PLM Professional Education Principles
• Actions (activities) carried out by people and IT systems in product life
• Activities are person-specific dynamic or automated instantiation (IT activities) of the process
• Virtual and physical artefacts As well as models (data and information models)
• Are generated or manipulated in the product life cycle by activities
• Assisting-, Management- and core process
• Organization (roles and responsibilities)
• Processes: who (role) should do what, which tools are used, and which results are expected
• Information technology andphysical tools
• The IT infrastructure includes application systems and operating resources (hardware and software)

The Fraunhofer
Certification Authority
2014/2015: Development of Certification Profile „PLM
Professional“
• Fraunhofer Certification Authority supported by Board of
Experts in the field of „Project Lifecycle Management“ (PLM)
• Board of PLM Experts recruited from science, education and
industry
2015: First Certification Examination
Certification process compliant with ISO 17024
Currently examinations conducted semiannual
(May & November)
The Mission
PLM expertise requires an education guideline
Certification requires independence
Education requires harmonization and
orientation
Acceptance requires transparency
Competition requires comparability
Required Knowledge and Practices
Certification Guidelines identify three categories of
expertise that subsum knowledge and capabilities of a
PLM Professional:
1. The Value-Addeed Chain, i.e. technical processes of product
planning, product creation, production planning, manufacturing,
logistics, maintenance & overhaul, etc.,
2. Information Technology, i.e. software development, data
modelling, IT architectures, product business supporting IT
systems and their functionality, etc.; and
3. Their Integration, organization of business process and
application of information technology to optimize the value-added
chain including all matters to transfer the organisation into this new
state.
Major duty of a PLM Professional is considered to reside within
the field of integration
