“The Saints Among Us”

Carolyn Franzese Phillips, a member of the Communications Team, will be interviewing members of our parish and sharing their stories. We firmly believe that we can learn from and inspire each other. We hope that this leads to developing deeper meaningful relationships beyond sitting next to each other at church.

So, we are embarking on this series entitled "The Saints Among Us" where we can delve a little deeper, share insights and hear some uplifting stories. This series will be made available at www.allsaintsconcord.org/saints-among-us/ as well as a link to it will be included in the Weekly Word.

Do you have a story that you’d like to tell? If so, please send an email to [email protected]

and let us know.

Online Giving

All Saints’ has a new giving feature! You can now give online and through text. Online giving is linked to your “My All Saints” profile and can also be accessed through the Church Life app as well. As of right now there are only two options for giving, the general fund and the assistance fund.

You can also give through texting – text SAINTS to 73256 and include the dollar amount, this will automatically be deposited into the general fund unless otherwise specified. If you wish to give to the Assistance Fund, text SAINTS ASSISTANCE to 73256. You will then receive a text back with a link to continue with the payment process. If you have any issues or questions, feel free to contact Hannah Crone in the church office 704-782-2024 or [email protected].

Vases for Flowers The Altar Guild appreciates donations of any stray vases that you may

have accumulated over the past years. These vases will be used to deliver the altar flowers to parishioners after services on Sundays. They require vases that are at least 4 inches in diameter. You can drop them off behind the volunteer desk in the Welcome Center.

Altar Guild Commissioning The Altar Guild will be commissioned on March 26 at both the

9 and 11:10 AM services. All Altar Guild members are invited to attend either service to be commissioned.

2017 Lenten Study Series: Race and Faith

All Are Welcome to be a part of our Lenten offering, which is centered around the theme, Race & Faith and is scheduled for Thursdays in Lent from 7 PM to 8:30 PM.

We will also consider how the promises we make at every Baptism are meant to affect our behavior.

We will also discuss how we, as followers of Jesus Christ, are to think about race and about who is our neighbor.

We expect other churches to join us during this series. Please invite your friends and neighbors, as they will be benefited by this experience, too.

March 9 RACE: The Power Of An Illusion - Episode 2: The Story We Tell; This video traces the origins of the idea of race to the European conquest of the New World and to the American slave system - the first ever where all the slaves shared similar physical traits and a common ancestry. – Facilitated discussion

March 16 Video “Traces of the Trade”; Filmmaker Katrina Browne learned that her slave-trading ancestors from Rhode Island were not an aberration. Rather, they were just the most prominent actors in the North’s vast complicity in slavery, buried in myths of Northern innocence. - Facilitated discussion

March 23 White Like Me; The video explores the many advantages afforded to whites throughout the history of the United States, and the extent to which they have defined a culture of racial discrimination that continues to this day. - Facilitated discussion

March 30 Where do we go from here? Discussion about what we have learned and what we need to do with this new awareness and understanding.

April 6 Community policing – Concord Police Detective Kevin Berg speaks with us about race and policing

Join the Lent Madness

Lent Madness began in 2010 as the brainchild of the Rev. Tim Schenck. In seeking a fun, engaging way for people to learn about the men and women comprising the Church’s Calendar of Saints, Tim came up with this unique Lenten devotion. Combining his love of sports with his passion for the lives of the saints, “Lent Madness” was born.

The format is straightforward: 32 saints are placed into a tourna-ment-like single elimination bracket. Each pairing remains open for a set period of time and people vote for their favorite saint. 16 saints make it to the Round of the Saintly Sixteen; eight advance to the Round of the Elate Eight; four make it to the Faithful Four; two to the Championship; and the winner is awarded the coveted Golden Halo. The first round consists of basic biographical information about each of the 32 saints. Things get a bit more interesting in the subsequent rounds as we offer quotes and quirks, explore legends, and even move into the area of saintly kitsch.

The Path

I hope you are reading the wonderful bible stories in The Path. This past Saturday the Men's group had a marvelous discussion about Isaac, Jacob and Esau from Chapter 4. Immediately following we had our monthly work day with the focus on spreading gravel to create a walking path through our wooded area right behind the sanctuary.

Parish Workday Volunteers

Thanks to the volunteers for the work completed this past Saturday by Garen Livingston, Ben Smith, Don Foskey, Lee Cox, Ben Helms, Teri & Tommy Jones, Mike McDonough, Len Witke, Robbo Williams, Chris Charest, and myself. With the help of John Deere these 12 souls spread and tamped 16 tons of gravel in about 3 hours! We have started about one third of the total path which, once completed, will provide outdoor walking space not only for our parish but also our community neighbors. I be-lieve one day it will draw new members to our church.

All Saints’ has been working on this outdoor cathedral for several years now, starting with the clearing of an overgrown pine stand, removal of stumps, chipping of innumerable pine limbs, covering the cleared ground with mulch, clearing brush, cutting down damaged trees, installing drains, and trimming the never ending growth of weeds. The creation of The Path will open up this space to be developed into gardens featuring native plants and trees. The Path will create the structure from which the garden spaces can be designed, irrigated, and planted.

The Garden & Grounds of All Saints’

A friend gave me a lovely book by Stanley Kunitz, “The Wild Braid: A Poet Reflects on a Century in the Garden.” Here are several quotes that speak to my soul and what we are creating with The Path and the garden.

"In the woods, one loses the sense of time. It's quite a different experience from walking the streets. The streets are human creations. In the woods what one finds are cosmic creations." "I think of gardening as an extension of one's own being, something as deeply personal and intimate as writing a poem. The difference is that the garden is alive and it is created to endure just the way a human being comes into the world and lives, suffers, enjoys, and is mortal. The lifespan of a flowering plant can be so short, so abbreviated by the changing of the seasons, it seems to be a compressed parable of the human experience. The garden is, in a sense, the cosmos in miniature, a condensation of the world that is open to your senses. It doesn't end at the limits of your own parcel of land, or your own state, or your own nation. Every cultivated plot of ground is symbolic of the surprises and ram-ifications of life itself in all its varied forms . . ."

Come join us as we create The Path. Faithfully, Mark D. Robinson

Vestry Person for the Month of March 2017 - Tina Luckey

I have recently graduated with my Master's in Organization Development at Queens University of Charlotte. I wanted to be an attorney when I was younger.

Since I was a child, my favorite movie has always been “Labyrinth.” I watch it at least once a year. It taught me that while life may bring you challenges, you can overcome them by never giving up. Life is good when you have friends that you can count on.

I have two favorite books. One was a childhood favorite "Green Eggs and Ham" by Dr. Seuss. It taught me to try new food. You may like it. You may not. I love trying new food even today. As an adult my favorite book is "Daring Greatly" by Brene Brown. I enjoyed it because her research on vulnerability taught me the importance of vulnerability.

For fun, I love to watch movies, travel, and hangout at home with close friends and family, to name a few. My food weakness is chocolate chip cookies. I dream of taking three weeks off to travel to New Zealand. I would spend one week to just relax and adjust to the time zone, one week to backpack, and one week to enjoy the beach.

I have been a member of All Saints' for almost 8 years. Easter is my favorite season and John 3:16 my favorite scripture:

For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
