Dear Parents,

It has been a very traumatic few weeks at school and my first job must be to thank everyone who has helped us to cope with the aftermath of Ellie Phillip’s death. Ellie’s funeral is going to be after the Half Term break and we will contact everyone with more information about arrangements. Our love and prayers continue to go out to Ellie’s family - please remember them at this devastating time. Parents and pupils will also receive various contact details of agencies who can give support when school is closed.

On Sunday, we hosted the Gliddon and Squire Cross-Country League event and our course was suitably boggy - apparently the distinctive feature of the Shebbear leg. The Banbury sisters were once again on top form and it was great to see them winning their respective age groups. There must have been five hundred competitors and supporters enjoying our facilities, so many thanks to the organisers Mr Steel and Mrs Goode for enabling it to happen.

On Friday night there was also a great deal of running and excitement as the boarding community took part in their annual laser tag event. It made for a difficult evening dog walk as I was ambushed at nearly every part of the school by embarrassed children.

The first of two senior sporting tours took place at the weekend as our Senior Girls challenged both Kingswood and Bridgewater Academy. Kingswood are the oldest Methodist School in the world (I think we are the fourth oldest) and proved a tough challenge, but we did beat Bridgewater. The Senior Boys go to Gloucester after Half Term for their mini Rugby tour.

Once again we have been fortunate to take part in the Appledore Book festival and many thanks go to Mrs Welby for arranging two author visits. I managed to listen to Tanya Landman who is clearly a fantastic storyteller. I am sure the event will have inspired our children.

And so very quickly we reach Half Term. I wish you a relaxing break.Simon Weale

Gliddon and Squire Cross-CountryThe latest round of the league was held at Shebbear on Sunday. Harry, Freddie and Tom C all ran in the under 9 race and Freyja, Ben, Alfie, Maddie, Rosie, Millie and Joseph all ran in the under 11 races.

Many congratulations to all those who took part and a special mention must go to the sportsmanship shown by Thomas, as he stopped to help Freddie, who had fallen at the start, to see whether he was able to continue.

News from the Prep SchoolEvents in the Prep during this last busy week before the half-term break, have included a Year 6 trip to Morwellham, a visit to Okehampton Castle for Years 3 and 4, the latest pupil School Council meeting and an assembly taken by Rev Martin Warren from St. Michael’s Church in the village.

Last Friday also saw the first Chapel Run of the term for all of the Pre-School, Pre-Prep and Prep staff and children. They all joined together and ran or walked the course – some competing for their best time and others getting around at their own pace. This will now become a regular event, every Friday lunchtime.

Congratulations to James W, Tom N, Angus, Harvey, Jemima, Joseph, Freyja and Demelza for winning last week’s Golden Stickers and Bronze Awards have been presented to Tom N and Axel. Year 6 Visit Morwellham QuayAs part of their History studies on The Victorians, Year 6 recently visited Morwellham. Activities during the day included a lesson in a Victorian classroom, dressing up in Victorian clothes, a train ride into the copper mine and Victorian traditional rope making.

Swimming Successfor BethanMany congratulations to Bethan M, as she recently won four silver medals and a gold in a gala with Bude Swimming Club. Well done Bethan.

Year 1 and 2 Visit NumberlandLast Friday the sun shone and Pre-Prep enjoyed a

wonderful day out at Rosemoor exploring and solving puzzles in Numberland. The children had so much fun and we came home quite exhausted.

Under 9 Netball v St. Joseph’sOn Wednesday the 11th of October, the Under 9 netball team had a match at home, against St. Joseph’s. Sadly, two of our squad were missing and so we called in Lila-Mai from Year 2 to step up to the challenge of playing her first game. The majority of our girls had not played netball before the term started and so I was unbelievably proud of the way the team approached the match with enthusiasm and positivity. The first quarter was a rather tentative affair, but by the fourth, both these rather inexperienced teams had improved beyond recognition. The attacking combination of Jemima, Gracie and Lila-Mai will be one to watch in the future and indeed all the girls played with drive and energy. The match ended in a 0-0 draw, which was a wonderful result. Player of the match was the whole team!

