ROTARY CONNECTS THE WORLD
Rotary is built on connection. When Paul Harris came to Chicago as a young
lawyer,he formed Rotary for one compelling reason: to help him connect to
others in a new city. More than a century later, we have at our disposal
countless ways to form friendships and networks, most of which Paul Harris
never dreamed. Yet Rotary’s ability to connect us remains unique — and
unrivaled.
Through its distinct mission and structure, Rotary International provides a way to connect to our communities,
to network professionally, and to build strong and lasting relationships. Our membership connects us to a
global community through our countless projects and programs, our leadership in polio eradication, and our
work with and through the United Nations. Our service connects us to people who share our values, who want
to take action for a better world; it connects us to people we would never otherwise meet, who are more like
us than we could have imagined; and it connects us to people who need our help, allowing us to change lives in
communities around the world.
As a new decade begins, we are shaping Rotary’s future. In 2019-2020, Rotary will implement its new strategic
plan, respond to the innovation of the Council on
Legislation, and serve in our revitalized areas of focus. But the real work of shaping Rotary’s future lies in our
clubs, where our organization must do the most to adapt to today’s changing realities.
While the club remains the core of the Rotary experience, we are now far more creative and flexible in deciding
what a club can be, how it can meet, and even what can be considered a Rotary meeting. We need to be
organized, strategic, and innovative in how we approach membership, forging wider and deeper connections to
our communities and forming new club models to attract and engage more — and more diverse — members.
Rotary is indeed a family. Yet too often, the structure of membership or the demands of leadership seem to
place Rotary out of reach for today’s younger professionals. Rotary can and should be an experience that
complements our families instead of competing with them. When our Rotary clubs are warm, welcoming places
where service and family go hand in hand, we give family-oriented young professionals the opportunity to
embrace Rotary service and model positive civic engagement. And when we make the expectations of Rotary
offices realistic and manageable for busy professionals,we develop the skills and networks of a new generation
of Rotarians — who will become Rotary leaders.
In 2019-2020, it will be our challenge to strengthen the many ways that Rotary Connects the World, building
the connections that allow talented, thoughtful, and generous people to unite and take meaningful action
through Rotary service.
Mark Daniel Maloney
President, Rotary International, 2019-2020
My fellow “Champion” Club Officers and Rotarians,
This is going to be a very exciting Rotary journey for the District and your Club. I know that with our joined efforts, we CAN and WILL be able to share each Rotarian’s aspirations in life. Let us work to achieve our goals and make this Rotary year the most significant and memorable one.
At our Governor’s training held during the International Assembly in San Diego, USA, I had the privilege of joining more than five hundred of our Rotary leaders who lead their respective Districts. Together, we committed to the vision of our Rotary International President Mark Maloney who encouraged us to live by the theme: “Rotary Connects the World”. Reflecting on it and our work as Rotarians throughout a century of doing good, I realized that at the heart of our Rotary experience is to make innovativeand sustainable CONNECTIONS with our members, people of different cultures, traditions and religions. Once connected with our fellow partners in service, they will be persevered to make a difference in our communities and provide professional opportunities we would otherwise not encounter if notthrough Rotary.
This year, we shall work towards four essential priorities: First, is to grow Rotary – by strengthening membership, both at the Club and Rotaract levels. Secondly, is to allow Rotary meetings become more flexible, closer to our homes and involve our Family in our service projects or activities. Third, is to develop leaders beyond the club level and provide opportunities for them to grow. And fourth, broadening projects related to the SIX Areas of Focus in alignment and partnership with the UnitedNations.

PHILIP C. DUMLAO
President Rotary Year 2019-2020
Our District Governor’s becoming a Rotarian is one for the books. Upon the invitation of a drinking buddy, he unknowingly accepted with his innocence that drinks and food are free during Rotary meetings. That was in 2000 and the rest they say is history.
Convinced of the ideals and principles of Rotary, he became CONNECTED as an active member and eventually became the 45th President of the Rotary Club of Cebu West, seven years after his induction. His stint as President gave honor to his Club with the following recognitions: Area 1-C Most outstanding Club President and Highest TRF Contribution, District’s Outstanding Club Secretary and the most prestigious Rotary International Presidential Citation.
Through the years, he has transcended his leadership from the Club to the District level, serving Rotary in various major positions, amongst others as Assistant Governor, District Trainer, District Secretary, District Finance Chair, Paul Harris Fundraising Chair and the latest Chairmanship of District Rotary Foundation Committee (DRFC).
He also put his money where his mouth is -- He is a Paul Harris Society member and a Major Donor. He believes that this financial contribution demonstrates his commitment to serve others.
Aside from being a Rotarian, he is also actively involved in other socio-civic and religious organizations. He is currently the Vice Chair - Visayas of Philippine Business for Social Progress (PBSP); Board of Regents of Cebu Technological University (CTU), a certified Fellow of the Institute of Corporate Directors (ICD), Past President of the Mandaue Chamber (MCCI) and eleven other prestigious civic, religious and non-governmental organizations, both local and national.
