KSS Air Ambulance Launches New Schools Initiative 21
Welcome to this month’s School News. School News is the brainchild of Claire and John Turner who have five children and a background in advertising and education.
This month we have a couple of exciting competitions; we are still running our Buckmore Park competition. This is your last chance to enter, so sign up those budding Karter’s! We also felt as it was Easter we would indulge the sensation that is chocolate, so look out for that competition too and win, otherwise I will have to eat all the Chocolate.
We wish you and your families a lovely spring break, let’s hope the sun shines. Let us know what you get up to especially if you visit somewhere really great in our wonderful county of Kent, we would love to hear from you.

As we move into the second half of the school year, and with warmer weather on its way (not long now!), we are also approaching our busiest time. We are already on course to beat all previous records, with participation figures of over 3100 so far this academic year. This is something of which all of us working in and for Thanet Primary Schools should be proud. CONGRATULATIONSWell done to St Peter’s Junior School, who won the Handball tournament, they beat Dame Janet in the final, with Upton 3rd and Palm Bay taking 4th spot.
Similarly, congratulations to Upton who won the Year 5/6 Sports hall Athletics, with St Saviour’s a close 2nd and St Nicholas 3rd. Both winning schools will go on to represent Thanet at the Kent School Games finals and we wish them every success.
DANCE CHAMPIONSOur inaugural Dance competition was a great success. The standard and variety of dances that were presented by the 5 schools that entered was amazing and I did not envy the judges who had the task of deciding the places. St Joseph’s were worthy winners with an ener-getic ‘street dance’ with St Peter’s runner-up with an elegant ballet. The other teams from Upton, Christchurch and St Laurence are to be congratulated for their energy and enthu-siasm and thanks to Scott Tift for organising and hosting the event at Christchurch Juniors. The children and spectators were treated to a marvellous performance from local dance crew ‘Wisewoods,’ who are the UK under 16’s Street Dance Champions and we hope that more schools will wish to enter next year.

Readathon at St Peter’s SchoolSt Peter’s celebrate book week!
St Peter-in Thanet CE Junior School celebrated Book Week in style by hosting their first ever readathon. 42 children from across the school, two from each class chosen due to their engagement and enthusiasm for reading and all things ‘bookish’, along with children from the school’s Gifted and Talented Book Club. The bookworms
spent all day snuggled in the impressive library, dressed for comfort in pyjamas and onesies with the odd teddy bear for company! Literacy Co-ordinator Phil Irwin and Drama Consultant Jayne Websper, who organised the event, said, “ The children listened, discussed, laughed and cried, through a large selection of books throughout
the day. ‘Billy the Kid’, by
readthe prolific and wonderful Michael Morpurgo was voted favourite book of the 18 books we managed to read in the day”. Visiting staff members read throughout the day and parents were invited to join in after school.

New Build Funding for HartsdownHartsdown announce refurb
A multi million pound rebuilding and refurbishment programme has been announced for Margate’s Hartsdown Academy. The Education Funding Agency decision has been warmly welcomed by staff, students, governors, families and friends of the academy.Principal Andy Somers said: “This is fantastic news for the whole academy community – and the people of Margate.
“We have stated for many years that the town needs a school building to match the
aspirations of its students and it looks as if we are on our way – at last. “It has been a long road since the disappointment of missing out of the Building Schools for the Future programme several years ago just weeks before we were due to sign that project off.“But in true Hartsdown spirit, we rose to challenge and undaunted we continually improved the fabric of our campus for the benefit of our students with improved IT, music, performing arts, food technology, and resources centres. “Last September we opened the new £1.2 million sixth form studies and media centre, and in October we opened the floodlit all-weather 3G sports pitch in memory of our inspirational colleague and teacher Luke Williams.
“The latest project is part of our ongoing desire to give our students the very best environment and resources. The staff and students have worked wonders in our old and outdated buildings for many years with fantastic achievements at all levels, and I publicly thank and applaud them and our many supporters.”

Pedal Power Kiddie KartersNewington Pupils get behind the Wheel
Kiddie karters are on track for fun and road safety
at Newington community primary school in Ramsgate.
Year 1 and 2 pupils aged between five and seven years old eagerly await their lunchtime sessions in the pedal-powered go karts.
The drivers undergo a driving test before qualifying to be able to use the karts and receive their driver’s licence.
This enables them to drive around the playground tarmac circuit, stopping to pay attention to classmates acting as crossing patrols in their high-visibility coats and hats.
The karts for the Year 1
and 2 pupils were bought with proceeds from the school’s festive fair following the successful trial of go karting for upper school pupils last summer.
Head teacher Cliff Stokes said: “The karts are really popular and the children have a rota system to use them. They are great fun
and good exercise but most importantly they teach them about road safety and respect to other road users and the crossing patrols.”

