From the President Benita Felmus It was wonderful to see so many Congregants on Sunday morning for the Annual Meeting. Since not everyone was able to attend, please be aware that Cantor Dara Rosenblatt was voted to be our new Cantor starting in July. Please join us on Friday, July 6 at 5:15pm in the Social Hall for a Pre-Neg honoring her arrival. Also, we reached 25 Life & Legacy commitments;
therefore we will receive the additional bonus of $1200. The fol-lowing are my comments from the meeting. At Yom Kippur, during the High Holy Days we came together as a community to pray as expected and as we always do. But, there are so many more examples throughout this year that we have come together as a Kehilla/Community to make a difference for each other. The attendance and participation during the Cantor Search weekends was amazing. Todah Rabah - thank you. We had over 150 congregants each Friday night, over 100 congregants each Satur-day morning and 40 more for Saturday Havdalah. Also, on average, 88 surveys were returned for each candidate. The responses were thoughtful and honest and helped the Search Committee, Execu-tive Committee, and the Board identify Cantor Rosenblatt as our potential new Cantor. Your vote today will solidify this decision. Casino Night again was a great event and a success with won-derful attendance while raising over $12,000. Thank you to David and Geri Isenberg for chairing this event. As a Kehilla/Community we had our first Passover Challenge. Todah Rabah - thank you to all who participated. We raised over $103,000 from 125 donors thru this challenge, and with the match-ing gift of $50,000 we raised the most money ever for Beth-El. These dollars will allow us to end this fiscal year without a deficit and start the next fiscal year off strong. Lastly, we as a Community have once again met the Life & Legacy goal of 18 new members and we will again receive the $7500 from the Greenspoon Family Foundation for meeting our goals. And not to brag, but we are the 1st organization in Rich-
mond to reach this goal! Yashakoach/Congrats! While I have mentioned the big events, these are not the only things we have done as a Community. SATO’s success this year, with CARITAS and The Shoe Project to name a few, is only possible when we all show up. Attending Rabbi’s Encounter RVA programs expands our awareness and the overall Richmond Community thoughts about religions. Thank you to Norma, Faith, Krista, Josephine and Chris for all the long days and hard work behind the scenes to make our com-munity run smoothly. I would be remiss if I did not recognize those who have served on the Board. Their collective service adds up to more than 40 years: That’s a lot of Thursday nights! Melody Imburg Marci Linas Bonnie Wilensky Martin Slutzah Marsha Feldstein Robyn Galpern Gary Weiner Susan Kornstein THANK YOU!
Next year we will have more things to work on, and I hope you continue to support the Men’s Club and Sisterhood, the backbone of our Community, in their support of the Religious School and Temple. The Site Committee is working on plans for our locations’ best uses. As things solidify and a plan is created we will come back to the Congregation for your input. Please make sure to welcome Cantor Rosenblatt to our com-munity and make sure she knows how excited we are to have her at Beth-El.
Thanks for a great 2017/18 and looking for next year to be as good!

Help Wanted in the Sisterhood Gift Shop
Is your Child at the Religious School on Wednesday afternoons or do you have 1 1/2 hours to spare?
We are in need of a person to man the Myra B. Dan-zing Gift Shop (at the school) during Religious School
on Wednesdays, 4:30 – 6pm.
The Myra B. Danzing Gift Shop is a fundraiser for Temple Beth-El Sisterhood.
Interested? Please contact Arlene Slutzah, Gift Shop Chair at 804-747-0765 or [email protected]
Thank you for your generosity! Please join us Saturday, June 9 at Grove Ave.for services & a special Kiddush luncheon in your honor
A Note from Rabbi KnopfDear friends,Our congregational trip to Israel is fast ap-proaching! I would be honored to take a kvittel (a little prayer written on a small piece of paper) to place in the cracks of the Kotel ha-Ma'aravi (the Western Wall) on your behalf. If you have a
prayer you'd like to send with me, you can bring it to the Temple, or email it to [email protected], or mail it to Temple Beth-El 3330 Grove Ave. Richmond, VA 23221 before June 15. There is also a beautiful custom of giving tzedakah to a person trav-eling to Israel, so he can donate it to a worthy cause there on your behalf. Jewish tradition holds that placing your charity in the care of a person traveling a long distance protects him, since no harm can befall a shaliah mitzvah, an agent for performing a good deed. So, if you want to protect me on my journey while making the world a better place, you can bring some tzedakah to the Temple before June 15, and I will take it with me to donate.

News from Brown Religious School Ramona Brand, Director of Youth Learning
How We’ve Grown, How The Year Has Flown!
Is it possible that May has come and gone and we have wrapped up another religious school year? I feel a little like Carol Burnett, tugging on my ear and singing “Seems we just get started and before you know it, comes the time we have to say, so long.” Or in our case, “L’hitraot." We have had a great year! We have welcomed
new and returning students to our school, celebrated holidays, expanded electives, sung joyously, improved our Hebrew, delved into Torah, learned about Israel, lived Jewish values, enjoyed hands-on learning and made good friends. Numerous factors go into creating a strong religious school program. Our dedicated teachers spent many hours planning lessons and activities that reflected the vision of the Religious School Committee. Rabbi and Hazzan led family programs, and guided students through B’nai Mitzvah and Confirmation. Parents volunteered to assist with field trips and special programs. We connect with community organizations to enhance our school curriculum. These are the factors that make our school effective; the kids are what make our school special. Seeing our students grow Jewishly throughout the year, watching their smiles, feeling their excitement and sharing their triumph in mastering new skills is what makes this work sacred.
Now Enrolling for 2018-19For Grade Pre-K through 10: Our Nesiyah program provides a dynamic learning environment where Jewish education is joyous, fun, inspiring and spiritual. Tem-ple Membership not required for students in grades Pre-K through 2nd grade. Easy on-line registration: bethelrichmond.org/school.html
We are Hiring TeachersPassionate about Jewish Education? Want to make a difference and an impact? Are you creative? Can you think outside the box when it comes to Jewish educa-tion? Do you want to give kids authentic Jewish experiences? If you answer yes to these questions, you belong here! Seeking teachers for Pre-K through 2nd Grade and Hebrew Contact Ramona at [email protected]

Students are challenged on our new low-ropes course and learn in the nature center on the final day of Religious School.
Mazel Tov to our Confirmands! On Sunday, May 20th, Rebbeca Falik, Ben Doniger, Court-lyn Dranoff (pictured above left to right) led a beautiful Confirmation service and spoke from the heart about their commitment to Judaism.
