FROM THE EDITOR...Welcome back to Sporting Club Thamesmead this evening for the second of our three home games in these seven days.

Saturday saw the club entertain Wingate & Finchley in the annual Non-League Day and, despite weather much improved from the home game before, it wasn’t to be on the pitch as the side fell to an unfortunate defeat.

Dulwich Hamlet are our visitors this evening, with the game taking place tonight instead of clashing with the England game last night. We welcome everyone from the Halmet to Bayliss Avenue this evening.

It’s a small break from Ryman Premier League action at the weekend as the Mead embark on the season’s FA Cup journey, welcoming Redhill here - we hope to see you all back again in three days’ time.

BEST OF THE REST...

FROM THE DUGOUT:

KEITHMcMAHON“I am still really positive about the season - yes, it will be hard but I am sure we’ll get it

right & start climbing the league”

Good evening and welcome to Bayliss Avenue for tonight’s Ryman League Premier Division fixture against Dulwich Hamlet.

Firstly, may I welcome Gavin Rose and his Dulwich team to Sporting Club Thamesmead tonight. I hope you enjoy your short stay here and I hope you have a safe journey home afterwards.

Saturday saw us, again, not get anything from a game in which I thought we should have when we lost 2-1 at home to Wingate & Finchley. Yet again, we got punished for mistakes and failed to capitalise on chances when we had them.

This was a game that I thought we could get something from before the game and, after the game, I still thought the same but with more frustration.

Wingate started fairly brightly but we seemed to be coping well until a careless back pass from inside Wingate’s half by George Wilson let Wingate in to go 1-0 up.

That seemed to knock us and for fifteen minutes after that we were all over the place. Rob Budd in goal made a couple of good saves to keep us in

the game during that time.

I made an early substitution inside the opening half an hour. It’s something that I’m not keen on doing but I thought we needed to change things before the game got away from us.

I brought Jon Main on and I thought our shape looked a little better from there. We started to get more in the game and, just before half-time, we equalised when Danny Phillips scored from a great through ball from Sean Roberts.

At half-time I wasn’t too pleased with the first half showing and told the lads as much. The goal had just papered over the cracks and we were fortunate to come in on level terms, but now that we were we needed to lift our performance and go on to win the game as it was there for the taking.

I thought we reacted well in the second half and I thought we dominated proceedings for that second forty-five.

We were getting a lot of joy from Theo Fairweather-Johnson down the right hand side and all we needed was a little more hunger in front of goal.

All that was required from us was to

get our noses in front and, if we had managed to do so, then I’m positive we would have gone on and won the game comfortably.

Things seemed to be getting more favourable for us when Wingate had a man sent off with fifteen minutes to go - at this points, we were having a real go at them.

Unfortunately, though, we seemed to lack the belief to go on and win the game and as we reached the last five minutes of the game Wingate broke away and scored.

Again, I was going mad. We started with a free kick inside their half, but not only did we let them clear it but we also allowed them to carry the ball fifty yards up the pitch without putting in a challenge!

To say I was upset after the game was an understatement. I told the lads that we had threw the game away yet again, and we needed to change things.

I have given players enough chances now and I need to react before we find ourselves in an impossible position, and I have already signed two new players in the past few days as a result of this need for change.

THE MANAGER

THE MANAGER

Dean Pennant has signed from Enfield. Dean is a very strong midfielder and is something that we have been missing. He will need a little time to get 100% match fit, but I’m positive he is a player that we have needed.

I have also signed Uche Ibemere on a long-term loan from Dartford. Uche is no stranger to me as I have known him from his days at VCD, and he also played against us for Cray Wanderers a couple of weeks ago when I thought he looked like their best player. He is young but is very powerful and will be a big asset to us.

I have also agreed to take another decent player on loan and, hopefully, he should be available for tonight, but I can’t name him until it is finalised.

Meanwhile, I have also been busy this week talking to some of my existing squad, as it’s imperative that you are

honest with players and tell them the truth and what your plans are.

Some of them are just not fit enough and need to go away and do a bit of work themselves before I look at them again.

I can’t take any more chances on players - I need them all fighting for me and the club. We knew this season was going to be hard but I do need some more players to step up to the plate and be counted, rather than just the normal six or seven who do that for me each week.

I am still really positive about the season. Yes, it will be hard and we will lose some games, but I’m sure I will get it right and the lads will respond and start climbing the league.