St Lawrence College at Turner ContemporarySt Lawrence sponsor exhibition
St Lawrence College is Lead Sponsor of the
‘Self ’ exhibition currently running at Margate’s Turner Contemporary and, as part of this partnership, Junior School pupils have enjoyed a fantastic week of events thanks to the gallery’s staff.
The whole College community has really got behind the collaboration
Turner Contemporary staff held two days of hands-on workshops at the School in Ramsgate, then all pupils from Reception to Year 6 visited the gallery last week. The week’s events ended with a round-up assembly in School by Turner Contemporary’s

St Lawrence College parents from Nursery up to Sixth Form were invited to an exclusive evening event at the gallery on Saturday 28 February: “Celebrating the Arts at St Lawrence College”. The evening comprised of performances by the Senior School Choir and Drama departments, as well as a display of pupils’ artwork, before guests were then treated to a private viewing of the exhibition.
The whole College community has really got behind the collaboration. The School’s Principal, Antony Spencer, said “As an independent
school, St Lawrence College is fully committed to supporting and promoting the arts among young people, and looks forward to a continuing partnership with the Turner Contemporary.”

Home Coming for Oscar Winner at Holy TrinitySupernovas Super Excited as Oscar winner returns to former Margate school!
Supernova Class at Margate school, Holy Trinity, are getting a bit of a reputation! They seem to be attracting famous people in every month!! Last month they had world famous explorer, Felicity Aston, to live Skype call them from Iceland. Next month they are going one better!
Mr Ursell, Supernova’s class teacher explained that on March 27th they will have a visit from Arnold Schwarttzman, an Oscar award winning director, who has worked
with Elizabeth Taylor and Orson Welles, who narrated the documentary he won his Oscar for. Arnold lives in Los Angeles now, but he used to live in Margate and is a former Holy Trinity pupil. In fact Arnold plans one of his next films to be all about Margate.
‘on March 27th they will have a visit from Arnold Schwarttzman, an Oscar award winning director’
Arnold was very happy to come back to his old school. Mr Ursell told School News “I got Felicity to call because we have been doing about the Pole and Arnold in because we will soon be studying Margate. But actually more important than the curriculum coverage is the message it sends to my pupils. Sometimes it is very easy to think I am “only” 7 or 8 or I “only” live in Margate or I “only” go to Holy Trinity. The fact is none of this means you cannot aspire to do great things. A few years ago Felicity was ‘just’ living in Thanet. Some years before that Arnold was ‘just’ a pupil at Holy Trinity. Yet they have gone on to achieve great things. I want my class to be inspired that the same is possible for them.”
Of course School News will keep you informed of how thinks went when the Oscar winner visited…and let you know what super star Supernovas have visiting next!!

Marlowe AcademyReading Buddy Programme
Director of Achievement for Sixth Form, Ollie Donohoe, has instigated a reading
buddy programme between sixth form and year 7 students at the Marlowe Academy,
Ramsgate. The programme was designed to give more leadership responsibilities to sixth form students through involvement with students in the lower school. Ollie Donohoe comments: “The project has a twofold aim; to improve the sixth form students confidence and leadership role within the Academy and help support the development of our year 7 students; improvement of reading, presentation of work, social confidence, well-being and behaviour around the Academy. The project will provide a platform for future Buddy System recommendations and the embedding of a successful model.”
The programme was launched in January 2015 and has already had a tremendous impact on the whole year 7 cohort and the sixth form students involved. Through this programme students have developed a love for reading and it has also seen a positive impact on the Academy community, as younger students feel more comfortable with going to the sixth formers to share their successes or any questions. A sixth form student commented: “Year 7s come to us if they have a problem and how they are getting on with certain subjects, we are all pleased that we can help them.
Alex White, sixth form student who has two year 7 buddies comments: “I have a real sense of responsibility as I make sure I attend the sessions as I don’t want to let my buddies down. I also want to set a good example so have seen a change in myself as I am more aware of my actions. It is really nice to see the progress my buddies have made in their reading and I am grateful for this opportunity.”

How to..........Stay Safe OnlineBy Claire Turner
The world of online, Can be a daunting
place. Google, Bing, Instagram, Pinterest, Vine, YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, Linkedin, BBM, Whatsapp the list is endless.
Chances are that if you are anything like me, your children know more than you do. My son is always moaning at me ..
‘OH MUM’
I am constantly asking for help with my iphone or the internet.
In my day (gosh, I sound old) we didn’t learn how to use computers in school, much more important for a girl to learn how to use a sewing machine. As for mobile phones I got my first one as a present for passing my driving test, now I wouldn’t be without it.
I am just as guilty as my teenagers for being constantly on Facebook or playing the latest game, gone are the days of getting a book off the shelf or waiting to visit the library, enter the wonderful world of Google. A common phrase in my house
‘I’ll Google it’
Often there is a race to see who can Google it first. The common theme in today’s
society is the fact we are all glued to electronic devices. I laugh when I look around my house in the evening to see everyone holding some kind of device (yes, yes including me). I say laugh, perhaps that should make me sad, but then that is another How to....., for the future. So how can I keep my child safe online, when I don’t know what half these online places are. The key is to communicate with your child, talk to them about what they are searching, learning and playing. Use the internet to teach yourself so you can learn more, Google those answers you don’t know.
