Music Magazines: Textual Analysis

Page 2: Textual analysis

Buzz word- Using the word exclusive draws the audience in. It allows the consumer to feel more involved as they’re the only ones to know about the article. In ways it also shows how Mojo is unique as no other magazine has this article. Using red to represent the Buzz Word is also quite interesting as it shows that it is so important that it is completely different from the colour scheme represented in this magazine, making it stand out makes the audience want to know why it is so important.

Plug- This is key for Mojo as it draws the audience in as they’re curious at what this CD is. Using a plug allows the audience to be interesting more so in the magazine as they’re getting something extra with their favourite magazine. Furthermore, it is represented in a battered sticker manner. Using this contrasts against this idea that it is a new CD. Using this gives the magazine as somewhat aged effect, allowing the audience to realise that it is somewhat older music. It is music they will enjoy and not completely recent.

Headline & Anchorage- This text is in a vibrant green and shows the importance of the article. This is the largest headline text on the page, this shows the importance of the article. Using the name of the band ‘Kings of Leon’ is really interesting as people who like this band are already interested in the article. Underneath in smaller and different coloured text is more information of the article. This anchorage gives us more insight into what the article is about and in ways is more persuasive using ‘Biggest rock band’ really pushes forward that the audience must be reading this article.

Date line, Price & Barcode- This is an obvious feature that most magazines have, on the barcode it is clear that this is where the consumers will scan their item. This being easy to see is a clear feature which is needed, however the date line and price of the magazine is displayed above the barcode. The date shown shows the time this magazine was –published. In ways this shows how recent the magazine is and shows that it is current for the audience. This is useful as if the audience want to collect these magazines they can look at the allocated date and see what was happening in that current time. However, the price of the magazine is shown in a small font also. This shows that the company doesn’t want the consumers want the price to stand our for the audience. This is as this is not appealing for the audience and may make them not want to buy the magazine.

Sub image- Mojo includes two other images different from the main image. These include additional stories in the magazine, using these shows the audience that there is more to what additional images add interest for the audience making them read the magazine.

Masthead- The title of the magazine is a quite a simple use of font as it shows what the magazine is called with the smaller text showing forth what type of genre the magazine is. The masthead uses the colour denotations of white and green. These colours next to one another contrast and are bold against the black background. Furthermore, the use of these colours don’t show forth a particular gender for the audience, this is quite interesting as it means they’re using somewhat natural colours that are basic to show that it is a magazine for all genders. The main name of the masthead is ‘Mojo,’ the term Mojo is usually used to describe a magic charm or an influence. This shows that the music magazine is being published as being magical and that nothing else is like the magazine itself. Using this word, is quite interesting as it specifies a comfort in the audience as older people are more likely to know what this means rather than the younger generation.Feature article photo/Main Image- The main focal point of the magazine is the musicians from the band: ‘Kings Of Leon,’ these are clearly the central focal point of the magazine as the main headline on the cover shows us that it is about them. The characters in the main image are captivating to the audience by using direct address. Using this, makes the audience feel connected to these characters. The positioning of the musicians is also quite interesting for the feature photograph as they’re all shown in quite rough, and edgy styles and all the musicians are shown in the image. The use of them being closer and further away from the camera denotes that they’re all important and using a filling image adds interest to the cover. Holding the audience further, clearly we’re seeing musicians that the audience know. Using this allows the audience to feel already captivated as they’re interested in these characters that are represented.Sub Heading & Cover line- On the right and left hand side of the page is the subheadings of the other articles in the magazine. They use smaller text, this reinforces this idea that these are not as central and important in the magazine. In ways it adds to this idea that they’re less important to the magazine. They use cover lines like ‘To hell and back again’ to show that these articles are very interesting. Using these cover lines makes these articles seem more interesting which engages the consumers of the magazines as they’re interested in what exactly these articles are about.

Layout- When viewing the front cover, there is this busy and complex layout of the text. Using this makes us feel that there is a lot going on in this music magazine is worth buying. The layout uses the colour scheme mainly of green, white and black. These are quite darker colours in a sense and makes it stand out from other music magazines. It gives the magazine a somewhat grungy aspect and that it is different from other magazines. This in ways appeals to the audience as using a darker scheme might be more their style rather than bright colours!

Page 3: Textual analysis

Mise-en-sceneCharacters: The focal characters of the magazine are musicians, using people relevant to the genre of the magazine allows the audience to familiarise themselves and know that this is a music based magazine. They’re represented in the a black and white format, this gives the characters a mysterious element and gives this older touch. This is useful as the magazine is targeted for 37 year olds, this is an older based audience than other magazines and they might like this more edgy and older idea on the characters. All the characters on the magazine are not smiling, and there is this serious element towards these characters, in ways this shows the audience that this magazine is serious about what they’re talking about. Further the characters are central for our eyes to view. This means we’re instantly engaged, they’re shot in a medium shot. This gives us a good view of the characters and allows us to have eye contact with the characters. The musicians are looking directly at the camera meaning that the characters are engaged with the audience. Using this posed shot allows us to really engage into the magazine, it also gives the characters this edgy style and intrigues the audience as they want to know more about these characters and what their article is in the magazine. Costumes: The costumes that the characters are wearing on the front cover is difficult to see as there is text covering the page. However, from what is seen the costumes of characters could be classified as smart-casual dress sense. This could reinforce this idea of intelligence and class as one of the characters is wearing glasses. This could reinforce to the older audience that this magazine only includes classy people in their magazine. Using this smarter dress sense somewhat contrasts from the way in which the characters are looking at us. This element of contrast is quite clever and makes the audience want to find out more about these characters.Lighting: The lighting of the front cover is a dark image, giving the magazine this grunge and darker feel. Using this in ways gives the magazine a mysterious hint as we cannot see everything with this dark colour scheme. The use of black against the characters gives them a focal point and allows us to really focus onto these characters. The use of light on the characters faces is clear, using lighting on their faces makes us see their facial expressions and how they’re represented in more depth. This allows us to really see what and who is being represented on the front cover. By using this it allows us to focus on the characters themselves. Using this dark lighting in ways contrasts against the bright text colour of green. Using this contrast really lets us see a change against the text and the image. This in ways makes the lighting of the magazine feel darker and gives it a somewhat colder feel to the magazine. The fact that the lighting is dark and isn’t uninviting makes the audience intrigued as it makes them more so interested in what’s inside the magazine.

