Dear GHS Family,

Thanks to each and every one of you, the 2015-2016 school year was “The Best Year Ever”! We entered the year ready to focus on incredible moments, and there were simply too many to share in one letter. We celebrated our highest enrollment in the school’s history. GHS was selected as a featured non-profit on the 21st season of Visionaries, an award-winning documentary series on PBS which highlights organizations around the world making positive impacts in their communities. The show is scheduled to air late fall or early winter across the country and we will be sure to let you know how you can tune in.

We take great pride in offering equal access to education to the children of our wonderful islands. The diversity of families gives our students an opportunity experienced by few others as we are truly academically excellent, developmentally responsive, and socially equitable. The classrooms are full of young people eager to learn as much as possible every day. Beginning with our youngest, the Early Learning Center was bursting at the seams. Every moment is incredible when you look into the eyes of a three-year-old and witness him or her meet a new friend, discover a new color, recognize early literacy, and experience the joy of the GHS community. Our primary team, grades kindergarten through 2nd, dug deeply into experiential learning through daily center work, collaborative field trips and performing in a “Prime Time Nursery Rhyme” musical, which will become an annual tradition for GHS. The intermediate team, grades 3rd through 5th, continued to expand their engagement in our gardens, taking on the studies of sustainable processes to help both our budget and the Earth, and learning as much as possible about our Caribbean history. Let us not forget their artistic talents which shine through the performing arts opportunities our 4th and 5th graders have with “Broadway Comes to St. John” and Dancing Classrooms. At the Upper Campus, our students really engage as an interdependent community. Students share academic time with their own class and across grade levels. They find their voices to create forums for community action as evidenced by identifying meaningful projects for “Gifft Hill Gives Back” day and with Namasagali Primary School, our Ugandan sister school. The kids shine academically as they earn their placements in National Honor Society, Student Council, World Food Prize, and other academic challenges.

At Gifft Hill School, in addition to achieving 100% college acceptance, we help our students find their place in the world by honoring their diverse talents and interests. I hope you will visit to take witness of the incredible moments which happen every day. We thank you for your partnership; no incredible moment is too small! We are grateful that our students experience academic excellence through experiential learning and compassionate community in our enriched environment. We are grateful for you.

Sincerely,

Dr. Laurie Bottiger PhD Head of School

Why We Give

Miles and Susan Stair

Elana Dandeneau, E.A.R.T.H. Program Facilitator, Faculty member since 2011

“Being a faculty member at Gifft Hill School has allowed me the privilege of a unique community. Last year, I completed my Master of Science in Sustainable Food Systems. That experience further instilled the importance of our mindful, diverse and collaborative relationships to the success of our students and school. It also made me recognize how rare an environment like the one at Gifft Hill School is.

Every day I travel back and forth between both our campuses, working with students within our Farm to School Program. No matter the campus or classroom, I witness investigation, wonderment, perseverance and humility. I am incredibly proud to be a small part of that because these are the qualities I hope future St Johnian community members to have.”

“Our lives together started on St. John, when we met here in 1972, over 40 years ago. We have been so blessed to live and work here and watch our lovely island evolve into the special spot it is today.

Miles and I have always felt that the greatest gift a child can receive is a good education. From those early days in the 1970’s, when Pine Peace School first began, we admired the efforts of parents, teachers, students and the community striving to provide a high standard of learning.

Today, Gifft Hill School is truly one of a kind! On a small little island, the students are exposed to so many experiences…theater, the EARTH program, so many sports offerings and a strong curriculum make it such a balanced program. It has been a true pleasure to see the children of St. John grow, learn, and evolve and move on in their life with a solid grounding in the desire to give back to the community.

St. John has been so wonderful to us and while support can be given in many ways, we love having the chance to give the greatest gift…education.”

GHS Awarded EPA Environmental Champion AwardGHS is proud to announce that we were awarded the EPA Environmental Champion award for the Virgin Islands. GHS environmental programming and efforts improved air and soil quality, added green space and native trees, reduced waste and increased reliance on renewable energy.

GHS’s own Tierney Murrill was the first ever GHS student to receive the scholarship to St.

John School of the Arts awarded by the Broadway professionals.

They were inspired by her love of and natural talent for

dancing and hope she will continue to pursue formal

training to further develop her passion and skill.

Congratulations to Vela Culbert who was honored at the Hebrew Congregation of St. Thomas. Each year, the Hebrew Congregation grants awards to one student from each of the high schools on St. John and St. Thomas who embodies the values of Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. Well done, Vela!

Gifft Hill School’s chapter of the National Honor Society is thriving! Each year, new members are inducted in a special ceremony in front of their peers and family members.