Let’s hope it starts tonight. We have a very tough game again as Dulwich

have had a really good start to the league.

Like us, they have come up to the Ryman Premier this season following a promotion, but they have adapted better than us so far.

Gavin always has a strong side who likes to play football. We played them at the end of last season in the semi-final of the League Cup where we lost on penalties, but it was a very good game.

On that night, we showed great commitment and worked our socks off. This is something we need to do again tonight and for the remainder of the season if we are to get anything from it.

Enjoy the game,The Gaffer

FROM THE BOARDROOM:

PAULBOWDEN-BROWN

“Remember that a noisy & supportive fan base is as good as a twelfth man - so lubricate your throats & let rip tonight”

THE BOARDROOM

May I welcome the directors, officials, players and supporters of Dulwich Hamlet to our new home SCT and a safe journey home after an enjoyable game and refreshments.

During my nineteen-year tenure at Maidstone United, I had the pleasure of visiting Dulwich’s ground on a number of occasions and it seemed very fitting that both Dulwich and Maidstone were promoted within the same season.

Well, here we are in the middle of a three-game run at home. On Saturday we played Wingate & Finchley and lost by the odd goal, although against ten men we could have tied the game up.

Tonight we play Dulwich, who have proved beyond doubt this season that they can hold their own within this league and will continue where they left off last season, so it will certainly be a tough game. Our week then culminates with a tricky FA Cup match against Redhill.

It’s common knowledge that the league table speaks for itself and doesn’t lie but, if you look at our matches, we have held our own against strong and experienced opposition. What I believe has let us

down is player inconsistency and the lack of personal belief in their ability.

As I’ve said many times over the years, players and teams do not become bad overnight. I am sure after listening to the gaffer in his interview after Saturday’s match he knows what is wrong.

Whatever he has to do to put points on the table, he has my unconditional support and personal belief that Keith will get it right and the club will move up the league table.

We are not looking for promotion, just to show all supporters and the non-league world that our promotion was no fluke - it was achieved due to consistency, a squad of players working for each other and a good manager that we are proud to have.

Keith has had to rebuild the squad this season and it takes time and patience to achieve the right mix of players, but I believe on our day we can hold our own amongst the strongest teams of this league. So let’s not all be critical and downhearted due to the results, let’s be positive and support the gaffer, his management team and the players.

I personally know that however disillusioned you may feel, if you

multiply that by one-hundred then you’ll have how Keith has been feeling after a match. But you don’t see him moping around - he knows his job, he knows what is required to rectify matters and he will, in my opinion, succeed.

Remember, this is football. You may play well but, if you do not get the rub of the green and you feel decisions always go against you, you have to accept that that’s life - we have to rise above it and play to our own strengths.

The current squad of players are trying to work for each other. You’ll even see the injured players on the sidelines are still shouting their support and encouragement, and if this spirit is anything to go by it will not be long before we see a rise up the league table to allow us all to enjoy supporting and watching our football club.

Remember, a noisy and supportive fan base is as good as a twelfth man so go and get those throats lubricated and let rip this evening.

Let’s enjoy the football, get behind our respective teams and have a good evening.

DULWICH“The Hamlet boss has been quoted in

recent weeks as saying that his side need to improve their strike conversion rate”

It is set to be yet another stern test for the Mead this afternoon as Keith McMahon’s side continue to try and find their feet in the Ryman Premier League.

The Mead take on Gavin Rose’s Dulwich Hamlet here at Sporting Club Thamesmead this afternoon, who are still riding high off the back of a title-winning campaign last year.

The Hamlet won the Division One South after a couple of failed play-off attempts, and have taken to life in the Ryman Premier League like a duck to water, currently sitting in sixth place with fourteen points from their opening eight games.

Rose’s men have slipped out of the early play-off places in recent weeks following a run of three league games

without victory, most recently losing back-to-back games against AFC Hornchurch and Harrow Borough.

The Hamlet boss has been quoted in recent weeks as saying that his side need to improve their strike conversion rate, having had enough chances to put games to bed.

And he has made efforts to improve that himself, bringing in nineteen-year-old striker Marcel Henry-Francis from Championship side, Birmingham City, prior to the Harrow defeat on Saturday.

“Marcel has just been and I’ve signed him short term to see how he does,” Rose explained.

“I’m sure he will want to sharpen up his play to get back into professional football.”