CameraworkThe camerawork in the front cover is a medium shot of the characters. This medium shot shows the upper half of these characters so we can see who these characters are and so they’re focal to a viewpoint. Using this type of shot means the characters are instantly focal and central to the magazine page. The shot includes lots of space from their head. Although the image is above the masthead there is lot’s of space above so we can still clearly see the masthead. When looking at the main image it seems that they have different positioning of the camera some are further away and others closer. Using this is interesting and gives the magazine cover depth in what we can see. the music and the audience. The sub-images on the cover are not as dominating as the main image, they’re smaller close up shots of musicians faces. These images are still clear to see, however using closer camerawork allows a contrast between characters and shows that they’re not the focal point. Using close-up allows us to see their expression more to see what type of article it will be making it more interesting for the audience.Colour SchemeThe cover uses a limited colours scheme of black, white and green. The black and white gives a grunge yet dated style to the magazine, this is useful as it gives this idea that although music has aged it is still great – appealing more to the audience. Furthermore it adds a mysterious element to the text as they’re not bright colours and adds a different feel to the magazine. As if it is true to what it is saying. The darkness of this is contrasts against this bright neon green. This is an unusual colour for any magazine it is not usually seen. This gives a shocking effect to the audience as it is unusual. It contrasts against the darkness showing that the magazine has light and dark areas. Using this shows that the magazine is unique and unlike any other. Also, using this green is a bold statement and gives the magazine a different edge and huge contrast from other forms of magazine.LanguageThe cover uses no direct address on it’s cover to the audience, it disconnects the audience by doing this however. Using short and small pull-quotes it makes consumers feel more connected to the magazine articles. ‘I hated myself’ interests the audience as they wonder what it is about. Using this type of language really intrigues the audience as there is this sense of mystery. Using ellipsis also intrigues the audience as it adds tension meaning the audience has to know as it gives the article a somewhat cliff-hanger. Using the word ‘Britain’ also intrigues the audience as it is a British magazine and the audience feel that they’re being evolved as it is where they’re from. This gives the cover a closer to home feel as people feel closer to the magazine as it saying something they’re familiar with. Including short parts from the magazine on the front cover interests the audience as it makes them feel that they’re missing out on the musical sensations that they have to know about!FontsMojo Magazine’s masthead seems to be an edited font as in the title it has the words ‘ the music magazine.’ Using the word ‘the’ represents that this is the only music magazine that matters. The Word ‘Mojo’ seems to mix the two font types metroblack and lithos black to create the logo. It has a bold and is very easy and clear to see. Although it is covered slightly by the characters head we can still clearly see what it says. It uses the colour connotations of white and green. These are two very individual colours they contrast one another so we can easily see them. The masthead uses the same colour scheme of the rest of the text in the magazine. On the sub-headings the main words are in the vibrant green Using this green is very bold and is different from what we typically expect, this makes the audience want to read it more as it emphasises that this magazine is individualist and different showing forth to the audience that Mojo is unique. Underneath is slightly smaller text using the same font – which isn’t really clear but seems like capital letters in a font like Arial. They however use white, this clearly show that the cover lines and anchorage are different from the headings.

MOJO MAGAZINE COVER ANALYSIS

Page 4: Textual analysis

Who is the text aimed at?:The text for this magazine is aimed towards the target age of 37. This is somewhat older audience is represented with the layout of quite a simple colour scheme of black, green and white. Using a simpler colour scheme allows the audience to easily see different headlines in the magazine. As Mojo is set towards an older audience it uses musicians on the cover that are not current, and possibly not known by a younger audience. Using a menu strip on the cover allows us to see what is in the magazine. The use of font and layout of the page is quite simple compared to other magazine covers. I feel this works well with the audience as they get to see what they want on the cover, using a font type that is easy to read appeals to them as unreadable text would possibly put the audience off. Using the main image in a black and white colour scheme, it adds to this somewhat grunge effect. This aims towards the audience as it makes the magazine feel older when looking at it and it really gives the page a focus and attracts the audiences attention easily. What assumptions are made about the audience which are revealed in the text’s scheduling and positioning?:Using a somewhat typical organised layout, it seems that when looking at this we feel that the audience has more maturity. The magazines positioning of the masthead is at the central top of the page, and the subheading are either below the right-hand or left-hand side of the page. This is quite ordinary and shows that although the audience is for those obsessed with music, it seems that the audience still want clarity in what they’re viewing. Using capital letters in all the text it shows that the audience are more likely to read it easily, as not all magazine covers use all capitals so it appeals to them more and represents this idea that the audience love music and it is a big statement for them. The font uses either the colour scheme on green and white. Using these colours are quite simple and appeal to the female and male genders. The use of this vibrant green further shows that the audience like things that make a statement, and as green isn’t a usual colour it shows the audience likes individuality and things that aren’t ordinarily interesting as they’re to others.Where and when is the audience likely to receive the text?:The audience is likely to see the cover in any local supermarket for month that it is issued. The cover will be represented in supermarket stores like ASDA, Sainsbury's and Tesco’s as it is one of the largest music magazine’s in the UK. This shows that it is widely known and seen throughout the UK. The audience are also likely to receive the text when they’re just browsing the magazine section. Using contrasting colours it really sticks out to the audience and although at a first glance seems a quite dark setting. Using this dark setting against other magazines draws the audiences attention in so that they’re drawn to the magazine before purchasing. Furthermore, not many magazines will have ‘Kings of Leon’ as there main image. This will attract the audience as seeing it is an older band will draw them in as other magazines are less likely to do this. How does this influence the form and structure of the text?:When in the supermarkets Mojo wants their magazine to stand out. This means the cover uses a simple yet effective colour scheme to really attract their audience as it will contrast against other magazines. Using simple and quick cover lines ‘To hell and back again’ it really interests the audience as although not given much information of what it is on about using this attracts the audience. Also the use of a black and white image is different from other magazines this influences the a change as this isn’t typically seen and attracts the audiences attention as it gives a clear contrast and somewhat darker and mysterious effect. How will this audience 'read' this text?:The audience will read this text firstly by viewing the main image. This is a bold and intriguing image for the audience, using direct address makes the audience intrigued without even reading any of the headings in the text. Their eyes will then draw to the headline and anchorage that uses large font to draw their attention. This will grab their attention using an interesting anchorage makes the audience more likely to read as they want to know what is inside the magazine. They will then read the different sub-heading and sub-images. These parts are not as vastly seen ass the focal point of the magazine however, the audience will read these other parts of the magazine seeing if it is suitable for them. This page is a quick scan and usually the audience don’t read the cover they look at the main image seeing if it appeals to them.