Each quarter, students, staff, and special guests gather for an assembly during which we celebrate the achievements of our Students of the Quarter

and those who earned a spot on the Honor Roll and High Honor Roll.

Students in grades 3-12 participate in the annual Science Fairs.

Kaitlyn Cummings Travels to MonacoThe Monaco Mouse Trap Car Grand Prix is a contest that invites science students to demonstrate their abilities by applying the laws of physics in designing and building a mouse trap car. The mouse trap car gets its energy from the conversion of the potential energy of the spring to the kinetic energy of the moving car. The contest is conducted under the patronage of His Serene

Highness Prince Albert II of Monaco. This year’s contest involved the design of a car that can traverse ten meters in the shortest time. A panel of international judges evaluated mouse trap cars from Europe and the USVI. The panel has selected the top 15 students to come to Monaco to race their cars. One of the selected

participants was our own Kaitlyn Cummings. Congratulations to Kaitlyn on a job well done! Kaitlyn designed a car using a mouse trap for propulsion that went 10 meters in 3.6 seconds. She

placed 4th overall in this world-wide competition! Kaitlyn not only was able to go to Monaco to race her car but she got to sit on the starting line at the Formula 1 races in Monaco.

At an independent school like GHS, the academic rigor of the program is a cornerstone of the experience. What makes Gifft Hill School unique are the innovative ways in which we create an academically rigorous program which is supported by experiential learning and a compassionate community. Our faculty’s Professional Learning Communities ensure students achieve mastery of content through vertical and horizontal articulation of the curriculum from preschool to high school graduation. We ensure that each of our students is challenged and supported to their ultimate success by:

• offering small class sizes and low student-to-teacher ratios

• individualizing college and career preparation for each student

• setting high expectations supported by tailored instruction

• focusing on critical reasoning and the ability to invent and adapt

experiential learning

Experiential learning at GHS augments classroom instruction by bringing concepts to life and making school exciting and fun. From growing, harvesting, tasting and composting in EARTH, to using the National Park as a living laboratory for research and exploration, to writing and performing an original play or our own “Awesome Authors” stories, experiential learning is an integral part of daily life at GHS.

Our educational partners enhance our program by providing amazing opportunities for our students: St. John School of the Arts serves as an extension to our Arts department; Caneel Bay hosts our students in various departments throughout the hotel to experience the hospitality industry up close and personally; World Ocean School/Roseway, in collaboration with Kimball Union Academy, get our students on the high seas. Dancing Classrooms Virgin Islands, New England Youth Theatre, and Broadway Comes to St. John create world-class performing arts instruction.

Don’t you wish you could be a GHS student?

The RosewayOur 8th grade class had an amazing week aboard The Roseway. Their trip took them to Vieques, Culebrita, and Culebra, where they snorkeled in a turtle sanctuary, had lessons in teamwork, seamanship, active watch, and literature of the sea —and even climbed the rigging!

compassionate community

Part of what makes GHS so special is our commitment to compassionate community. At GHS, we believe that when children (or adults) are unconditionally valued and supported, anything they dare to dream is possible. A compassionate community is achieved by:

• Instilling the importance of respect, integrity and cooperation.

• Valuing all members of our community as crucial to our shared success.

• Ensuring a welcoming and supportive family atmosphere.

• Giving back and paying forward to our island and global community

GHS students are proud to give back to their community! One of the favorite events at GHS each year is our school-wide community service day, Gifft Hill School Gives Back. Students and faculty from preschool through 12th grade participate in service projects across the island, including fundraisers for local non-profits like the Animal Care Center and St. John Cancer Fund, trail clean-ups, landscaping, maintenance and painting projects, visiting with the elderly, feeding the homeless, and more.

The panels are installed and functioning at the Upper Campus, so we are realizing savings on electricity each month.

Next, we retrofitted our lighting systems for maximum efficiency and created an educational program for our students and the greater community to lead by example in creating a sustainable school, island and world.

The next phase will include retrofitting the cooling systems.

sustainability The EARTH Team traveled to Madison, Wisconsin for the 8th Annual National Farm To Cafeteria Conference! Chef Lori Dudkin, Elana Dandeneau, and Mary Vargo presented with an

exhibit entitled “Farm to School on a Small Island.”

The 5th graders worked with Mr. Sean to learn about our energy consumption at the Lower

Campus and kept detailed records on peak usage times and which appliances require the most

electricity. They then presented their information to the school via videos as well as presentations at

monthly assemblies.

What it

means for GHS

Our Farm to Table program is a celebrated example of experiential learning at Gifft Hill School. Students work with Chef Lori and Dr. Dave Minner to plant, grow, harvest, and prepare food from our gardens for enthusiastic Farm to Table and Community Cafe dinner guests at events on- and off-campus. Thank you to Erica and John Yob for hosting last April’s event.
