"Thai" means free, and therefore the meaning of Thailand is the "land of the free". Throughout the country's 800-year history, Thailand is the only country in Southeast Asia that have never been colonized. Formerly known as "Siam" but later on May 11, 1949, the country's name was changed to "Thailand" which it has since come to be known all around the world.

By the 13th century the Thais had settled down within the Southeast Asian mainland with Sukhothai as the "first kingdom". Under King Ramkhamhaeng the Great, the land of Sukhothai was thriving which is regarded as a "golden age" in Thai history. Then in the 1350, a new dynasty led by King Ramathaibodi established a new capital at Ayutthaya. Following the defeat of the Burmese attack, King Taksin retreated to the south and established a new capital at Thonburi. After his death in 1782, the King was succeeded by King Phra Buddha Yodfah Chulaloke, who moved the capital to the present location in Bangkok due to the vulnerability of Thonburi to Burmese attack. The king founded the dynasty called Chakri dynasty which rules Thailand to the present day.

Thais are very proud of their country, very loyal to their King and for the most part, strong believers in the Buddhist value system; meaning that all humans are equal.