MOJO MAGAZINE COVER ANALYSIS

Page 5: Textual analysis

Pull-Quotes- Using quotes from an article in the magazine gives the page some different type of text. Using this it gives the page something more rather than just the contents inside the magazine. They intrigue the audience by using something interesting in an article to attract them to read it. The quote from the musician is quite mysterious as we don’t know what she is talking about interesting the audience. Using this interests the audience linking towards this idea that the contents page focuses somewhat around this musician.

Layout- The contents page uses a professional and simple layout to show the information of articles. It uses a page on the right-hand side and text on the left-hand side this is interesting as it allows the audience to differentia the text from the photography. Using this layout it is easy for the audience to focus on the information.

Headline- The audience can see what type of page this is by using headlines. These headlines section up different sections of the magazine. The headline ‘features’ clearly specifies what is in the magazine in this issue. Showing these makes it interesting to view for the audience so they can easily find what article to read first. The headlines are in red. Using this red in a warm colour. This warm colour gives this idea that these articles are new, current, and are hot in the music industry. Using a different colour emphasises it for the audience so they know it is sectioning parts off. Using this divides the page up slightly and makes it easier to view for the consumers.

Masthead- On Mojo’s contents page, it doesn’t tell us that it is as contents page. This is interesting as it’s assumed the audience knows this from the layout and language on the page. It seems that they have done this because the audience are of an older audience so they know what it is. Using their magazine title it showcases originality that this is their magazine and it is original and unique as other magazines don’t do this. It is represented at the top in the centre of the image, this means it’s one of the main items o text we see. It is larger than the other text displayed, this gives the page a nice layout as we know underneath this masthead will include the contents of Mojo. It is in a white font, this is nice and clear to see and work well against the grey background.

Feature article photo/Main Image- There is only one photograph on the contents page. This is interesting as this makes it the focal point, it is displayed on the right-hand side of the page this gives the page a professional look to it. Displaying the text on the left hand-side and picture on the right hand-side we can see empty space and gives it a clear, defined look. The character in the photograph isn’t using direct address. This is interesting as they’re looking in the direction of text as if to reinforce the consumers to look at what is happening inside the magazine. This disconnection with the audience intrigues them more as they can’t see all of the person. The photograph is very large on the page, this makes it very dominating. When we first look it is clear that this character in the picture is actually from a feature article in the magazine. Using this character as the central image and the first article ‘feature’ displayed shows importance. Her height on the page emphasising that she is central to the magazine and connotes this idea that the article is huge and unmissable for the audience to see. She is in a high contrast, this is appealing to the audience as we can clearly see her. Although we’re only viewing her from a side view in a long shot it intrigues us as we want to see more of her.

Banner- Underneath the masthead is a banner. This is a different banner from what we usually expect. The banner tells us where Mojo is situated at selling music. ‘London’ is the first word of the banner. This is interesting as because it has been published in Britain they put that city first. However, Mojo possibly may have done that to reinforce that they’re in Britain rather than the other countries making the audience more keen to buy it. Using these places it gives the audience the idea that Mojo is a popular magazine meaning the contents inside will be good. It is displayed in a smaller font in the same colour white. Using this gives the title of the contents a professional look, using this appeals to the audience as although they’re lovers of music they’re likely to want it to look professional and well put together rather than the opposite.

Date line- Underneath the masthead and banner we can see the date this magazine was made and published. This is key as it gives a time when this magazine was produced and allows the audience to know if it is current.

Page numbers- Using numbers allows the audience to see where to find certain contents and articles in the magazine. This is useful as it clearly marks where things are in the magazine and means the audience can find what they want easily. Like the headline the page numbers use the same colour of red. This red strikes a colour of importance to the audience, making there eyes drawn to it. Using this red against white giving it a clear contrast. Sub-Heading- The sub-headings of the page present what the article for certain pages are and gives a glimpse into what they’re about. The sub-headings are interesting on this page using musicians names reinforces the musical genre. Using this allows the audience to familiarise what musicians are in the magazine allowing them to know if they will be interested or not. Using these are simple and quick headings to read, this means the audience instantly knows what is going on and can get really into the magazine.Cover-Line- Using this gives the readers more information on what that article is about. Giving extra information is useful as the consumers can read this and it will intrigue them more into reading the different articles. The cover lines are in smaller text than the sub-heading, this shows that although it is important to the audience they don’t want it to stand out.