His dedication to serve the country was twice recognized by former President Gloria Macapagal
Arroyo, for promoting productivity and innovations in his advocacy and contributions that benefited businesses groups, government agencies, LGU’s and particularly, the Department of Labor and Employment. In 2014, former President Benigno Aquino III appointed him as one of the Management Representative to the Regional Tripartite Wages and Productivity Board of DOLE Region 7. In 2016, SGV / Ernst and Young awarded him INNOVATION ENTREPRENEUR OF THE YEAR in the Philippines. He was conferred the honorary degree as Doctor of Philosophy in Technology Management by Cebu Technological University, with concurrence by the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) for strengthening Vocational Technology education.
As an entrepreneur, he started his micro business from scratch with limited financial resources and no formal education in Engineering. Slowly but surely, he brought his company to success without sacrificing the betterment of his employees, which includes PWD’s. He is the founding Chairman, President & Chief Executive Officer of Wellmade Motors & Development Corporation, an ISO-9001:2015 international certification in respect for its quality management system, manufacturing and metalworking technologies, with subsidiary companies, joint ventures and franchisees in the Philippines and South East Asia.
A servant leader, he is happily married to spouse Judith, raising four children and with their first
newly born 4th generation grandson. His eldest son, Jeffrey, is also an awarded Rotarian and an active member of the Rotary Club of Cebu Port Center.

Governor, Rotary District 3860
A Look at the History of the Rotary Club of Sta. Ana (Davao)
Organization
The dawning of new day in the life of Rotary International in Davao unfolded when 36 prominent men –
business executives, captains of industry and top professionals – led by Mr. Sebastian “Anggie” L. Angliongto
met in February 1980 to form a rotary club to be named the Rotary Club of Sta. Ana (Davao), the Club for
brevity.
Months preceding that historic meeting, Mr. Angliongto was tapped by the pillars of the Rotary Club of Central
Davao (RCCD), namely PP Emilio “Miming” Palma Gil, PP Alfonso “Al” Lopez and PP Jose “Peping”Abella,
to organize the new club. With his vast experience in developing and managing a world-renown civic group such
as the Jaycee International (JCI), which he once served as the world’s executive vice president, Mr. Angliongto
readily accepted the challenge.
Through the sponsoring and nurturing of RCCD, the Club was chartered on August 8, 1980 under the
jurisdiction of Rotary International (RI) District 3860 with Club Identification No. 17130 issued by the RI.
Core of Charter Members
Mr. Angliongto’s stature in the business community and his known deep involvement in civic work led him to
meet and develop friendship with the who’s who in the business sector. They were the very ones whom he had
invited, including two prominent Dabawenyos who volunteered to join the Club and be among its core charter
members.
Worthy of honor and remembrance in those glory days of the Club were the prominent personas present in that
historic organizational meeting. They included Mr. Angliongto, Atty. WilgefortesEscudero, Atty. Jose Sevilla,
Mr. Edmundo N. Madrazo, Mr. Pedro Durano, Atty. Martin Suelto and John Y. Gaisano Jr., all seven of them
past presidents of the Davao City Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Inc. (DCCCII), the sole organization of
Davao City’s top businessmen, traders, industrialists and agriculturists. To this day, the Club enjoys the
distinction of being the only club led by seven past presidents of the Davao City Chamber.
Mr. Henry Tek Seng Lim, owner of the NCCC Supermarket and known philanthropist, Mr. Dante Abaca, senior
vice president of United Coconut Planters Bank and hotelier, and Mr. Roman J. Cuison Jr., a practicing lawyer
and owner of the Cuison Hotel, were also part of the core group.
Also, worth mentioning is the fact that Atty. Escudero and Atty. Sevilla had served as district governor and
district deputy governor, respectively, of Lions Club International, before volunteering to join the Club.
The Club had elected Mr. “Anggie” Angliongto as Charter President and Atty. “Joe” Sevilla as Charter
Secretary.
Later in the Club’s existence, two of its past presidents –PP “Mart” Suelto and PP Pedrito “Pedring” Salvador
were elected members of the Davao City Council, the law-making body of the city.
In the span of 14 years from the Club’s chartering date, 12 of the charter members had the opportunity to lead
the Club as Presidents.
Meeting Places
The venues of Club’s weekly meetings during the last 36 years were the following places:
1. Chicken’s Delight at Villa-Abrille St., every Saturday at noon time.
2. Cuison Hotel along J.P. Laurel Avenue in Bajada, every Saturday at noon time.
3. Hotel Maguindanao at Claro M. Recto Avenue, every Wednesday in the evening.
4. Grand Men Seng Hotel at Antonio Pichon Sr. Avenue (formerly Magallanes Avenue), every Wednesday in
the evening.
As the checkered business history of Davao City would have it, the first three venues are now defunct, save for
Grand Men Seng Hotel which has remained the meeting place to this very day.
