Why Now? • Increasing demand from Asia • Forecast soft commodities boom • Tropical expertise export opportunities • Federal North Australia policy • Tablelands population growth • Servicing major projects in adjacent sub-regions
By 2020 ‘more than half of the world’s middle class will be in Asia [and] will demand better quality goods and a wider range of services, creating export opportunities.’
North Australia Policy • June 2013: Coalition’s 2030 Vision for Developing Northern
Australia was a commitment to developing a North Australia policy • June 2014: Green Paper on Developing Northern Australia was a
discussion paper that sought stakeholder inputs and views • September 2014: Final Report of the Joint Select Committee on
Northern Australia was released. This represents a set of bipartisan Parliamentary recommendations to inform development of North Australia
• Mid 2015: White Paper on Developing Northern Australia is due to be released- drawing on submissions to the Green Paper, the Joint Select Committee recommendations, and inputs by Federal officials
Joint Select Committee Recommendations
• Hann Highway and PDR identified as key roads to consider for upgrades
• Nullinga Dam identified as a key water resource project to consider for development
• Full investigation of special economic zones in Northern Australia recommended (SEZ’s may include reduced taxation, reduced foreign investment thresholds, streamlined regulatory requirements)
• Reforms to the taxation system to better promote investment and development in Northern Australia recommended
• Plus North Queensland abattoir, Research Centre for Tropical Agriculture, Rural Investment Fund recommended
‘The main purpose of the Committee’s recommendations is to promote investment and liveability in Northern Australia’
The TFC Economic Vision Agriculture • expanded & profitable local agricultural production • developed an international reputation as a ‘clean, green’ food bowl with improved
export opportunities • developed an international reputation as a centre of tropical agricultural excellence Mining & Resources • expanded local mining activity • the region becomes a significant service & FIFO centre for neighboring mining
regions (Gulf, Cape York, PNG) • local energy production expanded Tourism • hosts a higher volume, higher value tourism industry that showcases the region’s
well-managed & protected environmental assets Other Industries • hosts a range of industries (bio-, hi-tech & creative industries) that depend on high
levels of human capital, built on the basis of the region’s superior lifestyle • other service industries (tropical knowledge, aviation support services via the
proposed Mareeba airport development) built on the region’s connections to the Asia-Pacific region
• a strong construction and human services sector.

The rate of population growth has accelerated in the Tablelands: it took 59 years (from 1947 to 2006) to add 23,321 people to the Tablelands population. However the next 23,321 people are likely to be added within 25 years (from 2006). The majority of this population growth will come principally from migration into the region.

• TFC will assist proponents to develop Investment Profiles for TFC's Investment Opportunities in the Tablelands publication and online promotion
• Investment Profiles: 2-page maximum, template provided. Published Profiles must seek a minimum of $500,000
• Investment proposals that meet agreed criteria will be promoted via TFC and its local partners, Advance Cairns, Trade and Investment Queensland, and the Cairns Regional Investment Group.