Page 6: Textual analysis

Mise-en-sceneCharacters: There is one main image on the magazine contents, with only one character. This is interesting for the audience as it shows a focal point to one musician in the magazine drawing them in. The character is displayed in a long-shot, being further away from the character in ways shows how this character is dominating the page as although we see allot of the character she is on a large scale emphasising the importance of this person to the magazine. The character use indirect eye contact to draw the audience in she is looking at somewhere that the audience cannot see and we cannot see her eyes looking at us. By doing so, the connection with the consumers is lost however it adds a mystery to this character as we don't know what she is looking at. She is looking up above her, this could add that the character is seeing greater things and in ways reinforces that the article about this character could be about moving upwards in life. Using a side-view of the character we get to see the shape of the character, by doing so she really defines an changes the way the text is displayed by curving around her. By doing so it makes a statement that she is of importance.Costumes: We can clearly see the main character wearing a black dress, this connotates a sense of mystery towards the character for us. This black outlines the character giving her significance to the page. It gives it an edge compared to it’s light grey background, this allows us to see how she is central to the page. In ways black adds a darker touch to the page, the costume contrasts against the white and red colours of font we see and reinforces this idea how this could be a darker and mysterious article about her. She is wearing white long pearl jewellery these are interesting as it shows a sense of an older person. This targets the audience well as it is for an older audience so they might be more interested in this character. Using this white as jewellery adds a clear contrast against her outfit. Using this it gives two aspects to the character, open and mysterious this interests the audience and makes us want to see more of this. Her costume really adding to the page as it is what we directly look at when viewing this page.Lighting: The page is given a mysterious lighting. On the character the light seems to have been shot from above, the characters face is lighted and the rest of her body seems darker. This is quite interesting as it could represent ideas that the character displays a happy face but deeper she is feeling distraught and upset. Using this light and darkness creates shadows on the character. These shadows are interesting as they’re displayed on her face as if the item she is looking at is putting these shadows on her face, we don’t know where these are so it interests us. Using light on her face allows us to really focus and see who this mysterious character is. Using little lighting on the main focus allows us to look at it more wondering more about the character presented. Furthermore, the little lighting could present a spotlight on the character, using this could show that she is the only one of importance.

CameraworkThe main image is a long shot of the characters body. Using a long-shot allows us to see the character more clearly and in ways could reinforce this idea that there is a lot of information in this magazine and showing a long shot emphasises the length of what is in the magazine. The camerawork is displayed in a high quality studio shot. Using this high quality adds to what the magazine presents and that Mojo is a magazine that has a nice representation. The camerawork displays the character on a side shot. Using this side shot we can see the silhouette of the characters body more. Using this adds development of the page as she changes the way the text is displayed showing that this character is important as she changes how things are presented. Also, it adds this mystery to her as this is not directly took, so the consumers wonder what is going on and adds a mysterious aspect.Colour SchemeThe colour scheme of the magazine uses the denotations of: grey, red and white. These colours are interesting as the red and grey contrast against one another as red is a warm colour whereas grey is a colder colour. Using this it adds tension between items and reinforces that Mojo displays the good and bad. Using the red on the page displays important parts of the magazine to the audience. All the headings are displayed in red, this emphasises them so the audience can see them clearly. This red is also shown in the characters hair. In ways this links the colour scheme and character together, showing that this is a fiery, interesting magazine. The white stands out against the grey and allows us to clearly see the contents of the magazine. Using the fonts in the colours white and red gives the magazine a basic house style. Using this simple style allows the audience to read the page easily. Using this it gives a clear layout of how the page is presented and gives it a professional and simple look.LanguageLike Mojos other magazine page there is no direct address to the audience in the contents page, this somewhat reflects this idea that you're not involved in the magazine until you're reading the audience. Using this Mojo disconnects it's audience and this intrigues the as they want to be wanted by Mojo. The contents uses simple language to get it's point across about what the contents is about and making it captivating to it's audience . Including some interesting descriptive terms: 'soul-dripping high fashion vision,' it interests the audience as they're older they're more likely to read this and appreciate the use of description. By using this it makes the audience intrigued as it is a different way of describing. Using language of musical features like different bands like 'Green day' and all of the sub headlines being the names of musicians it evokes the magazines genre. By including these features in its language it really tells the audience that this magazine is solely about music and nothing else. By doing so it interests them as the magazine is shown to be educated and creates a musical atmosphere.FontsMojo contents masthead is it’s logo for the magazine. This is interesting as they use the title of the magazine to reinforce that this is their magazine and nothing else. ‘Mojo’ is a mix between the two font types metroblack and lithos black. Using this is a really basic and clear to see title, this is the biggest text on the page reinforcing that Mojo is important to show. All the other font on the page is in the capital letters aside from the quote and cover lines. The banner, dateline headings, subheadings and page numbers are in a bold font. This clearly shows the importance of this text. They’re shown in the font of Arial. This is an easy to read font and clearly allows the audience to see what it is saying. Using these bold fonts in either red or white shows how although they’re of importance the colour changes in what it is situating. Using these colours allows the audience to see what they’re viewing more clearly. The cover lines and quote continue to use this Arial based text, however they’re in lowercase. This adds this idea that although they’re important they’re not significant to the page and demonstrates more information in a subtle way.

MOJO MAGAZINE CONTENTS ANALYSIS

Page 7: Textual analysis

Who is the text aimed at?:The text it aimed towards an older audience. Using a basic layout for the contents Mojo really lays the contents easily for them to understand. Using simple language and easy to see text the contents is a simple basis so the audience can really see what they want easily. Using a professional layout with easy and clean colours red, grey and white the audience are appreciative an can see areas clear as these are bold colours and contrasts really help the aud9ience see different parts of the page. Using capitals really allows the audience to see what the text is being said, using this it adds again this simple idea to the contents. Furthermore, using only one image gives this focal point to the magazine, using a posed character that ties in against the background it really allows the text to come together. Using a popular musician really initiates the audience as they will know who this is and it will interest them to read beyond the contents. What assumptions are made about the audience which are revealed in the text’s scheduling and positioning?:When looking at the contents we assume the audience is organised and have formality. By using a structured layout of the contents including heading of 'features' to split the text up it really allows the audience to see what they do and don't see. Using a simple layout it is clear that we feel the audience likes their magazines to be professional and be simple to read and not all over the place. The use of easy to see yet strong colours allows us to make the assumption that the audience like to be intrigued in this bold manner yet not to the extent of making the text unreadable. By using colours white and grey they seem more an interesting colour to an older audience showing that they're not bothered with bright colours they just want to be able to read the contents. Using long cover lines to summarise articles it also adds the assumption that the audience like to read and a more educated audience.Where and when is the audience likely to receive the text?:The consumers are likely to receive the text in their local supermarket or possibly at a friend's house when suggesting what's a good magazine to read. The audience are likely to read the contents age when they first open the magazine this could be when bought form the shop or when they're ion the shop wondering what articles are within the magazine. This is key for Mojo to then make the magazine page as interesting to the audience as possible as if not what the audience want they will not purchase the magazine. Buying a simple layout it really adds to a formulaic idea to the magazine and makes consumers wants to buy it as it is easy to understand and read and not complicated like other magazines. How does this influence the form and structure of the text?:This is the second page consumers will look at against the cover, this means if the contents isn't satisfying they're less likely to buy the magazine. Using as simple layout and a large ma image that captivates their eyes, it makes the audience interested as the easier the txt is to understand they're more likely to want the magazine. The form of the txt is in an Arial font meaning it is easy to understand by doing so it means the audience can quickly read the contents. The structure of the text will be simple and easy to understand and include language of musicians: 'Florence Welch' by doing so it captivates the audience without them reading, by doing so it means the audience will be able to make a decision on whether to buy the magazine or not.How will this audience 'read' this text?:The consumers will firstly be captivated by the main image. This is a large image so they will immediately see it, by doing so they will see the mysterious character and wonder why she is on the contents. Their eyes will then move towards the contents of the magazine firstly 'features' this is as it is near the centre and are less likely to read the masthead 'Mojo' as that isn't relevant for what they want. Their eyes will be then be drawn to the various subheading and if they're interested will read the cover lines with summaries what the article is about. By doing so they're engaging with the magazine already wondering if this is the right product for them. This page like the cover is usually a quick read of what is inside the magazine, this is as there isn't much text to read and the audience will only be really looking at the articles that interest them the most.

