In October, we show our leadership skills. We use the caring habits, SENTRAL, to achieve our desired future. We support, encourage, negotiate differences, trust, respect, accept, and listen.

This month, we invite our families to share a positive quote to promote the daily use of our caring habits and we’ll display them in our Virtues Tree. Please hand this in to the family coordinators on Tuesday, October 16th.

En octubre evidenciamos nuestras habilidades de liderazgo. Usamos los hábitos constructivos, C.R.E.A., para lograr nuestro futuro deseado. Así, confiamos, conciliamos, respetamos, escuchamos, aceptamos, apoyamos y animamos.

Este mes, los invitamos a compartir con los demás una frase positiva donde promovamos el uso de los hábitos constructivos para desplegar en el Árbol de las Virtudes. Los coordinadores de familia estarán recogiendo esta frase el día martes 16 de octubre.

One of our goals is for our students to be managers of their desired futures, therefore since they're in Prekindergarten, students lead their learning presentations. During the first years they have their teacher's support so, when they're in High School, they are able to do it in an autonomous way. At the end of their presentations, students self-evaluate taking into account our three pillars: healthy and sustainable environment, useful learning for life and the world, and internal responsibility towards success and happiness. We are looking forward to have all our families next October 19th and 20th during the students' learning presentations. Greetings.

Una de nuestras metas es que nuestros estudiantes sean gestores de sus futuros deseados y por ello, desde que están en prejardín, los estudiantes lideran sus presentaciones de aprendizaje. Durante los primeros años ellos cuentan con el apoyo de los docentes, hasta que son capaces de realizarlo de manera autónoma cuando llegan a bachillerato. Al finalizar su presentación, se autoevalúan teniendo en cuenta nuestros tres pilares: ambiente saludable y sostenible, aprendizaje útil para la vida y el mundo y responsabilidad interior frente a la felicidad y el éxito. We extend our congratulations to the students from 6th to 11th grade that were selected to participate in the two week academic programs in the universities of Stanford and Yale. Our students are going to have the opportunity to experience university life in programs such as science, technology, engineering, medicine, social studies and humanities. ¡We are very proud!

Queremos extender nuestra felicitación a los estudiantes de 5º a 10º grado que fueron seleccionados para asistir a los programas académicos por dos semanas en las universidades de Stanford y Yale. Nuestros estudiantes van a tener la oportunidad de experimentar la vida universitaria en programas de ciencia, tecnología, ingeniería, medicina, ciencias sociales y humanidades. ¡Nos sentimos muy orgullosos!

As part of our curricular work and graduation requirements for 12th graders, our seniors do internships to better understand their life project, in order to make more informed decisions about their professional future. We invite you to be part of this initiative by registering your companies with Hernán Varón, Principals Assistant, (hvaron@rochester.edu.co). Internships are will take place on January the 9th, the 10th and the 11th of 2019. To find out more information, please read the attached PDF form.

We feel honored to have been the hosts of a wonderful and touching music concert, performed by “Voz por Vos” musical ensemble, under the direction of Daniel Lozano. In addition to being the recipients of the Creation and Research scholarship given by the Ministry of Culture,. They performed six coral songs for 4th and 5th graders. We thank Fanor Martínez, our Arts Coordinator, for his marvelous initiative. We invite you to watch their performance here!

Our students are learning specific vocabulary related to our project “The Human Machine”. They can identify the words: grains, fruits, vegetables, proteins, dairy and water. The students also name some parts of the digestive system and their functions. It has been a very exiting experience for all!

Nuestros estudiantes están aprendiendo vocabulario especifico relacionado con nuestro proyecto integrado “La Máquina Humana”. Pueden identificar las palabras: granos, frutas, vegetales, proteínas, diario y agua. Los estudiantes también nombran algunas partes del sistema digestivo y sus funciones. !Ha sido una experiencia muy emocionante para todos!

