My coronation was definitely a night to remember!! I was humbled by the outpouring of support by the community and the state of Wyoming!! I want to thank all of my friends,

family and supporters who made this night a success!!

One important person was missing at my coronation, and that was my big brother Ben. He and I have been very close our whole lives. He is in the Navy, stationed in San Diego, but

currently on deployment in the Persian Gulf. He can’t talk much about what he does in the Navy but it has to do with the

Tomahawk and Harpoon Missiles. I look forward to seeing him back home in March. We have a lot of catching up to do!

I was honored to host such a wonderful celebration in Jackson at the Virginian Convention Center! This celebration took countless hours to plan and put together and I want to thank all those who

were so instrumental in making my coronation possible. I am honored to represent the Cowboy State and I want to thank

everyone who made this year become a reality for me!!

God Bless!! Erin Heffron—Miss Rodeo Wyoming 2010

Ready, set, go… and the gun goes off for the race of my year as Miss Rodeo Wyoming at the Denver Stock Show! I just got back from my first official rodeo in Denver and it will be a night to remember!! Although I have been to hundreds of rodeos, carried many flags and picked up multiple mutton busters, tonight was special because I proudly wore the jade crown of my lovely home state!!

I spent 12 days at the National Western Stock Show visiting schools, handing out ribbons for the stock show events and carrying flags during the rodeo performances. I was honored to be invited to the Citizens of the West Banquet, which benefits scholarships to students from Colorado and Wyoming. This year we honored Tom and Becky Kourlis who were an inspiration to the field of agriculture. I had the opportunity to meet many influential people at the banquet and was honored to present Tom and Becky with gifts on behalf of the Citizens of the West.

Throughout my stay in Denver, I carried flags during 12 rodeos!! Most days we had two performances per day so by the end of the NWSS, I had figured out the secrets to carrying flags!! I also had the

opportunity to spend time with the new state queens as this was the first rodeo for many of us. We enjoyed going out to dinner with John Cavey and Pat Thompson who became great friends of mine and are wonderful sponsors of Miss Rodeo America. In the spirit of the upcoming winter Olympics I was able to practice my stunt riding… (more on this later).

I took a day off from the festivities at the NWSS to drive to Laramie for the Premiere of the documentary called The Code of the West: Alive and Well in Wyoming.

This is a video that captured the essence of Wyoming and followed the vision of Jim Owen, the author of the book, Cowboy Ethics. I had the privilege of meeting Jim Owen and I am excited to use this book as a base for my platform for the year. Mr. Owen proposes ten principles to life based off of the old cowboy values that our country was founded upon. I am excited to spread my enthusiasm about the “Code of the West”.

I have had an incredible first month as Miss Rodeo Wyoming and I look foreword to my trip to the Black Hills Stock Show and Rodeo in Rapid City, South Dakota. I was told to wear warm clothes under my queen clothes as Rapid City is known for being pretty chilly!! But after the cold spell in South Dakota, I will be able to warm up on the beautiful beaches of Florida when I head to the Silver Spurs Rodeo in Kissemee, FL. You can keep up with my travels by visiting my blog on www.missrodeowyoming.com

God Bless!!

The autumn leaves of October found me in “The Heart of The Tetons” for Erin Heffrons’ coronation/fundraiser held in Jackson, Wyoming. We all had a wonderful time assisting her in raising funds for the exciting year ahead. Congratulations once again to Erin on her Miss Rodeo Wyoming 2010 title! The Tribute to Chris LeDoux Rodeo, hosted in Casper, is always a special rodeo for the Cowboy State. The weekend began with a Friday night art show held in Chris’s memory at the Parkway Hotel. The grandstands where packed on Saturday night for the indoor rodeo, held in memorial for the Wyoming cowboy. Donna Vold-Larsen’s rodeo stock put on an exceptional show. I was accompanied in the arena by the Cheyenne Frontier Days Queens: Miss Frontier 2010, Rachel Shutter and her Lady-In-Waiting: Amy Berry. After the rodeo concluded the acclaimed ‘Chris LeDoux Memorial Spurs’ were presented to Royce Ford for capturing the champion title for the bareback event. A special treat following the awards was Chris LeDoux’s old Band; Good Times Band and Dustin Evans playing for the fans in attendance.