MOJO MAGAZINE CONTENTS ANALYSIS

Page 8: Textual analysis

Masthead- The masthead for the double page spread is very small compared to the pull-quote below. This is interesting as it reinforces this idea that the name of the article isn’t important for the reader. By spacing out the letters it allows the audience to read the text easily, this is presented differently compared to the other text on the page. This shows that although it is small it is significant to the audience. It is presented so it doesn’t captivate the audience but allows the audience to read it if they want to. Using the golden colour in the ‘50’ emphasises the text and shows the importance of this statistic. By using this it intrigues the audience as they’re wondering why this piece of text is golden and the rest isn’t this somewhat confuses the audience making them even more interested.

Pull-Quote/Headline- For the double page spread Mojo interestingly use a pull-quote from the text to be the central focus point for the text. This is interesting as this means there is no main heading for the page, the pull-quote acts like the headline for the pages as it really emphasises what the article is about. Using a pull-quote interests the audience as we’re unknown of what is being spoken about and adds this mystery to the article. The use of the word ‘be’ really intrigues the audience as it is repeated on three lines. The middle line is in this golden colour: ‘Be there now.’ Using this in a golden colour adds this idea that this article is covering what is happening now and is so important that the audience must know about it, this really emphasise the pull-quote and interests the audience as it contrasts against the other white text. By using this it is a clear focal point for the page.

Cover-line- Reinforcing this idea that the pull-quote on the page acts like a headline there is a cover line underneath. This tells the audience a synopsis of what the article is about using interesting words like ‘ crisis’ and ‘adventures’ to make the article seem interesting to the audience. Using this shows that audience what the article is about showing them whether or not they want to read it. Using peoples names in the golden font forms this idea that these people are of high importance, some of the audience may not know who these people are and will be intrigued to read the article to find out who they are. The use of this cover line helps give the page something extra, and Mojo makes it fun and interesting to read so the audience will read the article.

Blank Space- The whole page isn’t filled with images and text. Using blank space allows the page to have a professional effect, and allows it to be divided up so it is easier for the audience out understand. Using this space allows the audience to not feel over-whelmed by the page presented and let’s them focus on the focal points of the pages.

Main Image- There is only one image in this article. Using a black and white photograph it really appeals to the audience as Mojo have taken that colour away from the picture making us more interested in what we see and not just the colours. Using this black and white adds this darker setting to the double page spread linking it towards it’s black background. The character in the picture is not looking at us. This is interesting as the consumers cannot even see the mans eyes as it’s covered by sunglasses. This is evoking to the audience as they want to know why he is directly not wanting to look the audience in the eye, as if there is something mysterious and hidden in this character. Furthermore, there is only one person in this image, by using this we can see that they’re the focal of this double page spread. By using this we can develop this understanding That this character links to what the article is about. The image uses a prop. Reinforcing this idea that this is an article about music as we can see the musician playing guitar and in a live action shot which is unfamiliar yet interesting to the audience.Drop Cap- The article uses a drops cap to introduce us to the article. Using this is interesting especially as it is in a traditional font. Using this shows this idea that we’re

writing not only an article but an actual story. Using this is interesting as it instantly allows the consumers to know that this is the article. Furthermore this one letter is huge compared to the article, using this interests the audience as they want to know why exactly it being with ‘W.’ This drop cap adds some different ideas to the page and gives it a more traditional feel. The drop cap is in a different font compared to the traditional article text, this is interesting as the page is contrasting traditional and modern together.

Article- The font for the actual article itself is in a different and more traditional font. By using this it gives an older feel the audience, using this text gives it a different direction interesting them. The article itself talks about the subject matter ‘Neil Young’ this is good as the double page spread revolves around this character making the consumers know more about this person. The Articles text is split into paragraphs by doing so this makes it easier to read and somewhat divides the article up making it simpler to read.

Reference- The smallest text on the page is the reference. This is something that is usually displayed quite small as most of the audience are not bothered where the main image came from. Using this shows the audience how and where the image is from. Using this confirms with the audience it is the character who we think it is. Interesting the reference also includes some of Neil Young’s speech saying ‘I really don’t like to be in a bar.’ using this reinforces this idea that the character is unhappy in the image. This interests the audience as there is more to this photograph than what we expect. Furthermore situating the place is helpful as it allows us to see that Mojo knows where they get there live pictures form.