Amid scenes of wild jubilation at Champion Hill on the final day of last season, Dulwich Hamlet gained the point they needed to win the Ryman South championship and return to the League’s top flight for the first time since 2001.

Now in their 107th season as members of the Isthmian League competition, the club with the famous pink and navy blue shirts can boast an illustrious past. Indeed, between the two world wars, they were the giants of amateur football.

Life in the early days was fairly tough. The club’s original ground in Woodwarde Road had no changing facilities. On match days the players used to walk half a mile through the streets of Dulwich Village to get from their dressing room to the pitch.

Usually they had to carry the goalposts, crossbars and corner flags with them. One consolation was that the players’ route took them through the gardens of the local inn where no doubt they paused on their return journey for a post-match drink or two!

Dulwich were quickly into their stride after the Second World War and in 1948/49 they were Isthmian League champions for a fourth time. In 1949/50 they lifted the London Senior Cup again, and it was in the same season that full-back Reg Merritt embarked upon a long career with the Hamlet during which he made a club record 576 appearances.

It was most appropriate that Dulwich were able to celebrate their centenary in 1993 by moving into a new Champion Hill Stadium. Their famous old ground, which was

situated on the same site, opened in 1931 and for a long time was the mecca of amateur football.

Numerous Amateur Internationals and other important matches were staged there, including the FA Amateur Cup Final between Kingstonian and Stockton in 1932/33 which attracted a record crowd of 20,744.

Sadly, the old ground fell into disrepair over the years and in order to satisfy safety regulations several alterations had to be made which reduced the capacity considerably.

Eventually, in 1991, the stadium was totally demolished as part of Sainsbury’s redevelopment of the area.

Frank Murphy was appointed as manager in March 1994 and he soon transformed Dulwich into serious championship contenders.

In 1995/96 they were the Premier Division’s leading scorers and could have won the title but for a hiccup in the closing weeks of the season. Eventually they had to settle for fifth place, but they finished just six points behind the champions, Hayes.

In 2011/12, Hamlet enjoyed their best season for many a year and were in pole position with three games remaining.

Unfortunately, a rare home defeat at the hands of eventual champions Whitehawk proved crucial and they had to settle for a final placing of third.

In the play-offs, they defeated Folkestone Invicta 2-1 in the semi-finals, but lost by the only goal in

the final away to Bognor Regis Town where a missed penalty sealed their fate.

It was no consolation, but the match at Bognor attracted a crowd of 1,981, easily the biggest to witness a match between two Ryman League sides that season. During the summer, at the League’s AGM, the club collected a remarkable hat-trick of awards.

In addition to winning the League’s Respect award for Division One South, awarded for the fewest yellow and red cards for dissent, for the second season running, Dulwich also picked up the Fair Play award for the division and the Macron Team Performance prize for their excellent disciplinary record.

After the heartbreak of defeat in successive play-off finals, Gavin Rose and his squad had another crack at promotion last season and this time they displayed real mental strength, pipping a well-supported and talented Maidstone United outfit to the Ryman South title.

In an exciting finale to the season, Dulwich drew 1-1 with Burgess Hill Town in front of a 1,137 crowd to finish top of the table, one point clear of rivals Maidstone.

The team also reached the League Cup Final, but for the second time in three years fell at the final hurdle, losing 2-3 after extra-time to a strong Concord Rangers side, now plying their trade in Conference South.

THE PHYSIO

It’s hard to put Saturday’s result into context, as we lost to Wingate & Finchley.

Despite losing Ross before the game, I still felt that we had enough to win it.

Then, after a sloppy goal was given away, we clawed our way back into the game with Danny Phillips netting us a well-worked goal to put us on level terms.

Going into the second half we went out full of expectations, played with a lot of pace and things started to happen.

However, despite getting chance after

chance we just couldn’t score and then, as seems to be our problem, we gave away another late goal.

We must realise that the mistakes we make will be punished as all the sides have got finishers throughout their team.

Now we must stay positive as a group. I know how good these lads can be, but they must realise that standards can’t drop for any minute of the ninety.

Behind the scenes everyone is working hard and I know our efforts will be rewarded.

On a brighter note, Ash is doing well

now.

He’s had the stabilisers taken off his bike and he’s starting to feel the benefits of his hard work, so well done mate!

Carly has been away recently but I’m glad now that she is back to help out with some of the players.

It’s been good seeing some new people watching us at the ground, so welcome to you all and thanks for your support.

