinic to remove precancerous and other lesions causing voice problems. • A part-time Chaplaincy position to assist Cancer Center patients with their spiritual needs. • A second mobile clinic for the annual prostate cancer screening event at Miller Park. • Laptop computers with web cam capability for bone marrow transplant patients to communicate with family and friends during their long hospital stay.

Education for staff, physicians and patients. Gifts supported: • A technologically advanced, highly interactive mannequin, “SimMan,” funded by the Froedtert Hospital Volunteer Associates for training nurses and other health professionals. • Four fellowships, or specialty training programs, for physicians interested in careers in under- served specialties including cancer care, the neurosciences and women’s sports medicine. • Four $2,500 nursing scholarships. • Bone marrow transplant nurse education, including certification training, as well as funding for an international conference, books and other needs.

The Froedtert Hospital Volunteer Associates provided funding for “SimMan,” an interactive

mannequin used for training nurses and other health professionals.

Sim Center At Froedtert Hospital, 21st century tech-nology isn’t only for treating patients. Sometimes it is the patient. Meet SimMan®, an anatomical patient simulator used in advanced medical education and training. SimMan presents a variety of medical conditions so realistically that it can describe its own symptoms and even cry. Nurses, physicians and other health care professionals can experience a variety of protocols ranging from inserting an IV to simulating a full cardiac response. An intricate monitoring system gauges strengths and identifies areas for improvement.

SimMan was funded with generous support from the Froedtert Hospital Volunteer Associates, which raises money through the hospital’s gift shop, Bobbe’s Gift Shoppe on 92nd Street, and other initiatives. Funding from the volunteers helps to support items outside the hospital’s annual capital budget. “There aren’t always opportunities for this level of learning and advanced training,” explained Volunteer Services Manager Katie Pokorny. “SimMan

provides that, and is something that is for everybody.”

Through his role as a board member, Kip will help support the hospital foundation’s leadership team in raising money for programs and services that Froedtert provides. One such example is the hospital’s Indigent Care Fund, which helps fulfill non-medical support services critical to patients and their families through stipends for groceries, clothing, transportation, necessary medical equipment and short-term prescription needs. A $25,000 pledge from the Forest County Potawatomi Foundation—the “giving arm” of the Potawatomi tribe—will help finance the fund throughout the next year. “By supporting the Indigent Care Fund of the Froedtert Hospital Foundation, we are helping to promote excellence in health care,” explains Forest County Potawatomi Foundation Executive Director Kaye Garcia. “A great deal of what the fund provides extends beyond health care through their Support Services Program and it is an honor to be among their many supporters.” Adds Kip, “The Potawatomi are grateful to the greater Milwaukee community that has supported our business and it’s important to us to give back and support the community in return.”

s a member of the Potawatomi tribe and Chief Operating Officer for the Potawatomi Business Development Corporation, Kip Ritchie found that joining the Froedtert Hospital Foundation Board in June was a way for him to fulfill both his personal need and professional responsibility to give back to the community. “It’s important for me personally and for the tribe to be actively engaged in the community,” he says. “Froedtert is a well respected organization and needs helping hands around it to support the hospital foundation and the goals of the hospital in general.” Most people in metro Milwaukee are familiar with the Potawatomi both for their tribal enterprises as well as their investments for improved health and education in the community. What many aren’t aware of is that these investments have long included the Medical College of Wisconsin for its efforts in the fight against diabetes, which affects a disproportionately higher number of Native Americans compared to other ethnicities in the U.S. Now, with the time and talent Kip will lend to the board and a new funding pledge from the Potawatomi, the partnership between the tribe and Froedtert Hospital is even stronger.

That began what would become an annual tradition for the Rose family, one that, combined with matching gifts from some of the siblings’ employers, has grown to a sum of nearly $20,000. It’s nothing any of them set as a goal, just something that built naturally as each gave what he or she could over the years. “It’s a misnomer that you have to be a certain age to make donations and be committed. Perpetual giving adds up over time, and you never know when your dollar will be the one that pushes them over the top to find a breakthrough,” Jennifer explains. The Roses work with Froedtert Hospital Foundation staff members to keep track of donations made on their father’s behalf, making it easy for everyone in the family to contribute regardless of where they live, what they can give, or when during the year they give it. “We have confidence in the people at Froedtert to use the money for research and are hopeful that new treatments will result in better quality of life and someday, eventually a cure for this type of brain tumor,” Rebecca says. Jennifer adds that the annual donations have come to symbolize that “the fight we asked him to fight, we’re still standing behind. Froedtert gave us hope and we want to help make that hope a reality for other families.”

ernard Rose was a true patriarch. The beloved husband and father of seven instilled in his five sons and two daughters a good work ethic, an appreciation for helping others and the belief that you get out of life what you put into it. “He always wanted us to excel at what we did. He was confident

that each of us could do that,” remembers Rebecca, the second youngest of the siblings. After Bernard was diagnosed in 1998 with a Glioblastoma Multiforme, an aggressive brain tumor, he chose to fight the disease not only for himself but for his wife and children. After initially being told at another area hospital that there was no hope, the family sought a second opinion at Froedtert Hospital where, his youngest daughter Jennifer says, he was treated “with the confidence and belief that we’re going to do everything we can to try to beat it.” At Froedtert Hospital, Bernard underwent a second surgery, chemotherapy and clinical trials. When he lost the fight a few months later, his wife and children decided that all he went through would not be in vain. The family decided to direct memorials to the Froedtert Hospital Foundation for brain tumor research in his memory.

