Resident Spotlight: Germaine Fox

That hair… those eyes! Just two of many attributes that make Germaine (Demge) Fox stand out in a crowd. Her stylish white head of hair and eyes of green seem to draw you in. Dear Lord, if we could only be so lucky to look

as good as Germaine does at age 95.

Germaine was born in Oostburg, Wisconsin, but moved to Sheboygan by the time she entered school. She graduated from Central High School, and then attended the Business College of Sheboygan for three years. Shortly after her schooling, she met her husband, Vern through a group of friends who worked for The Sheboygan Press. Her husband was an advertising publisher for The Press at the time. They had four children together: Patricia, Peg, Pam and Paul. She later divorced and continued raising her four children on her own.

Germaine worked at Sheboygan South High School as the Financial Secretary for 20 years, all while raising her kids. She knew that is where God wanted her to do her best work. She smiles proudly while talking about her kids. Her oldest daughter Patricia has a PhD in Sociology and is a retired college professor. Peg lives in Whitefish Bay and is “always there for someone when they need her.” Her third daughter, Pam has an RN, MA and is a Licensed Mental Health Practitioner in Lincoln, Nebraska. She was the 1st runner up in the Miss Wisconsin Pageant in 1962. Her talent in the pageant was playing violin. Germaine humbly admits the talent may have started with her, since she played piano at an early age. She said her youngest son, Paul, lives in Sheboygan

and was a lead custodian for the Sheboygan School system.

Germaine has five grandsons, 3 great grandsons and 2 great granddaughters, who live in CA and WI. They are

each very special to her.

Germaine has been a member of St. Luke United Methodist Church in Sheboygan for 70 years. She sang in the choir for 52 years, was the Church Wedding Hostess for 45 years, a member of the United Methodist Women, Altar Guild, and Rachel Circle. She enjoyed serving the church in many capacities including preparation of food

for the pantry. Germaine also was an auxiliary volunteer for many years at St. Nicolas Hospital.

Germaine used to enjoy gardening and keeping her kids smartly dressed and on top of current fashions. She recalls at an early age making her own clothing. She’s always been crafty that way. In fact, she made the bright

pink stone dangling earrings you’ll often find her wearing.

She is considered somewhat of a miracle in these parts, since she has had two open-heart surgeries and three hip replacements. Germaine still lives her life with a grateful heart and shares a kind word to those she encounters

each day. “God is not done with me yet,” she says.

Not only does Germaine dress fashionably, but her apartment here is decorated with quite the flair as well.

Germaine is one FOXY lady.

Staff Spotlight Lori Norum – Cook

Lori is our full-time cook, but she is also a hairstylist, waitress,

artist and much more! She grew up on a dairy farm in Cedar

Grove, Wisconsin. She was a member of the 4-H there for 10

years! She also loved spending time in the kitchen with her mom.

Her mother was the “Julia Child” of Cedar Grove. Lori and her

mom spent Saturdays baking for her extended farming family.

Many of the recipes she uses today came straight from the Norum

kitchen. Lori has one brother, Paul, who now helps run the family

farm.

In the evening and on weekends, Lori still cooks at the Country

Grove restaurant in Cedar Grove. Her cooking career started at the

Country Grove as a dishwasher at the age of 12. She was then

promoted to waitress, and after that, cook. After high school she

decided to enroll at the VICÍ Capilli beauty school in Milwaukee.

She was a stylist for twelve years but her passion for cooking

drove her back to the kitchens at Country Grove once again.

Lori loves to cook, but LOVES people even more so. Her favorite

memories are the conversations she has had with customers and

truck drivers who were patrons of the restaurant. She recalls one

Veterans Day when she served a complimentary breakfast to two

war vets, a memory she holds dear to her heart. Not only were

they blessed with a custom made meal, but Lori received a

blessing as a result of this random act of kindness.

On her occasional day off, Lori loves to RELAX. That could be

watching one of her favorite shows, reading, shopping or being

creative with one of her adult coloring books. On her bucket list is

a dream trip to Ireland someday. Her father was a “Finnegan” –

that sounds a little Irish, right? She also dreams of being a

contestant on one of those TV baking shows! She has two pit bull

puppies, Eva and Daisy that fill her days with love and

companionship. You may have noticed a tattoo or two when you

see Lori. Each tattoo represents a person or event in her life. Most

are to honor her much loved mother who died of cancer.

Please Welcome Lori to our SSC Family! We’re lucky to have her.

Melissa T. and Dana E. in Life Enrichment as well as Lori G., RA from Willow and Sandy K., CNA had the opportunity to participate in a grant funded training program called the Alzheimer’s Poetry Project. This program was developed by Gary Glazner in 2013. The mission of the APP is to improve the quality of life for people living with Alzheimer’s disease and related dementia by facilitating creative expression through poetry. To date, the APP has held programming in 26 states and internationally in Australia, Germany, Poland and South Korea, serving over 25,000 people living with dementia. At SSC, we’ve hosted four “Poetry Parties” and look forward to many more! In January, we will be fortunate enough to host Gary Glazner as he helps facilitate a Poetry Party and helps us conclude our training in April. We hope you enjoyed these three holiday-themed poems created by residents in Willow. We will share more in newsletters to come.

Holiday Poetry Participants: Germaine Fox, Vi Zajkowski, Dorothy Wisniewski, Mae Harder, Kathy Redeker,

Barb Pelkin, & Harriet Jensen

“Santa” “A Christmas Wish”

As a family, That closeness feels good We sang Silent Night with Santa Right in your heart He came to our home in the evening Family gets together Years later, Parents giving us good feelings I found out Even years later It was the neighbor man But we all can be children It must be hard for people who have no one Some time or other Giving gifts Looking at the windows at Prange’s Even if it’s little Maybe we’ll see Santa there It’s something Gifts are all too special It’s the thought She got just as much joy out of it You don’t realize how fortunate you are As you did Time alone Is a gift Look how fortunate we are

“Christmas Trees” The sun is shining

Don’t go into the living room till Christmas Eve It’s cold out The tree is a surprise But it’s warm in here Special mystery of the season You want to get cozy? The tree is our Christmas present too Always a real tree Must add color Colored lights put on by Father Big and small ornaments from relatives and friends Put on by all With presents underneath Our kitty sleeping too! Our time with family is a gift to be thankful for! We’ll keep our tree up for as long as we can Always sad to take it down Away for next year Memories of the crisp pine scent linger
