Why it’s Important to Cite Sources
Everyone knows it’s important to cite sources, but if you have a
copy of the record in front of you, what’s the big deal?
So you can find your proof again. Imagine taking weeks to
find a record on microfilm, then later you need to re-check the
film. If you forget to cite the source, you’ll have to repeat that
lengthy search.
So others can find your proof. If you want to share your
research, pass it down to descendants or submit it to a
genealogical journal, you’ll want to be able to show where you
found everything.
To give your research reliability and credibility. If you
want to be confident you’re telling the true story of your
ancestors and you want to be recognized for your hard work in
doing the research, cite your sources.
To help you figure out how to resolve conflicting
information. If you have a birth year from a census record that
also reinforces a family story, and conflicting information from a
birth certificate, you’re faced with a dilemma. But the birth
certificate will likely be more reliable, because it’s a primary
document and was created closer to the time of birth. (Reprinted from the Family Tree Magazine newsletter)
The Tulsa Annals

Grave Dowsing
Our May Mini-Workshop was very
interesting. Barbara Fulton from the
Bartlesville Genealogical Society shared
fascinating tidbits about grave dowsing.
She explained how the dowsing rods
worked and demonstrated them at the

Kathy Huber, “Settling America, Her Historic Land Distribution”
Families of the Territorial Towns
The settlement of Oklahoma and Indian Territory is a fascinating story.
Our speaker, David Breed, led us from the settlement of our lands
beginning with the Trail of Tears displacement of the Indians to the
establishment of Oklahoma and Indian Territories which later became
the state of Oklahoma. He related how the railroad which was extended
through Indian Territory often brought more displacement of the
Indians through the migration of white settlers who settled near the
railroad. Gradually settlements began springing up including Tulsa. As
white settlers came, the Indians were regulated by government treaties
and allotments reducing their land holdings. The land runs opened more
lands to white settlers, towns were built and county governments were
established. In 1907 Oklahoma became a state and Oklahoma City
became the state Capitol in 1910 replacing Guthrie.
