Denotation & Connotation • This double page spread is taken from Cosmopolitan

magazine doing an interview with Jennifer Lawrence, there is a main image of her taking up the whole left page, she has a direct gaze, natural make-up look and is leaning against a wall next to her is a Caption. On the second page the headline takes up most of the room saying “Jennifer’s Mystique” then an introduction to the interview and then the interview. The main colours in this article are red, black and white. • The image of Jennifer connotes that she is relaxed by how

she is just leaning against the wall and her natural make-up look connotes she is powerful and doesn't need to hide behind loads of heavy make-up, she has a serious look on her face which connotes that the interview is serious. The word “mystique” has connotations of glamour, mystery and power, the fact that they have used her first name makes the interview more personal to the reader.

Page One • The double page spread is based on Jennifer which is why the main image is used on the left page the image of Jennifer is a medium close up shot from her shoulders up, the rule of thirds have been used and the camera angle is eye view from her, the lighting is coming from her left side making a shadow behind her. Her clothes and make up are both very classy as nothing is over the top and she has a natural look on her. Her face expression is serious and she has a direct gaze which connotes that the interview is personal and serious about her work maybe as her look suggests she is a business women. There is a caption next to the main image which says “Young, determined and ready to take on the world” this connotes that she is up and coming star which goes with the image of serious and powerful, these are used to let the reader know what the article is about.

Page two • In the article there is a Drop capital which stands out as it is much larger

font then the rest of the text on the page, this is used so that the reader will know that the text is important which is it here as it’s the headline, the headline is also in serif font which is unconventional because titles are normally in sans serif font so it stands out more to the audience. • In the top right corner of the page is the logo of Cosmo in black and then

upfront in red and capital letters this makes it stand out and look professional as the readers will know that the double page spread is from them, The use of the word upfront is good because it tells the reader that in the interview they are getting up close and personal. The red is also in the drop cap J this makes the page look set out well. • The article is set out into two columns with gutters between them making

it easier for the audience to read and it looks more professional and neat, the text is black which makes it easier to read on the white background. • There is white space around the text which is mostly around the edge of

the page, this makes the text easier to read and the layout more professional as the text doesn't’t look like its slipping off the page.

Page Two• The word “mystique” is the name of one of the roles Jennifer

Lawrence played in the film X-men first class, by using this they have incorporated this element of her career into the article as well as using the fact that it connotes power and mystery, this targets both people who like Jennifer and people who like X-men into wanting to read the article. • In the introduction they talk about how Jennifer is a “rising star”

and the films she has played, this will attract a wide range of audiences as all the films have different target audience like hunger games for example anyone who likes these films will want to read the article. • In the interview they are talking about the films she has been in

and one of the questions were about action genre films, this connotes that the target audience is for people who like action films which are mostly males, and the hunger games book attracting read readers as well. • This articles target audience is very wide as it attracts people who

like Jennifer Lawrence, Action Films, the films she has played in and also book readers.