Mise-en-sceneCharacters: There is only one character on the double page spread. This is key for the double page spread as it is about this singular musician. Using this shows that he is key to this article and people who are familiar with the musician will be interested in the article. The character is given a whole page to be displayed this shows that the character is key to this page. The character is presented in action of playing the guitar and possibly singing. This clearly shows the character is a musical reinforcing this musical genre to the consumers, using this shows that this musician is in the moment. This intrigues the audience as it gives a dramatic tone to the page. The characters facial expression is quite intense and seems very within the music . Furthermore, there is no direct address towards the audience. The musician is playing music not towards the audience. This makes the audience interested as he is not looking at us so we wonder who he is looking at. Also, the character is wearing sunglasses reinforcing this idea that this musician is too high class to look at the audience and furthermore adds this cool and unique idea to the character. Costumes: This musicians costume is not clearly see in this photograph, from what is seen it seems that the character is wearing a shirt. This shows that although in the image his hair is in a messy manner they’re smartly represented, this contrasts the character giving him edge for the audience interesting them. He is also wearing sunglasses. This is interesting as it gives the character a somewhat cool view and unique for the audience. Not seeing his eye shadows the audience from who it is, not knowing interests the consumers as they’re intrigued in what exactly is the artist looking at. Using these sunglasses giving the character a unique view which will be appealing to Mojo’s audience.Props: There is only one prop in this image. The musician is displayed in the middle of making music and shows him playing guitar. This adds to the idea that this is a musical magazine. Him using a guitar adds an interesting idea that this music is raw and about how the musician performs, using this gives the musician a somewhat edge as we cannot really see what type of guitar it is. This interests the audience as it is unknown making them wonder more about what genre this musician plays making them intrigued into the article.Lighting: The page is completely black, this adds a mystery to the article and in ways we develop this idea that this is a darker and intense article about the musician. The light is only focused on the musician clearly he is the focal point of this article, the lighting focusing on his face allows for an interesting aspect of this idea of who he is seems more important than the music he plays. His face being given light giving mystery to the rest of his body. Furthermore, although the artist has lighting on him he is shown in a black and white. This is interesting as it shows that this musician is older interesting the audience.

CameraworkThe main image is a medium close up. The camerawork is taken on a slight angle, using this gives the page an edgy and unprofessional feel by doing so it gives this 'raw' feel to the page and hints towards an edgier and grungier style of article. Using a live shot makes the page more interesting as the musician isn’t posing allowing the audience to see depth within the character by doing so it allows the audience to see the real musician. With him not posing it adds to this musical feel we get in this image adding to the musical form of the magazine. The camerawork is shot with him not facing the audience this is interesting as the audience cannot see much of him. This reinforces mystery to the audience as we're wanting to know more about the character wondering who he is playing for, and what music he is playing. Using this adds a sense of mystery and makes us want to read the article more, including the prop slightly in the image shows somewhat where this musician is but also showing more of the musician himself shows that this is about the character himself and not the music he plays.Colour SchemeThere is a dark theme for this double page spread, using a black background it gives a dark aspect to the article and makes it more mysterious , using this mystery it really adds to the article and makes the audience interested. Using white and a golden colours as the font colours. It adds simplicity to the page, using only two colours allows the audience to see key information in a clear colour, this directs our eyes easily to different text displayed on the page. Using 'be there now' in a golden colour is really highlighted on the page by using this it really attracts the audience wondering what its about. The image on the page is in black and white. It's clear that this is a darker article with these colours. It also reinforces that this is an older musician linking to thee audience as they're more likely to know Neil Young.LanguageThe language on the double page spread, uses a professional and simple language to tell the audience about this musician. In the text they use the word 'he' allot for example 'his power in the power' using the word of he for the musician is interesting as it shows that the audience know abut this musician already and gives the language a more so casual level. There is also use of descriptive language: 'sonic adventures.' This is interesting as it is confusing what it perhaps means and this makes the audience intrigued as they want to know about this musician. Using the musicians name also reinforces this musical genre and shows that this is all about this artist and how they're important. Using quotes with language within context which we don' understand makes consumers interested in what it is actually about, by doing so they’re more likely to read further on about the article as this is only the beginning of the article even though its on a double page spread.FontsThe font on the page is mostly displayed in Arial. This is a common font for Mojo and is used in most of it' pages. For it's small masthead the text itself it spaced out, this is interesting and it captivates the audience as none of the other text is displayed like that. The pull-quote is also in Arial, they're all in capital letters this makes it easy to see but also really reinforces that this is one of the key texts on the page. Using a the same font in bold really emphasises 'Be there now' on the page it allows the audience to see it clearer and captivating their eyes. The cover line and the article itself is displayed in lowercase letters. This shows that this for the audience to read, and not the main statement of the page. The article itself uses the same white colour however the font chosen is different and is displayed in a new times roman style. Using a different font shows that this is different from all the other text. Using this font gives the page a more traditional feel and makes it feel older reinforcing that it's like this as they're talking about an older artist. The text is displayed on a diagonal slant and gives it this edge contrasting the idea of somewhat grunge and traditional.

Page 10: Textual analysis

Who is the text aimed at?:The text it aimed towards an the older audience. This is reinforced by using a musician in the main image which is appealing to the older audience, by using this it appeals towards them as they’re likely to know who this is making them more engaged. Using the colour scheme of black and white also reinforces this older and dated idea to the magazine, by using this it allows the audience to see that it isn’t about the current music but something associated with them. Using the black and white allows the page to stand out to the audience, using this darker tone be more appealing to them as it gives a more gritty and urban feel to the page which is something the audience is interested in.What assumptions are made about the audience which are revealed in the text’s scheduling and positioning?:When we look at this page we assume the audience are more interested in the text itself rather than the layout. Using the small colour scheme in the font: white and gold it really gives this idea that the audience likes simplicity. Using the pull-quote as one of the main text we see assumes that the audience is more so interested in what the article has to say rather than the layout. Using simple colour and scheduling the text in a straight and non-diagonal manner it gives the impression that although the audience have somewhat grunge aspects to them they want it to be formulaic accordingly so that the consumers can read it easily, we assume that the audience like things to be displayed in a easy way so it’s quick and easy to read.Where and when is the audience likely to receive the text?:This double-page spread is less likely to be viewed while in the supermarket. The only time properly viewed in a supermarket would be when the audience are flicking through the different pages and the black background stands out to them interesting them. They’re more likely to view this page when the magazine is bought, or a friend of there's has the magazine. By doing so this shows that this a page in the magazine which is further in and allows the audience to really see what this magazine is presenting in their articles. Furthermore, they’re likely to view this on a night after work, or when they’re not busy. This shows that the double page spread is to pass the time, meaning it has to be interesting for the audience to view. How does this influence the form and structure of the text?:As this is an article deeper in the magazine, the pages structure has to be interesting yet appealing to show more article information. As it is a double page spread it means that the audience want to be evoked to read the article. Using large text the consumers are intrigued to this page as it links to what the article is about which is what they want to read. Using a image on one full page also captivates the audience as although they want to read the article the image makes the page more appealing and allows them to see who the focal point of this article is. By doing so it makes the audience more interested as they cannot see the musician clearly which intrigues them. How will this audience 'read' this text?:The audiences eyes will directly go top the pull-quote. This is as it is the largest font on the page and uses the gold colour to stand out against the black and white colour scheme. By doing so, the audience are already appealed into what this article is about and somewhat adds confusion as they want to know what this is about making them want to read the double page spread. Their eyes will then direct to the large black and white image, this is large and will intrigue them as they want to know about this focal character and using indirect eye contact means the audience are likely suspicious as to why he is faced away with sunglasses. The cover line about what the article is will then be read, following the article. This is as they’re close together and using a drop cap really makes the audience want to read the specific article as they’re interested as to why it is displayed there. The masthead would be the last thing to be read as it isn't eye catching to the audience and doesn’t really seem necessary for them to read. Putting it up higher than the consumers view point allows the audience to be disinterested giving this idea of what the article itself is called isn’t important for the reader.