RYMAN LEAGUE ROUND-UP

LEAGUE ROUND-UP:

RYMAN REVIEW

Kingstonian lead the Ryman Premier table by a point after Saturday’s round of matches saw the K’s beat fancied Grays Athletic 4-1 at Kingsmeadow.

And the home side had to come back from being a 13th minute Chuck Duru goal down to win, thanks to Andre McCollin, who scored all four in reply! He equalised right on the stroke of half-time, put his side ahead eight minutes after the break, completed his hat-trick five minutes later and added a fourth on 66 minutes.

Wealdstone and Lewes maintained their unbeaten starts to the new season, although only the Stones managed a win on Saturday. That was 1-0 at Ram Meadow against Bury Town, courtesy of a Tom Pett effort after 10 minutes.

The Rooks shared a 2-2 draw against Metropolitan Police at the Dripping Pan – but the home side will be disappointed not to have won the game after the Met played the entire second half with ten-men.

Maidstone United maintained their good start following promotion with a 3-1 win at the Beveree against Hampton & Richmond Borough in front of a bumper attendance of 769. Steve Watt gave the Stones a 17th minute lead that Orlando Smith doubled just two minutes later. New signing Zac Attwood made it 3-0 to the visitors after 38 minutes, but the Beavers ‘won’ the second half with an 89th minute effort from sub Jordan Rocastle.

Dulwich Hamlet, who came up with Maidstone, produced a disappointing

display and can have few complaints about the result at Harrow Borough’s Earlsmead. Dulwich opened the game in confident style and it was no surprise when they took the lead after 11 minutes, Nyren Clunis rising highest to head a rebound home.

Shaun Lucien smashed the ball past Paul Idem in the Hamlet goal to level after 27 minutes and Boro took the lead on 63 minutes Boro when Jordan Berry’s shot looped over the helpless Idem. And Harrow got a third goal some three minutes into stoppage time when Marcel Barrington converted a low cross.

AFC Hornchurch defeated spirited Essex neighbours East Thurrock United 3-0 at Bridge Road. Two George Purcell strikes in as many minutes, 55 and 57, followed Chris Bourne’s 41st minute opener for the Urchins.

Two of the bottom three, Cray Wanderers and Carshalton Athletic, shared a goalless draw at Hayes Lane.

Canvey Island picked up their first home win of the season with a 2-1 success against Enfield Town in front of a bumper crowd of 461. The home side took the lead on 53 minutes when Town left-back Michael Bardle handled inside the area, and Ty Smith confidently converted the spot-kick. Winger Ashley Dumas hit the post for Canvey 15 minutes later with a curling cross from the left flank which beat keeper Noel Imber but struck the woodwork.

It was another shot onto the frame of the goal which helped double Canvey’s lead

on 74 minutes. Sheldon Sellears’ chipped effort from the edge of the box hit the crossbar, struck Imber on the back of the neck and trickled over the line.

Enfield responded well and reduced the deficit three minutes later when Jermaine Osei was on hand to shoot home from inside the box only a minute after coming on as a substitute.

Bognor Regis Town earned a good 2-1 success at New Lodge against relegated Billericay Town. Ben Godfrey gave the Rocks a 23rd minute lead that recent signing Joey Benjamin equalised in the 34th minute.

A draw looked likely until Terry Dodd pounced for Bognor’s winner in injury-time at the end of the game.

Hendon made the trek over to the Suffolk coast to take on Lowestoft Town and came back with a 3-2 win in front of another good attendance of 585. The Trawlerboys had a great start when Bradley Woods-Garness converted a first-minute penalty.

But Jack Bennett equalised just after the break and then Junior Morais gave the Greens a 56th minute lead. Rob Eagle levelled on 64 minutes, but Sam Flegg popped up with Hendon`s winner with three minutes to go.

There were just under 500 at Hartsdown Park where Margate and Leiston shared the points in a 1-1 draw. Craig Parker gave the visitors a 21st minute lead that Phil Walsh cancelled out with six minutes of the first half remaining.

REMEMBERING 9/11

It’s twelve years ago to the very day that the world was turned upside down forever by one of the worst terrorist attacks in history.

The events of that day in 2001 has joined the list of historical dates where people are ask “where were you?” to a list that includes the JFK assassination, the day England won the World Cup, Neil Armstrong being the first man on the moon, the day that Princess Diana died. It’s a day that the Mead’s Commercial and Marketing man Mike Green will never forget and, wouldn’t you know it, its got something to do with our great game! He tells us his story in today’s feature interview.

