Why adopt a school, youmay say, its simple, in com-

bining forces of THA hotelsand resorts with local schools, the Tessban have chosen 10schools for the initial 2009project with 15 more to belooked at for the 2010 cal-endar year.

Combining our efforts to edu-cate the children of koh samuiin the three R,s as well aseducating their parents onthe importance of not throw-ing garbage away, but recy-

    cling what can be used.

Two hotels will work on one

school, for this project, brother one and brother 2,brother two will take a newschool next year, and brotherone will help them along.

Certain areas of the schoolswould be handed over togarage separation areas, Emproduction, small gardens forherbs spices and flowers.

Helping the schools to be selfsufficient and educating the

children to take care of theirIsland and their country.

Once these projects are setup in the next few months, acontinuation would then hap-pen and the children willreap the benefits by thethree R,s and assiatcne formthe Tessban to help them selltheir garbage.

More on this in the next issueof the Green post:

set up this project, due tohaving 10 schools under one

banner it was decided toshow all ten schools underone roof, a grand openingfrom 8:00am until 12 noon.

All schools will be there toshow what they are doing,we expect GIDOA, samuirescue, Samui dogs home,

A lot of work to be done to

local dignitaries along withthe police, local and tourist,

Major beach clean up - 25th April 2009to all the families of the fish-erman that live/work here. All kinds of refuse was found, but in the main plastic andglass. But, also old tires, signs, lumps of wood and adoor from a speedboat toilet

or cupboard, which was obvi-ously no longer needed! Some speedboat oil filterswere even found buried inthe sand where they hadbeen changed but couldnt be

disposed of properly! The diligent group thenheaded down Big BuddhaBeach clearing the refusefrom the recent high tideswhich had left a constantstream of litter and debris.

Many of the resorts along thisbeach do clean their beachland which was noticeable, area of rubbish left.

Our last beach clean up on25th April was another greatsuccess. We had an amazing turnoutof 165 people who all madethe effort to meet at 8.30amat Seatran Pier. This was

made up of from 14 Resortsand 11 Dive/Snorkel Opera-tors.We began cleaning underthe pier which was the worseaffected area, possibly due

Check dams, tree planting, flood drains, beach clean upsand support for the variousorganizations on koh samui isgrowing from strength tostrength from the Tessban,

They will establish a first onSamui their own recycling

    centre right at their doors

step, the yard of the Tessa-ban office in Nathron.

This will be looked at as apilot project, to show thecommunity they mean busi-ness and that anyone cantake their garbage to besorted out there, they wantto show the community theymust lead and show by ex-ample before they can askthe community to follow thesame practice, a worth whileendeavor to keep koh samuiGreen and mean for the

    years to come.

It wont be easy, but they

must start at the source of thematter, the local Govern-ment .

Five holding pens have beenset up still to have their roofsadded.

Every step they take in goingGreenbrings them closer tothe objective of the GreenIsland project.

    corals, or any other kinds

Amount of certain types of Ma-rine life that indicate thehealthiness of the reef

Causes of any damage to thereef: nets, fishing gear, spearfishing, diving, shell collecting,stepping/holding on corals, oilslick, anchor on coral, sediment,

    sewage Visibility, temperature of water

and sea flow.We also use color charts to establishcoral healthiness.

The survey on Chaweng reef showedthat the majority of the reef is madeup of live hard coral which are in afairly good condition.Although not in big numbers, the reeffish that were there indicated thatthere is plenty of life on the reef forthem to stay. One thing that was very obvious wasthat most of the damage was causedby extensive sediment covering thereef, and there were also signs ofdamage caused by people steppingor holding onto the reef.

    Reef Watch May 2009

GIDOA members recently did a Reef Survey onChaweng Reef to monitor the condition of thecoral and the amount of marine life. We did thesurvey using the Green Fins Reef Watch projectguidelines. We were looking at:

    Reef type:

whether it is dense coral, patchy or arocky reef.

The Percentage cover of live hardcoral, dead coral rock, soft coral orsea fan

    Coral types: boulder corals, branching