Signature Society Luncheon The third annual Signature Society Thank-You Luncheon was a celebration of people committed to the future of Froedtert Hospital. The luncheon featured comments from Signature Society members Bill Petasnick, Froedtert Hospital President and CEO, and David Larson, MD, Professor and Chair of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. Members and guests shared stories of their Froedtert Hospital patient experiences and motivation for their charitable giving. Signature Society is the donor recognition group for people who include Froedtert Hospital Foundation in their will or living trust, or designate the organization as a beneficiary of a charitable trust, life insurance policy, retirement plan or charitable gift annuity. roedtert Hospital has been part of Pauline and Frank Fichtner’s life for 30 of their 54 married years. Back when the hospital opened, Frank was working for the company that made the plastic laminate countertops at the nurses’ stations. The Fichtners attended the community open house where, at Frank’s suggestion, Pauline added her name to a volunteer

sign up sheet. “When I started, there were 25 patients in the hospital. All there was was the hospital building,” recalls Pauline, who started by working in the gift shop. She still helps at the gift shop – recently renamed Bobbe’s Gift Shoppe on 92nd Street – as well as at the West Information Desk and as a member of the board of directors for the Froedtert Hospital Volunteer Associates. “They nominated me as the board historian,” she says of the Volunteer Associates. “I have a long memory.” “Boy, does she have a long memory,” Frank adds with a laugh.

Frank became a volunteer, too—first as a guide and then as a driver after he retired in 1996. Today he audits gift shop receipts every Friday. On the cusp of their fourth decade as volunteers, the Fichtners also have taken an extra step to make sure their support continues well into the future by designating an amount in their wills that will be given to the Froedtert Hospital Foundation from their estate. By virtue of their estate gift, they are recognized as members of the Froedtert Hospital Foundation’s Signature Society. They opted for setting up the planned gift now simply so that it’s in place “in case something happens.” In the few hours each week they spend volunteering at the hospital, they have built lasting friendships, seen the hospital’s growth and advancements in medical technology, and witnessed the endless amounts of compassion patients and their families receive. “The whole situation with the care and the people who run the hospital—they’re very dedicated and in most cases that’s their lives also,” Frank says. With their planned gift, Frank and Pauline will continue to provide the kind of financial support that their efforts in the gift shop have contributed to over all these years. “For any organization, if the money isn’t there, they have to make a decision to do this or that,” Pauline says. “If you can give them the money, they can do this and that.”

This year she made another gift, this one earmarked for the Nursing Scholarship Fund. Now in its fifth year, the fund provides four $2,500 scholarships to eligible Froedtert staff members. Selected applicants use the scholarships for educational advancement in their field that may otherwise be financially difficult for them to accomplish. “Ray was one who, when he saw a need, he was there,” Marlene explains of making the memorial gift in his name. “Hospitals don’t always have the extra funds for certain things, and if there is anything we can do to help the nurses or further their education, that’s what Ray would have wanted.” She credits his therapists, too, for their efforts. “I couldn’t have picked better,” she says. “I think they helped tremendously in his quality of life, which was the best it could be for what he was going through.” Last year the Esser family made another donation, one to the Healing Plaza. A bench in Ray’s memory will be placed there with an inscription that summarizes the compassion he and his family found in the care they received: “God’s love is everywhere.”

rom the day of his stroke on September 29, 2006, through the end of his courageous battle with cancer in November 2008, Ray Esser and his family were continually connected to Froedtert Hospital. Through it all, Ray’s wife, Marlene, was by his side. “If you think your marriage and love is strong, it increases by so

many times when you’re the caregiver,” Marlene says. “Ray was incredible. He never complained. Once in a while we’d cry together, but he wasn’t a complainer in life and he didn’t complain about this.” The couple were married for 58 years. Requesting charitable donations in lieu of flowers after Ray passed, Marlene and the couple’s three grown children, Mary Beth, Michael, and Thomas, made a memorial contribution to the Froedtert & The Medical College of Wisconsin Clinical Cancer Center. They worked with the Froedtert Hospital Foundation to find a fund that would adequately reflect their gratitude, deciding to use the gift to help send nurses to a national oncology conference. “Especially when Ray was in hospice, the care was amazing,” Marlene says. “It amazes me the understanding you feel from them. I even asked if they were trained in that area because we found the compassion so great, but, no, they have that in them naturally.”

Healing Plaza Dedication A colorful autumn day provided a beautiful backdrop for the dedication of the new Mortenson Construction Healing Plaza. More than 200 benefactors, staff and community leaders gathered for the celebration in the plaza, located just outside Froedtert Hospital’s East Clinic entrance. Visitors strolled the garden, viewing the many benches, stones and pavers with tributes honoring family, friends and health care providers.