September 2001 was ticked in the Greenie diary as the time for my main holiday of the year having been lucky enough, with a couple of golfing pals, to get season tickets for the Ryder Cup, due to be held at the Belfry.

We were especially pleased with ourselves because we’d been able to find a Travelodge just twentyminutes from the course that had a room!

In those days I was enjoying working in the city for a major Canadian bank during the week and, at weekends (and most Tuesdays), I was reporting for BBC Radio Kent’s sports show at various non-league grounds around

the country.

Tuesday 11th September 2001 had begun early with a trip to the radio station office in Chatham to collect a broadcasting kit for a game in the Football Conference that I was to cover that evening, following Chris Kinnear’s Margate team to Kingfield to play Woking who, at the time, were (if memory serves) towards the top of the table.

It was at lunchtime when things began to happen and the day, and for that matter the World, would change forever! I was in the middle of doing my pre-match prep and research when someone in the office said that there’d been an accident or something in New York.

Now, bearing in mind that the time difference was five hours, it was around 2pm in the afternoon as things in the office began to get very crazy indeed.

I’ll never forget one of the guys on the bank of desks behind mine suddenly shouting out, “oh f***ing hell!” Now this guy never usually said boo to a ghost - in five years of working with him (other than that September afternoon) I don’t ever recall him swearing, let alone at the top of his voice in a packed office.

I wonder how many other offices were like ours over the next couple of hours - a growing fascination (and frustration) with the CNN website who had pictures of the first plane hitting

the north tower, and an ever increasing sense of uneasiness as to whether or not something equally horrific was being planned here. After all, there was the NatWest Tower (as it was called then) and, of course, Canary Wharf.

Admitedly, it was barely half the size of the World Trade Center but, after all, fifty floors is still fifty floors! It was frustrating because the website kept crashing such was the massive and morbid curiosity of the world!

That uneasiness kept growing during the afternoon until the boss was called to the boardroom for a meeting. It only lasted ninety seconds and as he reappeared he told the team that we were all to go home and see what happens.

Now I really was in limbo - was the evening football still going to be on or was that going to be called off? Knowing my luck, I bet myself it would be called off whilst I was on the fast train from Waterloo to Woking where I couldn’t just get off and head home. Then I started to wonder what if something did happen and I got stuck in Surrey?!

It was then that I got the call from the radio station with the news that one of the Margate players - a young, Canadian centre-half named Ross Smith (who later went onto play in the Football League and in the States after beating a heat defect which nearly caused an early retirement) -

THE FEATURE INTERVIEW

REMEMBERING 9/11

had a relative who was in one of the adjoining buildings to the WTC and would I interview him after the game?

I didnt know what to say - what could I possibly say to Ross? After playing ninety minutes of football, the last person that he’d want to talk to on this particular evening would be me!

The evening did carry on as planned, if only with a very truncated show on the radio (I think we were shoved onto AM) but, to be fair, I didn’t care and I don’t think many other people did either.

All I could think of was the image of that first plane flying straight into the side of what, after all, was an office building like hundreds I saw and walked past every single day - albeit not quite so tall!

I’d been to Kingfield a couple of times before and there had always been a great atmosphere about the place. This

night, the whole place summed up the feelings of the country.

It was almost as though we were all going through the motions with very little interest in what was happening in front of us. The only word that I can really use for the atmosphere was eerie!

The game itself? No idea what happened except that Margate lost as, with everything else that had gone on in the world, this really was the day when football didn’t matter one jot!

And then all I had to do was to speak to a young man who didn’t know whether or not a relative was alive or dead on the other side of the Atlantic!

How can you ask someone who is out of their mind with worry about a game of football?

To be fair, Ross was an absolute gentleman as we sat there on our own

in the stand and that night formed a friendship that I’m delighted to say is still in tact today.

But, that night, we just sat there, and it was undoubtedly the worst interview that I’ve ever been involved with. Unlike any other one, I simply had no idea on what the first question would be!

But, you know something? As I sat there that night and, again, as I sit here writing this all these years later, it didn’t matter and still doesn’t!

The images of that September New York morning will, I’m sure, live with all of us who saw them for the rest of our lives.

2,996 people lost their lives that New York morning, and that somehow puts losing a ninety minute game of Association Football into context, don’t you think?