Dear parents:

We want to tell you the work we have been doing with the students in our shared classrooms. This year, we have Claudia Moreno and Sandra Steibler as teachers of the shared classrooms for Preschool and Kinder. The purpose is to have a space where students can strengthen their class work and self evaluation skills. Additionally, in the shared classrooms, students are learning to do activities that strengthen specific roles in a fun way.

Queremos compartir con ustedes el trabajo que hemos venido realizando con los estudiantes en nuestras aulas compartidas. Este año, contamos con Claudia Moreno y Sandra Steibler como profesoras de las aulas compartidas de Prejardín y Jardín. El propósito es brindar un espacio de apoyo para los estudiantes donde puedan fortalecer sus trabajos de clase y sus herramientas de autoevaluación. Adicionalmente, en las aulas compartidas los estudiantes están aprendiendo a desarrollar actividades que requieren el fortalecimiento de roles específicos de una manera divertida.

In Rochester School we encourage our students to be physically, mentally and spiritually healthy. We want to take this opportunity to share with you what we have been working on in our religion class.

Second grade students are working on a wonderful topic that encloses God’s gifts to humanity and the responsible use of them. We have observed our personal and natural environment in order to take care of it so we can learn to appreciate every day as a gift. Children wrote texts and messages with drawings encouraging others to appreciate and value, the gifts that God gave us with his infinite love.

En el colegio Rochester apoyamos a nuestros estudiantes para que sean saludables física, mental y espiritualmente. En esta oportunidad queremos compartir con ustedes lo que han estado trabajando nuestros estudiantes en la clase de Religión.

Los estudiantes de primer grado trabajan un tema maravilloso que encierra los regalos dispuestos por Dios a la humanidad y el uso responsable de los mismos. Hemos observado nuestro entorno personal y natural para darle un manejo adecuado y así aprender a apreciar cada día como un regalo. Los niños escribieron textos para enseñar a otros a cuidar su vida y el mundo. Cada estudiante escribió un mensaje con dibujos para enseñar a otros a apreciar y valorar los regalos que Dios con su amor infinito nos ha concedido.

"Who packs your parachute?” is the integrated project that the 5th grade students have been working on during this period. They have created a character where they have recognized the value of peoples work specially the ones that work for us and with us daily. Students conducted a series of interviews with School workers where they learned about their daily lives, their families, and their life experiences. Finally, they showed this graphically on a poster that will be displayed in the shared area.

“¿Quién empaca tu paracaídas?” es el proyecto integrado en que los alumnos de 4º grado han venido trabajando en este periodo. En este, han creado un personaje donde han ido reconociendo el valor del trabajo de las personas que de una u otra manera nos han servido diariamente a través de sus valiosas labores. Los alumnos realizaron una serie de entrevistas a trabajadores del Colegio donde conocieron acerca de su vida diaria, sus familias y sus vivencias. Al final mostraron esto de forma gráfica en un afiche que será exhibido en el área compartida.

INTEGRATED PROJECT 5TH GRADEPROYECTO INTEGRADO 4º GRADO

Our project for this year is called “Harvesting Virtues”. During the past weeks, we have been working on the importance of several virtues such as: honesty, integrity, self-discipline, and responsibility. In groups, students have discussed these virtues, have

watched videos and worked on case studies, reflecting on possible behaviors in different situations in which integrity and honesty are at stake. They will use what they have learned in a project which will integrate these virtues with our work at the orchard.

Nuestro proyecto de virtudes de este año escolar se llama “Cosechando Virtudes”. Durante estas últimas semanas hemos estado trabajando sobre la importancia de varias virtudes tales como honestidad, integridad, autodisciplina y responsabilidad. En grupos, los estudiantes han discutido sobre las virtudes, han visto videos y trabajado en estudio de casos, enfocándose en los comportamientos posibles en diferentes situaciones donde la integridad y la honestidad están en juego. Los estudiantes usarán todo lo aprendido en un proyecto que integrará las virtudes con el trabajo en la huerta.