The Healing Plaza provides much-appreciated green space. The park-like oasis features interesting landscaping, a waterwall and a large pergola that serves as the centerpiece of this 20,000-square-foot space. The Mortenson Construction Healing Plaza was funded entirely with contributions from more than 400 donors. The Froedtert Hospital Foundation continues to accept gifts for tribute messages inscribed on bricks and tiles.

an internal committee came up with the bowl-a-thon idea and have fine-tuned it every year. “Our employees really rally around this, and we have a good support system in some of our vendors who give every year because they believe in the cause as well,” explains Process Displays’ Vice President of Human Resources, Jessica Schneider. A pool tournament each summer raises additional funds that are put toward the Strike Cancer - Spare Lives grand total that, on average, reaches approximately $12,000 each year. “Every ounce of time that goes into this event is worth it. It’s an easy use of resources for a great outcome,” Jessica explains. “We do feel like family, truthfully, and we want to take care of our employees.” And the employee whose diagnosis started it all? He’s in remission following the successful treatment he received at Froedtert and marked his 24th year with Process Displays in October. “I know he speaks very highly of Froedtert and the care he received. We’ve had other employees whose family members support Froedtert for the same reason,” Jessica says. “It’s a great place to raise money for, in our back yard. It’s a comfort to know we can receive great care here.”

The New Berlin-based company designs and manufactures the types of signs and displays that retailers use for in-store promotions. But what has made them the kind of company to be named a Top Work Place by the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel is that they are equally committed to results that have no bearing on their bottom line. Case in point, the company’s Strike Cancer - Spare Lives Bowling Outing. Begun in 2004 after an employee was diagnosed with brain cancer and received treatment at Froedtert Hospital, the now-annual company event brings together employees, vendors, friends and family for a Friday afternoon of good-natured competition, silent auctions and raffles. Many of the prizes are products Process Displays has made — pool table lamps, pub signs and other items promoting nationally recognized brands — giving employees and vendors a chance to own something they helped create. The company also provides pizza and refreshments, and employees who take part in the event receive an afternoon off. It was company president Bob Zanotti who led the development of the event. Nursing Scholarships Patients and families often tell us how grateful they are for the care provided by Froedtert Hospital nurses. Many of our nurses pursue professional advancement through continuing nursing education and research. A program funded by grateful patients and donors to the Froedtert Hospital Foundation awards annual scholarships to four of these staff members, each of whom is enrolled in an accredited nursing program to earn undergraduate or graduate nursing degrees. For the 2010-11 academic school year, four Froedtert nurses were awarded scholarships of $2,500 each. The fifth annual nursing scholarships were awarded to: Sabree Tillman, Cardiology Clinic; Morgan Maves, 4P; Jenette Dooley, Birth Center (Mom/Baby) and Julie Bluma, Department of Surgery.

Fellowship ProfileEstablished by donors to the Froedtert Hospital Foundation, four fellowships have been awarded to physicians who have completed residency training and are pursuing further specialization. The Daniel M. Soref Fellowship for Clinical Neuroscience was established in 2003 with a gift from the Daniel M. Soref Charitable Trust. This one year Fellowship is awarded to a physician with special emphasis on clinical research. This full-time appointment in the Department of Neurology is held by Aamir Badruddin, MD.

Fellowship Profile

The Donald J. Schuenke Cancer Fellowship was established in 2006 as a memorial for Donald J. Schuenke, a dedicated vice chairman of the Froedtert Hospital Board of Directors and chair of Froedtert Hospital Foundation’s Board of Directors. The purpose of the Schuenke Fellowship is training the next, and subsequent, generations of cancer physician specialists. This two-year Fellowship has been awards to Kimberly D. Ridolfi, MD.

Fellowship ProfileEstablished by donors to the Froedtert Hospital Foundation, four fellowships have been awarded to physicians who have completed residency training and are pursuing further specialization. The Women’s Sports Medicine Fellowship was created in 2002 as part of the Sports Medicine Center at Froedtert & Medical College of Wisconsin to address the unique physical, psychological and medical issues that female athletes face. This full-time appointment is held by Karie N. Zach, MD.

The Mazie Froedtert Willms & Sue Froedtert Cancer Fellowship was founded to honor the daughters of Kurtis R. and Mary Froedtert. The Fellowship was established as an endowed Fellowship with the purpose of training the next generation of cancer physician specialists. Froedtert staff go “above and beyond” in their care of patients. Through their charitable gifts to Froedtert Hospital Foundation, they also inspire others to support Froedtert programs. Since 2005, Froedtert staff philanthropists have contributed over $100,000 to the Froedtert Hospital Foundation. Many of our staff give to support patient care, education, clinical and nursing research, often in their own departments. Most give through our annual Staff Campaign. Those gifts are recognized here. Club 30 donors are those staff members that have made a commitment of $30 or more per pay period in honor of Froedtert Hospital’s 30th anniversary.