MATCH REPORT:

ACTION REPLAY

Scott Shulton scored an 83rd minute winner for Wingate & Finchley on Saturday afternoon as the ten men snatched the win at Bayliss Avenue.

Leon Smith had an early shot blocked and Wingate were gifted the lead after a quarter of an hour, as George Wilson left a back pass short and Smith pounced to round Rob Budd and roll the ball into the net.

Jack Hopkins was getting balls into the box for the Mead, but nothing was coming from them, before Dean Mason went on a good run for Wingate only to see his shot held by Budd.

A Hopkins corner was missed by the Wingate keeper but the visitors cleared, only for Mason to then find himself clear again, before his shot was denied again by Budd.

Smith then headed a corner over for Wingate, and Michael Power sent a free kick over the bar for the Mead.

Jay Porter came to the Mead’s rescue shortly afterwards as he halted Smith as he looked to drive forward for the visitors.

Power and Theo Fairweather-Johnson fired over for Mead as Keith McMahon’s side pressed for level terms, before the equaliser eventually arrived.

With Wingate trying to resist the Mead’s advances, Sean Roberts released Danny Phillips through on goal and he squeezed his shot past the visiting keeper and into the net. Into the second half, and Fairweather-Johson fired wide, before Smith wriggled clear and also watched a shot slide just wide. Then a ball pinged around the Mead box before breaking to Daniel McGonigle and Rob Budd parried his effort over. McGonigle then sent a shot wide before the Wingate skipper was booked.

Lewis Tozer glanced a free kick wide for the Mead and then Wingate broke, but Budd got out to deny Shulton.

Marc Weatherstone received his

marching orders for Wingate with twenty minutes to go as he collected a second yellow card, presenting the Mead with an opportunity to go on and seal all three points.

Rob Carter had a shot blocked for the Mead as they probed, but it was the ten men of Wingate who grabbed a winning goal.

The away side broke and worked the ball to Shulton, who then cut inside to curl a fine shot wide of Rob Budd and into the corner of the net with only seven minutes to go.

The Mead were struggling to carve out any real clear-cut chances, and in added time Leon Smith broke clear again for Wingate only to see his poked effort edge just wide.

After a delayed start and then six minutes of injury time, it was Wingate who celebrated at the end.

THE YOUTH TEAM

Thamesmead Youth teams have started the season on top form, with the Ryman Youth joint top of their league and the Kent Youth U18s and U16s both top of their respective divisions, having won their opening matches.

The U18s dominated their match for the first 30 minutes before Danny Patterson made the breakthrough with a 25-yard shot curling away from the keeper’s left hand. Erith & Belvedere fought back, threatening to score on a few occasions, but Thamesmead held on to the 1-0 lead until half-time.

Ten minutes into the second half we conceded a sloppy goal, which turned out to be the wake-up call needed by the team. We were given a penalty when Adem Ramadan’s goal-bound shot was blocked by an opposing player’s hand, and Adem made good on the chance, putting us 2-1 ahead with a swift shot past the keeper.

Five minutes later, good work down the left side fed Ainsley Everett a cross on the edge of the opposition box, which he shot home. Ibrahim Bangura’s hard work and determination finally put the game beyond Erith & Belvedere when he scored the fourth goal.

Well done on an excellent team performance, and congratulations to the man of the match, David Mullarkey.

The Kent Youth U16s were at home last Sunday, welcoming VCD from the North Division, and it started at a fierce pace from the home team - within

the first few minutes, the Mead striker was through on goal with just the goalkeeper to beat. He went past him only to be brought down in the area. Unfortunately, the referee waved away our penalty claims.

The tone was set for the rest of the game, though - the Mead playing on the offensive and at pace, with VCD subject to wave upon wave of attacks. The inevitable goal came after a superb pass from James Sutherland to Jack Keaveney, who sprinted the ball past the defence and round the keeper to make it 1-0.

The Mead then upped their pace even more, putting pressure on the VCD back four and forcing an illegal tackle on George Delle Valle in the penalty area, which the referee did see and award as a penalty. George picked himself up, took the shot and scored.

The Mead kept probing down both flanks looking for the decisive pass to open up VCD. Following an attack by the opposition, the Mead goalkeeper threw the ball out to James Sutherland on the right. James then links up with his team to cut through the VCD team and find Jake Try on the edge of the penalty area, who calmly steps inside the defence to curl a shot into the bottom corner of the goal - a superb finish for 3-0 at half-time.

