Grant’s Activity in 2018 If there was ever any doubt that we were well-served by our Executive Officer, Grant Sidaway, it was well put to rest when Grant reviewed the work that he had undertaken on the Federation’s behalf during 2018. The

record shows that he:

visited (and made presentations to) 31 individual

SeniorNet groups

attended 8 Regional Meetings

made presentations to 25 organisations (including Census 18, Manchester Unity, Deed Vault, Age

Concern and the Dept of Internal Affairs)

interviewed on 4 occasions by the press

and sought funding/sponsorship or partnership arrangements with more than 8 organisations (including Lotteries Commission, Westpac, Ryman

Healthcare, Noel Leeming)

We acknowledge the work the Grant undertakes on our

behalf.

Types of Social Media We are offering a Social Media Workshop on Wednesday afternoon, Friday 27th February. At this workshop we will be discussing the various types of Social Media and how to access them on your handheld devices and laptops, how to keep yourself safe when using them, and common abbreviations in use on Social Media. Here is a brief overview of some types of Social

Media:

Social Networking Using websites and applications to communicate informally with others, find people, and share similar interests. Can post photos and long text articles to a feed but these are only put in front of your audience for a short time. Allows users to directly connect with one

another through groups, networks, and location

Examples: Facebook, Google+, and LinkedIn

Microblogging Posting of very short entries or updates on a social networking site. Allows users to subscribe to other users' content, send direct messages, and reply publicly. Allows users to create and share hashtags to share content about related subjects. Very short ephemeral

messages.

Examples: Twitter and Tumblr

Blogging (Using Publishing Websites) Recording opinions, stories, articles, and links to other websites on a personal website – articles permanently &

publicly available

Examples: Wordpress and Blogger

Photo Sharing Publishing a user's digital photos, enabling the user to share photos with others either publicly or privately, but

essentially for a short time

Examples: Instagram, Flickr, Snapchat and Pinterest

Video Sharing Publishing a user's digital photos, enabling the user to share photos with others either publicly or privately. Content is searchable and available long term. Allows users to embed media in a blog or Facebook post, or

link media to a tweet

Examples: YouTube, Vimeo, and Periscope
