Next question, getting the right course type. Generally there are four different course types, with different durations based on driver experience. The course types are; 2 Day - Novice Operators, designed for a complete novice that has never operated a crane. 1 Day - Existing Operators, this course is for competent operators that are untrained. 1 Day - Refresher Course, for drivers who have an expired ALLMI Loader Qualification. 1/2 Day - Conversion Course, drivers can be trained on an additional attachment. What will the trainees experience? We can deliver the training either on customer premises or at our purpose built site in York, North Yorkshire. At our site we have various different loads to lift, from simple 4-way pallets to metal corner post stillages, loose material and and Packs of Bricks to enable operators to become competent with different loads. Our HIAB and lift accessories are regularly inspected by both ALLMI, Gemini Inspections, Truck Hydraulics Ltd and ourselves, the HIAB is realistic of a working environment and we aim to ensure all drivers are ‘ready to work’ after completing the training. One of the key aspects of this aim is that our machine is Remote Control and the good variety of attachments we can provide – most employers require ‘remote control’ and relevant attachments on the training certificate provided by ALLMI.

Example of an ALLMI Accredited two day course Novice. Day one. The morning consists of greeting all the drivers to our site, usual introductions followed by handing out the ALLMI operators a safety code booklet/manual and watching a video and powerpoint on the dangers of crane operations together detailed explanation of correct operation to get all trainees thinking safety, right from the start. The afternoon builds upon the morning session by further increasing knowledge of crane operations, legislation and maintenance with detailed explanations and further powerpoint slides produced by ALLMI. Once all the theory has been completed the drivers are then asked to complete the theory test paper, and then its out to the Lorry Loader for brief practical session before leaving for home.

Day two. All drivers are expected to competently carry out a pre-use inspection, as detailed on the previous session to ensure the crane is safe to use, this is done at the start of the day. Next a short session of practical exercises to ensure all the drivers are ‘warmed up’ ready for the new tasks to be learned on day two. The instructor will explain how the hydraulics function, the massive lifting power available but also the dangers of improper use. During practical training all the theory is put into practice by stacking/handling a variety of loads on both the ground and load bed of the vehicle. After sufficient practice the practical operating skills test is carried out, then certificates issued once completed.