Under 10 Rugby v St. Petroc’sAfter a very tough opening match away at St. Joseph’s, the under 10 boys showed what they were really capable of in their tight encounter with St. Petroc’s. Ferocious tackling and great running

rugby saw the boys an equal match for their opposition in both attack and defence. Billy broke five tackles to go in for a great try, Alfie showed good balance to score twice and Jack seized on a mistake to dive on a loose ball over the try line but uncertainty in the referee’s mind saw it disallowed. The final score saw us losing by the odd try. Having proven what they are capable of, the boys were keen to know when their next fixture is! Man of the match goes to Billy who was instrumental in most of Shebbear’s good work.

Under 10 Netball v St. Petroc’sShebbear hosted the St. Petroc’s Under 10’s netball team for a match on Thursday the 12th of October. This was a closely fought affair and the first time that this squad had played together. The effective combination of Bethan M, Ella and Freyja covering all areas of the court meant that St. Petroc’s were kept at bay and did not gain the majority of the possession. The St. Petroc’s girls were very nimble and Shebbear found them difficult to mark - something to work on for future games, but our girls worked hard to gain a narrow victory with the final score of 7-6. Player of the match as chosen by Mrs. Kirby, was Ellexia, for her improvement and enthusiasm.

Visit by Geoffrey Cox MPWe were pleased to welcome Mr Geoffrey Cox MP to the College a couple of weeks ago. In the College Upper school we are promoting an active, healthy political and social interest among our pupils. We continue to run a series of debates on topical issues, encouraging public speaking and developing self-confidence and some of our Sixth Form pupils organised a mock election at the time of the last General Election.

Mr Cox, our local MP, was able to visit at a busy time for him following the party conference season. Mr Cox spoke to our pupils, encouraging them to take a positive approach to politics and the need to be informed citizens. After the speech several pupils asked relevant and appropriate questions on topics including tuition fees, nuclear weapons, North Korea, the Prime Minister and cough sweets (after Mrs May’s recent speech). We thank Mr Cox for his time and patience, and also thank the Upper School pupils for their mature attitudes and behaviour.

A Report by Robert TempleThe upper school were privileged to have a visit from our local Conservative MP Geoffrey Cox. Mr Cox spoke to students about the importance of remaining engaged in politics in this uncertain time, asking for a show of hands how the pupils would have voted in the referendum now (overwhelmingly stay), as well as his own journey into politics. He then took questions from the audience about matters ranging from Trident to university fees, as well as the proportion of the budget that would be devoted to buying Theresa May some Strepsils. He remained behind after the talk, speaking to some individuals about their future career plans in politics or law. He also took the time to come and see our new Music Department and 6th Form Centre.

Thanks must go to Mr Cox for coming in, Mr Weale for communicating with him and Mr Rogers for overseeing the visit on the day.

National Boarding DayTo celebrate National Boarding Day, members of the boarding community took part in an International Cooking Competition.

The competition was strong, with dishes from Germany, Spain, Italy, Thailand, UK, Hong Kong and France. The Spanish contestants worked very hard to produce a variety of dishes, Mrs Aliberti’s contribution from Italy of a traditional Tiramisu went down very well and France’s Crepes proved very popular. The overall winner was

Spain and the runner up was France. It was lovely to see so many boarders come together and enjoy tasting the variety of foods which were on offer. We are planning another event next term.

Author Visit - Tanya LandmanWe were delighted to have a visit from the award winning author Tanya Landman to the college last week. Tanya lives locally but is acknowledged internationally as a superb writer of books for young people. Her book ‘Buffalo Soldier’ won the Carnegie Medal in 2015 and a number of her other titles have won awards too.

Tanya gave an entertaining and informative talk to all of the pupils in Forms 1, 2 and 3 which was followed by a question and answer session. There were so many interesting questions from the students that we ran out of time - but not before Tanya told us the answer to the intriguing statement on her website that she could make a tapir faint!

Jane Welby

Author Visit - Joffre WhiteWe were delighted to have renowned author Joffre White visit us for the day on Tuesday. His presentations and workshops on creative writing were both motivating and inspiring. He is passionate about reading and has highlighted the power of words, both for good and bad. Joffre is the author of books such as the ‘Frog’ series and ‘Earthland’ and a UK Patron of Reading.

Of his visit, the author stated “Thank you for such a great day; your students were a joy to work with. Please pass on my thanks to them and all of the staff involved, plus my sincere and grateful thanks to yourself for organising the day and keeping me going with water and cups of tea!

