A NEW CHAPTER IN THE Indian machine tool industry was opened at IMTEX 2013. The first ever BFW-Fanuc controller found its way on a machine. And, the machine, too, was not an ordinary one. Swapnil, the dream machine, is close to my heart. I expect a lot of young and enthusiastic budding entrepreneurs to realise their dreams and hit it bigwith the help of the Swapnil.

The Fanuc Chairman & Managing Director Dr Eng Yoshiharu Inaba and the Fanuc India Chief Ms Sonali Kulkarni share this dream, and support it in an extraordinarily good manner.

Fulfilment of the dream of theseentrepreneurs became an obsession with the BFW Vice Chairman Mr Mishra, who determinedly but gently startedpersuading all at BFW to build a dream machine.

The award carries a statuette, anappreciation certificate, and an amount of `1,00,000 for thedesign team.

No awards for guessing that theSwapnil became the cynosure of theexhibition, and the exhibited unit was sold off before the exhibition couldcome to a close.

This dream machine, Swapnil, became a reality at theIMTEX 2013. The Chairman & Managing Director of Fanuc Corporation, Dr Eng Yoshiharu Inaba flew in from Japan andinaugurated the Swapnil. Swapnil is the only machine tool inIndia to carry a joint BFW-Fanuc branding, a symbol of theextraordinarily cordial relationship enjoyed by the two companies.

The saga of success does not end here! Swapnil went on to win the coveted FIE Foundation Award at the exhibition. This award was instituted in the year 1979 to foster R&D and innovation in the Indian machine tool sector.

INDIA IS A WONDERFUL COUNTRY. Some wonders are more palatable than the others. Forexample, who would like to live without electric supply for eighteen years? But, as per a recent Economic Times editorial, that exactly was what happened to the Afaur village in Saran, Bihar. Whether the power supply has been restored as a result of theeditorial is not known.

This question was carried in the last issue of the BFW Update. THE IMTMA-BFW LIFETIME CONTRIBUTION AWARD 2013 in memory of the late HR Guptawas bestowed upon the BFW Vice ChairmanMr SN Mishra in a ceremony at theinauguration of the IMTEX 2013.

Just before the name of the winner was revealed, the BFW Chairman Mr Arun Kothari addressed the audience, stating that while awards often raise the status of the recipients, on some rare occasions the recipient elevates the status of the award.

Accepting the award, Mr Mishra thanked IMTMA and all those with whom he worked during his 46-year machine toolcareer. Known for his quick wit, Mr Mishradescribed the period as one during which plenty of coolant had flown and tonnes of metal had been convertedinto chips!

Mr Mishra left an indelible stamp over IMTMA in 1992-94, when he headed the organisation as its president. Hepursued industry’s interests withvigour and launched several newinitiatives which are visible even today. He put the Association’s financesin great shape, was an astute crisismanager, inculcated the style ofconsensus building and popularised thestrategic importance of India’smachine tool industry.

At BFW, Mr Mishra oversaw severalmilestones. He set a trend by recording the highest ever exports to Russia in the early Eighties, overcame crippling labourstrife in the pre-liberalisationera, developed a wide range ofproducts, acquired companiesabroad, and came out with a‘Bottom of the Pyramid’ machine tool for the ‘Aam Aadmi’of the industrial world.