MOJO MAGAZINE DOUBLE PAGE SPREAD ANALYSIS

Page 11: Textual analysis

Pull Quote & Headline: Q shows their main article in a different format from the previous magazine. Using a pull-quote it shows something that it is in the magazine. Using ‘I feel so alone’ is interesting as the audience are interested in what this means, using a quote allows the consumers to see that this is an interesting story making them want to know the rest. The headline is then used in ways to show us what this is talking about. The headline in ways acts like an anchorage as it gives us more information. Using the biggest text for ‘Florence’ shows that this article is about this musician this large text will captivate the audience as they will see that word first and want to read further. However, using white for all of this text could be seen negatively as although it means we see it clearly in means that some of the text doesn’t stand out from others making it difficult for some to read.

Date line, Price, Website & Barcode- Q place there barcode on the bottom of the magazine, this is interesting as it shows that this isn’t what they want the audience to see firstly. Furthermore, they place their date and price like Mojo magazine. However, in Q they make the price of the magazine in a bold text. Although it is still in small text and difficult to read it seems that they want their audience to know their price, this shows that Q magazine has confidence and means to them they feel the price is appropriate for the audience. However Q magazine additio0nally put their website url above the barcode this is an interesting idea and seems to tie in with the younger age group of 29. This shows that Q magazine is quite current and shows that their younger audience can find out more online which will appeal to them as they're more likely to do this than an older audience.

Masthead- Q Magazines masthead is different from other magazines. Most magazines have their title in the top central of the magazine, however Q magazine put it in the top left handside. This is a really interesting idea as it makes the magazine unique meaning once seen people know what magazine it is instantly. Further Q magazines masthead is just a letter and not word, this makes it easier for the audience to see and allows it to be bolder against everything else. The Masthead is above the main image, this is interesting as usually some of the masthead is covered by the image in other magazines, this allows it to be somewhat more interesting for the audience. Experimenting with this idea of a square shape the masthead is in a block, this allows it to stand out because in ways it’s unexpected making it a bold and different idea to use.

Feature article photo/Main Image- Using a close up shot of the musician: Florence it is clear that this is our focal point. The main image clearly uses this to emphasise that this artist is one of the main people featured in this magazine, furthermore using a close-up shot is interesting as it allows us to see the expression on the artists face. It is clearly expressing the artists emotions on her face, she is using this serious and quite alluring expression on her face making the consumers wonder why that is. Using this feature article photograph goes along with the heading. The character is using direct address to get the audiences attention by doing so it makes them intrigued in what this is about. This use of a close-up really adds to this idea that she is the focus of this magazine and in ways using only one image in the magazine gives it a clear cut and allows us to focus on the main thing in the magazine, it really allows us to see what this magazine is currently about using a simple photography expresses it’s simple views that this is about music and nothing else.

Sub Heading & Cover line- Using slightly smaller yet same style of text, the cover shows other things going on in the magazine. Using subheading with a variety of size of text it makes the audience intrigued. Further using ‘Gig’ in big letters shows forth more musical elements to the magazine and why it is relevant. The cover line is somewhat different in Q and in this example use bullet points to show that there is lots of information. This shows consumers that there is lots of information and really interests them. Using short information and bullet points as cover lines really changes how we view the magazine.

Layout- The cover of the magazine has a clean and bright atmosphere to it. Using the colour scheme of mainly white, blue and red. It gives this atmosphere that this is somewhat an uplifting magazine and any gender can read this as they’re not typical male nor female colours. Q uses a variety of text sizes this makes the magazine more interesting to view and makes things stand out without having to change the colour of text. Using a close-up image which is unusual for a magazine creates this really in-depth feel that this magazine is somewhat up close and personal to what our interests are.

Banner- Underneath the masthead there is text displayed underneath, this is a banner in ways this shows what the magazine represents: ‘discover great music’ this clearly shows what type of magazine genre it is a in ways shows to the consumers that this magazine is where they will find great musical discoveries. This is interesting as it simply shows a further development in what the magazine is!

Plug- Using this sticker like format, clearly this plug is showing something relevant to the magazine. Using a circle with diagonal text it captivates the consumers as nothing else on the cover shows this layout of text, this is interesting and really intrigues the audience to what exactly it is. Furthermore when we look at this we see a pull quote and subheading to show some part of the text from the magazine. This intrigues the audience as they want to know what it’s abo0ut, not having much information allows the audience to want more! It’s clear that the plug is telling the audience that there is a new column in the magazine. Using this makes us want to see what exactly this new part of the magazine is and makes it feel like we’re getting something additional in this issue of Q magazine.