Heading to Wyoming’s neighboring state of Colorado for the Mountain State Circuit Finals, I realized I was driving to my last official rodeo as Miss Rodeo Wyoming 2009. Joining Miss Rodeo Colorado ‘09, Audra Dobbs in Denver

we reminisced how both of our years had begun in Denver at the Stock Show held in January. How quickly the time has flown by! It was a blast to spend my last rodeo watching our Wyoming and Colorado cowboys compete one last time before many of them headed down to the Wrangler Finals in Las Vegas. The weekend before departing for the 2010 Miss Rodeo America Pageant was my “Trunk Party”. I displayed and modeled my pageant clothes just prior to packing them up in my “trunk” for the journey to Las Vegas. The event was a final preparation for the exciting competition. Our Sheridan Elks Lodge contributed a wonderful

opportunity to see family, friends and thank my gracious sponsors one last time. The Miss Rodeo America Pageant 2010 was an absolutely amazing experience I will treasure for the rest of my life. Getting together with all of the remarkable women I traveled with all year was a blast! We will be friends for life. For seven days we were in complete seclusion with no cell phones, no computers, no outside contact, and chaperones 24 hours a day. The contestants where judged on three main categories: horsemanship, personality, and appearance. A few of the activities we participated in were: personal interview, horsemanship interview, written test on rodeo and equine knowledge, prepared speeches, modeling, media interview, Cowboy Christmas auction, fashion show, attending the WNFR, horsemanship competition, PRCA luncheon with chaps, numerous meals, and impromptu questions ranging from: current events, personality, and rodeo knowledge. What a week!

As Coronation night rolled around on Saturday I was in for a ton of excitement. I was privileged to make top ten as well as capturing: Western Regional Scholarship Award (competitor with the most points not in the top five), The Raeana Wadhams Spirit Award (decided from behind the scenes MRA personnel and given to the contestant who most exemplifies the ideal attitude and sportsmanship Miss Rodeo America should possess), and finally, I brought home the coveted Horsemanship Champion Award!! For the horsemanship component of the competition there are two rounds. We are all given two horses we have never seen or ridden before and expected to execute a reining pattern without warming up the randomly drawn horse. For this prestigious award I was presented with a beautiful show saddle donated by Tex Tan Saddlery. It was truly an honor to represent Wyoming at a national competition. I know that my year wouldn’t have been possible with out the many gracious supporters, sponsors and the Miss Rodeo Wyoming Association. I couldn’t have done it without all of you. Thank you so much for providing me with the incredible opportunity to represent all of you as well as our great cowboy state. It has been a ride of a lifetime. I will always be Wyoming Proud.

2010 Miss Rodeo America Pageant Award Winners

2009 Miss Rodeo Wyoming wins awards at the

Miss Rodeo America Pageant

The 2010 Miss Rodeo America Pageant took place November 29-December 5, 2009 in Las Vegas, NV. Wyoming was represented well by Allie Bass, Miss Rodeo Wyoming 2009, taking home more than one award. Allie won the prestigious award of horsemanship and received a beautiful saddle with silver trim. She was also in the top 10 where she received a Montana Silversmith buckle, won the Western Regional Scholarship, and the Raeana Wadhams Spirit Award. The spirit award is given to the contestant who shows sportsmanship and a good attitude.

Congratulations Allie, on a job well done!

The title of Miss Rodeo America 2010 went to Kelli Jackson of Mississippi, the first Miss Rodeo America for Mississippi. Submitted by: Laurie Thoman-Hernandez, WY Nat’l Dir.

Page 7: Thank You MRWA Allie Bass—Miss Rodeo Wyoming 2009 ......On winning the coveted Horsemanship Category, the Western Region Scholarship, being in the Top Ten & receiving the Reana Wadhams

You did an exceptional job at the Miss Rodeo America Pageant. Were you surprised to win the Horsemanship award and what does it mean to you? I wasn’t expecting to win horsemanship, with the horse I drew. A number of the contestants had more responsive mounts. I felt the two horses I drew didn’t show off the level of my skills as a horsewoman, but like they say “Its not what you get but what you do with what you have.” The Horsemanship award is personally the best and most esteemed award I could have hoped to achieve at the Pageant.