This week, in English class, students had a chance to show their creativity through narratives. Following the writing process, they were able to brainstorm ideas in pairs and write collaboratively to create short stories and some scripts. Each group got their best ideas together and created some truly awesome stories! Some even gave it a creative twist by creating a trailer, or another illustration method. This shows us that writing doesn’t have to be a hard task, it can be fun for everyone!

Esta semana, en la clase de inglés, los estudiantes tuvieron la oportunidad de mostrar su creatividad a través del uso de narrativas. Tras el proceso de escritura, pudieron hacer una lluvia de ideas en parejas y escribir en colaboración para crear cuentos cortos y algunos guiones. ¡Cada grupo reunió sus mejores ideas y creó historias realmente asombrosas! Algunos, incluso le dieron un toque creativo al crear un tráiler u otro método de ilustración. Esto nos muestra que escribir no tiene que ser una tarea complicada, ¡es divertido para todos!

On October 16th we will be welcoming four exchange students from Saint Patrick Catholic School in Norfolk Virginia, who will be with us for a month. During their time at Rochester School they will strengthen their Spanish skills and learn from our community and our culture. Part of their process of coming to Colombia was writing an essay that we would like to share with you.

El 16 de octubre daremos la bienvenida a cuatro estudiantes de intercambio del Colegio Católico Saint Patrick en Norfolk, Virginia, quienes nos acompañarán durante un mes. Durante su estadía en el Rochester, fortalecerán sus habilidades en español y aprenderán de nuestra comunidad y nuestra cultura. Parte de su proceso de venir a Colombia incluyó la redacción de ensayo que nos gustaría compartir con ustedes.

We feel very fortunate to have started our internal volleyball tournament as we have been able to evidence the use of all our virtues as well as growing as a community. Students have dedicated the recess par t of their lunch to participate in this initiative that fosters their Integral Health.

The consumption of illegal substances (alcohol and other psychoactive substances) by students in parties at home or anywhere else is prohibited by law, goes against our code of ethics, and inhibit their learning and brain development process. We ask for your support with the compliance of these policies. Please verify that there is a responsible adult in the gatherings your children attend and spend time talking in family about what happens in these events.

Los Acuerdos de Diversión Sana fueron diseñados en conjunto para lograr futuros deseados y promover la salud mental y física de nuestras familias. Respetarlos, promoverlos y refinarlos es nuestra responsabilidad constante. El consumo de sustancias ilegales (alcohol y otras sustancias psicoactivas) por parte de algunos estudiantes está prohibido por ley, va en contra de nuestra Manual de Convivencia (Código de Ética) e inhibe su aprendizaje y desarrollo cerebral. Les solicitamos apoyar y promover el cumplimiento de estas políticas desde sus familias. This year the program for social and environmental service is based on the sustainabili ty projects of Rochester School. Students from 9th to 12th grade are invited to participate with

their work and commitment in the CASE, the Tití Foundation, conservation of Chingaza Park, protection of the Spectacled Bear and in the English program for Fusca. We hope, that by the end of the school year, High School students are able to show participation, improvement of the environment and solidarity. We also wish for 12th graders to accomplish these goals and obtain their certification in accordance with the requirements of the National Ministry of Education. We invite you to be actively part of these projects.

El servicio social y ambiental se basa en los propósitos de los proyectos de sostenibilidad del Colegio. Esperamos que los estudiantes de octavo a undécimo participen con su trabajo y compromiso en el CASE, apoyo a la Fundación Tití, conservación del Páramo de Chingaza y protección del Oso Andino y en el programa de Bilingüismo para Fusca. Deseamos que al finalizar el año escolar, los estudiantes de bachillerato hayan apropiado el sentido de los principios de participación, servicio, mejoramiento del ambiente y solidaridad. También se desea que los estudiantes de undécimo grado que hayan logrado las metas propuestas, obtengan su certificación conforme a las exigencias de la ley propuesta por el Ministerio de Educación Nacional. Aprovechamos para invitarlos a participar activamente de dichos proyectos.

We kindly ask you to remind your children to work on their self-evaluation.
