    Bucknell Bison Opener

    Meet Preview:

This weekend, the UMBC Indoor Track & Field team opens up the competitive slate

competing at the Bucknell Bison Opener hosted by Bucknell University. This is the

first opportunity for all members of the team to gauge their progress after working

strenuously for the past two months in preparation. This meet is also the only one

in this calendar year, before the real season picks up after Winter Break. With the

Conference meet pushed forward in the calendar, this meet will be more important

than usual in measuring fitness and strengths of the team.

On the mens side, look for seniors Denny Long (60m) and Trae Proctor (60mH) to

lead the sprints, with both in contention for the Conference title in their respective

events. With many of the top distance runners resting after the cross country

season, junior Andrew Smith will look to break into the Top Three at the

Conference meet in the 800 meters, but will be venturing out of his specialty to run

the mile. In the field events, jumpers Shioma Obemeata (triple jump) and Mo

Drammeh (high jump) will be looking to improve upon their runner up finishes at

last years Conference meet. While in the field, senior Cam McDearmon will team

up with transfer Yao Adantor to take control of the early season Conference

rankings in the weight throw and shot put respectively.

On the womens side, watch for the sprint crew to put up some fast early season

times led by sophomores Mercedes Jackson, Ebonique Jones and Paulette Fogle,

and juniors Kirsten Jones and Deborah Adelola. The l imited distance crew will

feature junior Cody Mezebish and sophomore Sarah Daly who will be looking to get

some speed training in for 800 meters later in the season. In the field events

Amanda Deller will hit the circle in her final season at UMBC while Chowan Brightful

will look to improve upon her

    Athlete Spotlights

    Sarah Daly:

As a freshman last season, Daly had a late start to the indoor season after a foot injury.

She quickly made up for the lost time, but just missed out on the finals of the 500 meter

dash at the indoor Conference meet. During the outdoor season she transitioned up to

the 800 meters, dropping her time down to 2:17.

This fall Daly joined the cross country team and helped in a supporting role, even leadinthe Retrievers at the first race. With a strong fall of training under her belt and a season

of running the 800 meters, look for Daly to be in contention with junior Cody Mezebish

for a tandem top five finish at the Conference meet in the 800 meters.

    Mo Drammeh:

Two seasons ago as a freshman, Drammeh tied for the second best jump in the high

jump at the Conference meet, but slid down to third on a tie breaker. Last season he

moved up a notch to finish second at the Conference meet indoors. With two years of

IC4A qualifications, Drammeh will be looking to take the Conference title that has

remained elusive thus far and push to get over the 6 10 barrier heading into the

    outdoor season.