Just one change of line-up for the second half as Brazilian winger Cisco is brought on. He gets straight onto the ball and immediately attacks the VCD defence. They back off, allowing him

to cut inside on his less favoured foot. Cisco curls in a superb strike from 25 yards into the top corner giving their keeper no chance for 4-0.

The Mead are now in cruise control, carrying on from where they left off in the first half and attacking VCD at every opportunity. A chaotic VCD defence couldn’t cope with a high shot into the box, letting James Keaveney get the ball and put it away again to make the score 5-0.

VCD then took a rare opportunity to get the ball into the Mead’s box from a free kick. The kick is taken, there is a scramble as the ball is cleared, but to everyone’s surprise the ref has blown the whistle for a penalty. George Martin steps up to take it for VCD. It looks like Scott Harris has saved it, but it just creeps over the line before he can pull it back to make the score 5-1.

This doesn’t dampen the Mead’s spirit, and they push on. Jack Keaveney steps up to take another penalty, and scores his hat-trick - well deserved. The score on the final whistle is 6-1 to the Mead.

The Ryman Youth Team will be back in action on Thursday 12th September at Bayliss Avenue for a 7.30pm kick-off against Holmesdale. Your support would be most welcome.

The U13s and U14s both start their season at home this Saturday 14th. Come along to Bayliss Avenue and give them a cheer.

COMMERCIALCORNER

Good evening everyone, and welcome to Wednesday night football at Sporting Club Thamesmead!

First off, a big thank you to both secretaries and managers for agreeing to swap this fixture from last night allowing us all the chance to watch England’s game in Kiev. Having written these notes well before kick-off in Ukraine, here’s hoping that by the time you read them Roy and the boys will still be masters of their own destiny in the race for Brazil 2014. Time is something that we’re very conscious of here in the commercial office, and I’m pleased to say that some of the plans we’ve been working on over the course of the last few months can now (at last!) begin to be rolled out.

That began last Saturday when we announced details of the very first TTFC Sportsman’s Dinner with guests to be former Premiership referee, Dermot Gallagher, and top comedian, Adger Brown.

To book your place (tickets are just £35 each which includes a meal and a memorabilia auction at the end of the evening) simply see me at any match day or give me a call on the commercial number 07845 751319. That’s the same number if you’d like to sponsor either a forthcoming home game or one of Keith’s first team squad. Sadly again, this evening we don’t have a match sponsor, but if you’d like to get involved please get in touch asap. Whilst we remember our next home game is of course this coming Saturday when we start the road to Wembley when we entertain Redhill from Ryman South here at the SCT with a 3pm kick-off. And just a reminder that, under FA regulations, no alcohol may be consumed in sight of the pitch outside of the bar. Finally tonight from me, I sincerely hope that our friends at the SCT have been able to sort out the problems that we’ve been having with the stadium tannoy. One of the delights of something new - its either too loud or doesn’t work!

Please bare with us, but should it not be working this evening then team sheets will be posted in the Mead Lounge and on the door of the committee room. Good luck to Keith and the boys tonight and see you Saturday for the start of our road to Wembley! Cheers,Greenie

REDHILLThe journey to Wembley begins in earnest for the Mead this weekend as they entertain Ryman South outfit, Redhill, in the FA Cup First Qualifying Round.

Redhill, who currently lie fifteenth in their table one level below the Mead, will arrive at Sporting Club Thamesmead on Saturday afternoon full of optimism for a game that they will feel they have every chance of progressing from.

The side won promotion from the Sussex County League last season when they finished second, and they have made a solid, if unspectacular, start to life in their new territory, collecting eight points from their opening seven fixtures.

All three of their defeats so far this season have only been by the odd goal, and Michael Maher’s side have scored in every one of their fixtures, scoring thirteen times in eight games.

Speaking to the club’s website after

a local derby draw with Merstham, Maher said: “One thing I know my players will never lack is the right attitude.

“They will always know they have to earn the right to play and also create their own luck.

“If we show that kind of resolve and determination we will be a match for any side.”

The Lobsters beat Cray Valley in 2-0 in their previous qualifying round to set up the tie with the Mead on Saturday, thanks to goals from Gavin Gordon and Chris Gregson, who sealed the victory in the closing stages.

Redhill were in action most recently last night as they took on Faversham Town, and all sights will now be on Saturday’s encounter for the Surrey-based side.