Have you had your trophy saddle on a horse yet? I haven’t put the trophy saddle on a horse yet. The first reason is because its 20 below out right now. Secondly, it’s on display at the Sheridan WYO Rodeo Store (my platinum sponsor) downtown on Main Street, Sheridan. I will probably only ride it for parades and on special occasions, its seems more of a keepsake memory for me. What was the toughest interview question you faced at MRA Pageant and how did you answer it? The question I had the most trouble with dealt with an organization called PETA. It focused on the percentage of animals injured in rodeo performances I nailed the answer to the question. I offered a comparison of work injuries for people. But one of the judges was acting as a PETA advocate and kept arguing with me. At the time, I didn’t know he was just acting. He was challenging me. I thought he truly believed I was wrong. It shook me up a little during the interview. But later the judges informed me I did well.

What part of your preparation for MRA Pageant gave you an edge on the competition? You can’t be too prepared! I studied everything I could get my hands on. I read the PSN faithfully, listened to NPR and watched the news for current events. Knew the media guide inside and out. But, what helped me the most was riding as many different horses I could possible climb on. What was the hardest part of being Miss Rodeo Wyoming? Choosing between which rodeo’s I wished to attend was very hard. There are some amazing rodeo’s held in the United States. I wanted to be everywhere at once! Chasing all the rodeos I enjoyed, I consistently felt behind on my bookkeeping. Mid summer, July through September were

the toughest to get caught up on with all the traveling. I felt bad ( like I was letting my supporting Association members down) about not keeping up on the 60 day requirement on receipts. What’s the best part about being Miss Rodeo Wyoming? My favorite thing was traveling not only around Wyoming but around the entire United States and having the experience of representing the state I live in and love. What advice would you give to young ladies aspiring to be Miss Rodeo Wyoming? Don’t ever give up! Ride and study as much as you can. But the MOST important thing is to love what your doing and have fun with it! What was your most embarrassing moment this year? That’s any easy one! I was wearing an old pair of Wrangler’s and caught them on a gate during the day and got a tear up by the back pocket. When I mounted up on my horse my pants ripped from the very top down to the back of my knee! Thankfully one of the flag girls was very generous to lend me an extra pair of jeans for the rodeo. What was the most rewarding experience this past year? Its an amazing experience to realize you have made a difference. I met so many people who have impacted my life and I look up too. It is awesome to know that I had that affect on others as well.

What was the best trip this year that took you out of Wyoming? What made it so special? Florida was a blast! There were so many girls in attendance! The hosts took us to: Gatorland, Hog Hunting, Armidillo Catching, Airboat Tours, Coco Beach, and we got to eat frog legs, turtle, and gator. Another memorable trip was to Washington D.C. when I got to ride in our Nations Capitol during the Cherry Blossom Parade. Who was the most interesting person you met this year? There are so many interesting people in the rodeo world. The group that affected me the most

were the other state queens. Never before have I been with a huge group of women that have the same values, interests, and goals that I do. These gals have become my lifelong friends and will always admire them. I feel like we’ll be friends for life! Where does your road lead now? I am currently enrolled at the University of Wyoming, studying pre-veterinary sciences. I plan to fulfill all my pre-reqs in Laramie and then transfer to a Veterinary School specializing in large animals. How has this experience prepared you for your chosen career? I achieved an Associates of Science in Engineering and Mathematics from Casper College before 2009 began. Traveling this past year has made me realize that if you, "Choose a job you love - - you’ll never have to work a day in your life." – Confucius. Witnessing people who really love their jobs inspired me to chase something I have always been interested in. Any parting words you would like to add? Thank you so much to my: supporters, sponsors, friends, family, and the Miss Rodeo Wyoming Association for making this past year possible. I have grown so much as a person and had experiences that will last me a lifetime. Thank you all for making this the best ride of my life!