I hope that the impact reaps you benefits not only in promoting the library, but also that it helped the students to realize their own talents and strengths.”

Form 2 Geography and Biology Trip to Fingle Bridge WoodsA Report by Kieran Lewis Once we arrived at the deciduous woodland, we were split into four groups, two (groups three and four) went further upstream and the other two (groups one and two) stayed in the forest. Group two did work on quadrats, a square with a ten by ten grid in side it, they would put the quadrats on the ground and record what was in each square. Then the group started looking at tree identification. So they would walk around and look at the leaves on the trees and, with the help of a card, identified them.

In the next task we did tree height and girth. We used a tool that told us when we were looking at the top of the tree at a forty five degree angle. We then measured the distance from the person’s eyes to feet, then measured the distance between their feet and the tree. You add together the distance from person to tree to the distance between the feet and eyes and you get the total height of the tree. As the second part of the task, we put a measuring tape a metre off the ground around a tree and recorded the length which told us the girth.

Then after lunch, we headed off upstream where we looked at how wide the river was then took measurements every metre and recorded how high the water was on the metre ruler. We took these readings in three different parts of the river.

In the final part of the day we measured the velocity of the river. We were split into three groups of three, one group would go out into the river (upstream) with oranges, another group went downstream with nets to catch the oranges and the final group had stopwatches and recorded how long it took for the oranges to get to the nets further downstream.

A Report by Susannah PomroyOn Tuesday 3rd October, all of Year 8 went on a fun day out which provided a learning experience at the same time. We were split up into four groups and there were four activities. One of them was where you had to place quadrats and count how many of certain species there were. We also identified tress and leaves. Another thing we did was measuring tree length and width with metre rulers and trundle guns. To measure a tree’s height you had to point the trundle guns up at the highest part of the tree that you can see and pull down the trigger.

Also, we had a walk around the woods and came up past the bridge. Something we then did was go in the water and measure its depth and width. The best bit was where we had to see how fast an orange would flow down stream. Three people released the orange, three people timed how long it took to get to the catchers, two people wrote the results and three people caught the orange. It was the best bit because we got to go in the water (someone fell in and several got water over their boots!)

Boarders’ Laser Tag Excitement!Last Friday night saw around 50 boarders come together for a Laser Tag battle. Capture the flag was the first mission which ended in confusion as many could not see where the flag was in the darkness. The second game, our 2 resident Gap students helped some boarders to win, by hiding in the middle of the field in the dark. Only a few boarders saw them, but they were able to attack them before they could get too close! The final game was a battle of Asia v The rest of the World. Asia came out on top winning with 5 of the team avoiding getting hit. There was great fun, noise and excitement on site throughout the evening.

Rugby Reports1st XV v Exeter SchoolThe 1st XV rugby continued their successful season with an undefeated trip to Exeter School. They played Exeter School and Kings College Taunton second teams in 30min games and ran out comfortable winners, beating Exeter 31-0 with tries from Ollie Arden, Ted Trott, Sione Funaki and Will Cunningham, and then beat King’s College 60-0 with tries from Will Cowan-Dickie (3), Ollie Arden, Sione Funaki, Ted Trott (2), Siaosi Taufa, Will Cunningham and Jabez Weale. Along with not conceding a try, it was really pleasing that Shebbear have such strength in depth, with 22 players all getting a good run out, without any disruption to our attacking pattern and skill. Man of the match was Ryan Stairs.

Jamie Sanders

U13 v Plymouth CollegeThe U13s played Plymouth College last week and despite a promising start by the forwards who rucked and scrummaged well, the home side tackled well and our early domination was not converted into points.

Plymouth had a number of strong runners and they ran in four tries in the first half. A better second half performance saw the home side restricted to two more tries and a final score of 30-0.

U12 v Plymouth CollegeThe U12 rugby team travelled to Plymouth College for a midweek game and enjoyed a comfortable victory. Tries from Jack Cotgreave (3), Hunter Middleton (2) and Henry Richards showed our attacking class, and most pleasing was that Plymouth didn’t score. It was a good team performance, with man of the match Peter Thorne.

