History of T-Day Football ( GHS vs. TFHS ) How it started

Reviewing records from the Greenfield Recorder and Springfield Republican archives shows a

smattering of football contests between Greenfield and Turners Falls from as early as 1903. Thesecontests were usually club, town, "pick-up" teams made up of high schoolers, club members andshop/mill workers. These football games were not quite the same organized T-Day af[airs that startedin 1927. Newspapers show a game scheduled for Nov.26,1903, T-Day afternoon. No results found.1907 lists GHS playing TFHS twice and winning both 30-0 and 18-0 but not on T-Day. Some clubgames and unoffrcial contests took place ensued on and offfrom 1907 to the 1930's. GHS had aregulaq every year team from 1906 on. TFHS had sporadic attempts in 1903,1907,1916-18,21,23before organizing a full time football team in 1926.The two towns then played from 1927 to nowGHS actually played D.A. on and around T:-Day during the 19-teens until coach Carl "Ump" Nicholsarrived in 1919 and ended the rivalry due to age issues over players used by the prepsters.

ln 1922 Earl Lorden arrived in Turners Falls and revived a part-time sports program. In 1926 hefielded a 4-2-l football team and the idea of playing GHS on T-Day was a possibility, the next year.Cad "Ump" Nichols came to Greenfield in 1919 from Framingham via AthoyYMCA. Lorden fromSalisbury via UNH. Nichols would stay till 1958 and Lorden to 1946. Both were considered legendsin the Taptown ( Greenfield) and the Power town ( TF ) as well as Wmass. Nichols retiring in 1958and Lorden moving on to Umass to coach baseball till 1966.

As the end of the season approached \n 1927 GHS was 6-l-l losing to Hartford Public and tieingSpringfield Tech. TF was 5-l-2. Losing to Cathedral on the last game before T-Day and tieing Wareand Amherst. The two teams were considered the "best" in the Valley based on a loose, logic basedSystem of "I beat this team, who beat that team and so on and so forth. Both had the best " in the Valley"records as games from CMass, Conn. And the Berkshires weren't "counted". On top of this Holyokerefused to play GHS in a " challenge game". A game with Dalton 5-1-I never materialized so GHSDeclared via the Greenfield Recorder that if it beat TFHS on T:Day the would lay claim to the mythicalWMass title. The T- Day game was thus scheduled at the last minute to determine the championship. This was not on the early schedul e in 1927 but a possible game was surmised if both teams had the bestTeams around. And so began the rivalry between the two cross-river football powers at the time.

Stan Pekakski (66 pts.) and Phil Murphy (48) were the 2ndl3rd leading scorers in WMass for GHS.Lou Bush (36) led TFHS and was considered the fastest man in the Valley. GHS averaged 5-7 and145 lbs. per man while TFHS was 5-9 and l43lbs. The game was at Beacon Field in Greenfield anda crowd of 2,500 was in attendance. It was the largest crowd to see a football game ever in the area.

Both teams were undefeated in the Valley. GHS scored 13 points in the first quarter and shut out" will-o the wisp" Lou Bush and the Powertown 13-0 for the first of many T-Day V's to come overthe years. Stan Pekakski and J.Donavon scored the TD's. Pekalski added the PAT.

Greenflreld ended the season as the rfrIMass high school football champion

G.H.S. vs. T.F.H.S T - Day History/Attendance

Starting in1927 TFHS vs. GHS on Thanksgiving Day has been the standard for Franklin Co.football. Records indicate that even before legendary TF coach Earl Lorden arrived in the Powertownin 1923 and GHS mentor Carl "Ump" Nichols in 1918 the two cross-river rivals met severaltimes priorto the "official" start of the grid series in 1927. Archives from the Recorder Gazette indicate thisas so.

Articles from 1907 show GHS and TFHS playing two matches that year. None on T:Day. Thepapershows that on Oct.29,1907 GHS defeated TF 30-0 and on Nov.13,1907 won 18-0 over TF aswell. 1907was oflicially the start of the GHS football program, while TF had to wait to 1926. The "purpleand white"went 5-3-1 that first year.

In l9t2 news reported a "club game" between Greenfield and Turners Falls on Nov. 30 withGreenfieldwinning 2l-0.k was played on T:Day. Similar happenings were planned for 1913 but recordswere notfound to show such an encounter took place.

From 1927 to the present GHS and TFHS have always played on T:Day. Records from 1927show thatAthol vs. Orange which goes back to 1894 with breaks in the schedule as well as also playing onNov.11,Armistice Day as well. They met from 1924-27 on T:Day but stopped untll l944,playing onArmistice Daytill1952 when the series went to T:-Day. So GHS/TF is continuous and may be the most so inWMass.

Holyoke and Chicopee go back to 1908 but did not play on T-Day until post WWll, either1948 or 1953depending on sources. Agawam and W.Side in 1924 and Arms/Mohawk vs. Deerfield/Frontier1933 but they did not originally play on T-Day. Records show only a few games on T-day back inthe 20's-40's andbesides GHS/TF there was St.Joe's,{Pittsfied vs. Pittsfield HS and Palmer vs. Ludlow.

Crowds for the GHSiTFHS game on Thanksgiving in the 1920's were usually @ 3'000 inattendance.By early 1930's the crowds reached 4-5,000. Late in the 1930's records show attendancebetween 6-8,000.at these classics. Quite often, these games determined the WMass mythical footballchampionship. Such as

GHS: 1927,1931 and TF 1935,1936. This trend continued through the 1940's with a peak of10,000 inattendance in 1941and crowds of 6-8,000 until 1950 were common at these contests.

In the 1950's attendance started to decline as TF was no longer a WMass football power andGHS

+tb

struggled in the toughAA Conference playing much larger schools from the Valley. Crowds nowweredown 50% from the S.R.O. showings from the 1930'-1940's. Things picked up a bit in interest inthemid 1960's when TF broke GHS's 15 year winning streak (1950-1964). The 1970's and 80's sawattendances vary from 3-5,000 depending on records and weather. In the 1990's the figures ofcrowdsize stopped being part of the sports write-up/coverage in the local paper as well as the fact othercountyschools also play on T-Day further reducing the numbers. Today crowds run 1,500-2,000, a farcry fromthe "good old days". Will the fans ever tum out in large numbers again on a yearly basis ? Wellmaybeall it will take is/are winning, title contending teams at both schools with IC honors at stakemore oftenthan not. Time will tell.
