I’m Jessica, the founder of Teach English: ESL, and helping people like you change your life for the better is the best part of

what I do. I have personal experience traveling solo around much of the world and, most importantly, teaching English in

Thailand and China. As a result, I’ve handpicked every program represented on Teach English: ESL, including the one that

caught your eye (and our most popular one!) in Thailand.

You're now one step closer to achieving your dream of living abroad in Thailand, immersing yourself in Thai culture, making a positive impact and finding your purpose. I've witnessed people

grow in so many ways as a result of this program, be it overcoming a fear of public speaking, significantly reducing

stress, anxiety or depression, becoming stronger communicators and educators, or simply better world travelers

and/or permanent nomads. But you can't know how it will change your life until you take

the leap and dive in. See you on the other side!

►PERSONAL NOTE

3

►FEELING NERVOUS?The Kingdom of Thailand has its own

unique language, culture and environment that in many ways is quite different from what you are

used to in a Western country. However, by immersing ourselves in new countries, and by experiencing new ways of doing things, we grow

not only professionally, but personally as well.

Thailand is a great place to start this journey as you will find it is very easy

to get around and the people are very friendly.

Thailand is a glorious place; follow our handy tips to help you prepare! 4

►CLIMATE

Thailand is hot. Really hot. Even in the more temperate Northern regions, it ranges from kinda hot to walking-on-the-surface-of-the-sun-hot. It is also really humid. You’ll get used to it, though! We promise.

Every region has its own variations for these basic seasons, but here is a summary based on weather averages for the country from weatherbase.com.

TIPS

5

►EATING IN THAILAND

Thai cuisine is famous for being exotic and tasty, as well as for

its balance of four fundamental flavors in each dish or overall

meal: spicy, sour, sweet and salty.

Thai food is also known for its enthusiastic use of fresh

vegetables, herbs, and spices. The different flavors harmonize

to make each dish mouth-wateringly delicious.

7

►GETTING AROUND

Thai riders and drivers have a uniquely pragmatic view of road rules, which, from the outside, can seem reckless. It works for them, though. Every Thai commuter and pedestrian instinctively knows the exceptions to the rules, but as foreigners it will take some time to adjust, so be cautious when using the road. Public transport can also seem complex, but becomes easy to navigate with experience.

9

►WHAT TO WEARIn Thailand, people dress

conservatively, especially in Bangkok. Cleanliness and neatness

are highly prized. In spite of the heat, most Thais don’t wear short-shorts

or sleeveless tops in places other than beaches or at swimming pools. It’s appropriate that you have some

conservative clothing to wear in public. Shorts should be knee length

and shirts should not be low-cut. You can find clothing at prices far

below those of Western countries. Lightweight, ready-made skirts, for

example, go for about 200 Baht (around $6 USD).

10

►PERSONAL SAFETY

Thailand is much safer than many Western countries and violent crime against tourists is virtually unheard of.

That being said, be vigilant at all times as you would in any country.

11

USEFUL PHRASES

12

►TRAVEL PREP

Changing countries and careers can be stressful, so we have put

together a brief guide to help you with the transition.

We have information on the visa arrangements, tips on what to

bring, and a travel checklist!

We’re here to cut down on the stress of travel.

13

►WHICH VISA?It's best to enter on either a Non-immigrant visa prior to arrival or on a Single or Multiple Entry Tourist Visa from a Royal Thai Embassy or consulate to give you adequate stay in Thailand to undergo the training and placement process.

Depending on your education status and how much time there is between registration and departure, we will work with you to guide you down the best path.

After you're placed in a school in Thailand, our partners will help you secure a Non-immigrant visa (if you don't have one already) and a work permit, which may cost extra.14

►WHERE WILL YOU LIVE AND TEACH?

Our partners work with a variety of public, private and

international schools all around Thailand and you will be placed wherever there is a need at the

time of graduation. The age range is preschool through high

school and placement usually occurs within a week of

successful course completion.

Placement preferences are taken into consideration but not

guaranteed. However, it's just as much in our interest as yours to

make sure you're happy!15

►HOW MUCH MONEY SHOULD YOU BRING?The amount of money you need to get

through the 3-week training course and a month of employment depends

greatly on your personal spending habits. We ask that you bring or have

access to 40,000-50,000 Baht (approx. $1,400 USD).

During your training, your expenses will be food, laundry, shopping, local transportation, communication,

entertainment and perhaps travel during your free weekends and holidays.

Teaching location set-up costs will be transportation to your school, rental

deposit, rent, and daily living expenses.16

Your TEFL course will take you through 25 units. Each unit has been carefully selected to offer you the most relevant and useful teaching methods.

Our staff has extensive experience in the EFL field, and will give you all the practical tools you need in order to start your career as a foreign language teacher. Whether it is practical insight into what works and what doesn’t in the classroom, or the latest theories from applied linguistics, this award-winning TEFL training sets the standard in the industry.

This course is designed to be a fun and interactive experience; however,

we ask that you come ready to learn. Give us three weeks to

turn you into a rockstar teacher! You will have homework on

weekdays, but your weekends are mostly free, other than for guided excursions. You will be

expected to apply yourself, make an effort to participate in all

activities, and to complete all required tasks and phases of the

course.Be open minded and humble to a

new culture and be a good representative of Teach English: ESL.

►TEACHING STUFF

Teaching is not only fun and rewarding, but teachers in Thailand are especially

respected and revered. Being a teacher is a position of authority and should be

treated with care and consideration.

Thailand may have an international reputation for its laidback and happy culture, but it’s still important to act, dress and speak like a professional.

The golden rule? Be fun, cool, calm, and respectful.

27

►DRESS FOR SUCCESS

School officials expect foreign teachers to appreciate the importance of their position and to take pride in their appearance.

Most female teachers wear knee-length skirts with modest short-sleeve blouses and flats or heels.

Most male teachers wear slacks with dress shoes and a short-sleeve button-up shirt. A tie is optional. Thai teachers often have almost military

style uniforms to denote the importance of their position.

TEACHING STUFF

28

►WORK HOURS

A typical teaching load is 16-22 hours of classes per week, depending on the

school.

In addition to the actual time spent in the classroom, teachers are expected

to devote time to lesson planning, faculty meetings, and extracurricular

activities.

Teachers should assume a 35-40hr work week.