Jamie Sanders

U18 Girls County Hockey Tournament After a long bus journey the team arrived at Blundell’s school. In anticipation for our first game a warm up and debrief was lead by coach Alan Muller. Each game was 16 minutes one way, our first game was against Kingsbridge. The game was played with great enthusiasm from the team, from not having the best start we worked hard using backward passing to our defense: Maddie Traxton, Sophie Gillies, Lauren Wivel/Antonia Aliberti. Enabling us to control change the direction of attack. This payed off scoring three goals within this first game, scored by Amy Taylor (2) and Maddie Arden. We came off the pitch on a high after our win, however the anticipation was rising as we knew our next match was going to be hard against the home team Blundells 1st.

Nevertheless as true Shebbearians we did not shy away from the challenge and matched their attack with an equally strong defense, swapping Sophie for a more experienced Heather Mathews at Left Back. Lauren also swapped for Antonia Aliberti who proved herself with a strong defensive block. This line of defense were able to pass out to an awaiting set of midfielders and attackers Emily Shepherd, Eevee Banbury, Kitty Scambler, Amy Taylor and Maddie Arden who all played well together passing instinctively to each other even under such pressure. We finished with a 0-0 draw, considering the circumstances this was a victory for us.

Going into our next game against King’s College we knew we had to win to make it through to the next round. Blundells had beaten Kingsbridge 3-0 matching our score and also beaten the team we were about to play 4-0. However this time we won the toss and achieved first push back giving the team a lift of ambition. Within the first 5 minutes Maddie Arden had scored a cracking reverse stick goal from the back line, well worked and set up by Eevee Banbury. We continued to push forward after this triumph with Emily Shepherd making a characteristic run down the right wing and crossing into the ‘D’ setting up the goal for team mates Amy Taylor and Kitty Scambler to quickly pass around the goalkeeper and score. From such a good start we began to relax, which was a mistake as King’s College were pressing and we in our defending 23m mark for the last part of the game. Though leaving goalkeeper Cloe Westaway with a clean sheet as they did not concede any goals allowing us to go through to the next stage with a 2-0 win.

Going through to the next round, Quarter finals as Runner Up behind Blundells resulted in a knockout game against Plymouth. After a previous three challenging games the team was showing signs of fatigue, losing our heads a little in this game. Plymouth gave a hard fight, our battles continued for the full 16 minutes with 0-0 score. Meaning we had to revert to penalty flicks once again like the previous year. Kitty, Heather, Maddie, Amy and Helen stepped up to take the penalty flicks. Cloe excelled and rose to the challenge as goal keeper saving two tricky shots. However the end result of 2-3 to Plymouth meant that they went through and it was time we got on the bus for the long journey home.

Helen Dalton - Captain

U12 Hockey v Exeter CathedralThe match started at 2:40pm and we won the toss so it was our push back. We held possession for 30 seconds then lost it to Exeter. Niamh put up a good fight in defence but unfortunately they got past her. They shot once, Lola kicked it back and then they crossed the ball and scored.

That’s when we realised that they were really good and that it would be a really tough match. Ashleigh then pushed back and Isobel passed and unfortunately it went straight to Exeter’s stick. Jesse-Mae had a good tackle and passed down to Ashleigh but Exeter intercepted and scored three more times.

After half time Exeter pushed back and Ashleigh tackled and got the ball and passed to Gabby who passed to Thalia who passed to Jess but then got tackled and Exeter hit the ball off (long corner).

Niamh took the long corner then passed to Ashleigh who ran into the top of the D and dodged Exeter’s players and scored. We were

pleased we managed to score a goal however Exeter scored five more times before the end of the match. Niamh Shaw got player of the match and the score was 1:8 Exeter.

Isobel watt Captain and Jesse-Mae Foster (Vice Captain)

U14 County Hockey TournamentA couple of Friday’s ago the U14 hockey team had an early start, and made their way to Marjon’s for the day for their county hockey tournament. The sun was shining and the girls were ready to give it their all.

They knew they were to face some stiff opposition with the likes of Mount Kelly and Exeter College in their group however they had nothing to lose and everything to play for.

By the end of the group round Shebbear had successfully achieved second place out of the five teams in their group and were through to the semi-finals where they faced Blundell’s. Unfortunately Blundell’s were too strong and at half time they were 4-0 up, however by the second half of the match, the Shebbear girls had begun to read their opposition and applied even more pressure to their attackers ultimately stopping Blundell’s increase the lead with the final score ending 4-0.