Page 12: Textual analysis

Mise-en-sceneCharacters: There is only one character displayed on the front cover of the magazine, she is displayed in a close-up shot which is unusual for a font cover. Using this we can really see that this magazine is focused around this character as no background space is around her so we can clearly see nothing is important apart from this character. She is presented with a serious facial expression. This gives off a mysterious eye to the camera as we don't know what her expression is. Using direct address the musician is connected with the audience inviting them to know more about her. She is presented with bold makeup on her face and holding her face. This gives her a dramatic idea as the way she is posed isn't everyday. This represents that this character is something different and unusual and further shows the audience that Q magazine is original. Using bold makeup it quite interesting as the blue really makes the consumers look at her eyes more making the character look into the audience interesting them. This use of blue is quite cold and gives off this unhappy sense to the character making the audience wonder hwy. Further, the makeup is different from what we would expect by doing so this interests the audience as it is something different making them wonder why she is presented in this manner.Lighting: There is bright lighting on the main image of the magazine. Using a nice bright lighting allows the audience to see the character on the magazine page more, but also illuminate this idea that this is a somewhat friendly and uplifting musician shown. However, using this bright lighting to present the character is contrasted against the pull-quote 'I feel so alone' by doing so it makes the audience wonder why it is represented in a nice and happy light. Contrasting a dark article on a bright photograph is somewhat confusing but interests the consumers making them wonder why it is displayed as it. Q focuses the lighting on the whole character rather than just her face, by doing this it allows the audience to see the image clearly even though she is covered by surrounding text. Using a white light we get to see the pale characters skin. This is interesting as using this lighting makes her seem colder and not vibrant and contrasting by doing so it adds an idea that although represented in bright colours this is not a warm article and is situated by producing her in more colder aspect.

CameraworkQ uses a unique style of camerawork to portray the character. Using a close-up all we can see is the character. Using this Florence is the only item we see and there is no background colour on the cover making us focus her eyes on this character, by doing so it really intrigues us as to why Q want us to look at the character so much. Using camerawork the musician is placed at the centre of the page, by doing this it means she is the first thing we look at and makes the consumers interested into why she is presented in this manner. In the studio-based photography the character is giving the audience direct eye contact by doing so she is interesting them on a deeper level as they're engaged and it connects them to the magazine.Colour SchemeThe colour scheme for the cover is interesting, there is no background colour of the magazine. This is interesting as this is not usually the case for covers. In ways this is unique and helps the young audience of 29 more interested and they want something that will evoke them to buy it. Using a house style of red, white and the occasional blue it makes the magazine stand out. The main colour on the page is white, this stands out against the image beneath the text. By using white it emphasises what is being wrote and makes it bold. The use of this colour adds a somewhat more professional and cleaner look to the magazine cover. The occasional use of blue helps the cover be divided up by using it as a plug, or even bullet points. Using this is interesting as red it ideally Q magazine's logo colour by doing this they're showing that they want the red to stand out to the audience meaning they use a cooler colour. Using a cold blue contrasts against the red and adds different ideas to the cover. Using the blue subtly helps the page have development without making the page look over complex.LanguageThe front cover uses music language like 'gig to show that this is a music magazine, including feature of music allows the audience instantly to know what type of magazine it is knowing they will be interested in it. It uses simple and basic English language to really show the audience what is inside the magazine simply. By doing so it means the audience can really engage with what is being written. It uses one or two words in most of its headlines this is nice and short so the audience can overview it quickly. Using modern everyday celebrities like 'Skrillex' and 'Simon Cowell' it really reinforces this genre about music. By using these famous names on the cover it shows the audience that this magazine is current and update furthermore as this is a younger audience it means they will instantly know who these people are and will connect with the magazine as they're familiar with this language.FontsThe font used on the cover seems to be Dotum or Arial narrow. It seems to vary from the two fonts. The magazine uses these fonts as they're easy and simple to read. The letters are widely spread so it is easy for the audience to read. All the text presented on the page is in capital letters, this really helps give this idea of importance to the magazine showing the audience they have to know this. Using simple and easy text allows the audience to instantly read it and not think twice about the chosen font furthermore using somewhat narrow text gives a slimmer idea and makes more text be allowed to fit on the page. By using this it is represented to the audience as there is so much in this magazine that the text as to be thinner that it usually would be this is interesting as it gives a different and interesting approach to the page.

Clearly, the audience are young wants these different and interesting ideas yet old enough to appreciate the text to be in a formulaic manner. Using the Masthead as a letter in a square is interesting ass the masthead isn’t usually presented on the left hand-side of the page this allows the audience to see how this magazine is different and appeals to them. Furthermore, putting the text on the left-hand and right-hand side of the page allows Where and when is the audience likely to receive the text?:The cover will be placed in the buyers local supermarket, by doing so the audience will instantly see the magazine as they’re younger and are more likely to look at the magazine section of the supermarket. They’re likely to receive the text when browsing through typical magazines in a shopping trip, by doing so it means the audience will be looking at all types of different magazines meaning Q has to be competitive by doing so Q uses the close-up image of Florence to really engage to the audience who the focal point is. Using this type of shot is really different and is not typical of what we would usually see by doing so it interests the audience as they see this magazine as something new and different. How does this influence the form and structure of the text?:To make it stand out to the audience the text as to be set out differently compared to other magazines. The logo ‘Q’ is set on the top left hand-side of the cover above the image. This is interesting as usually the masthead is seen below the image this reinforces this unique idea as the magazine name is only a letter really intriguing the audience. Furthermore the text itself is presented either side of the image, although some would say this is normal and boring the text doesn’t have a menu strip at the bottom and text is only presented either side this is interesting as it shows that they want us to look at the focal image. This is interesting as although everything is important it shows that the character is the central focus of ht magazine and by using the text to surround her it really translates this idea that the other articles back shadow this character interesting us to wonder why that is.How will this audience 'read' this text?:The audience will firstly look at the main image of the magazine, the direct eye contact really capturing their attention and the character connecting themselves with the reader. Their eyes will then direct to the magazine logo, this is as it is the second largest piece of text on the cover. Although it gives no insight into the magazine the audience are intrigued by this letter giving the cover originality. There eyes will then be captured by the pull-quote this is one of the largest text too by doing so the audience are really intrigued as they want to know what this musician is talking about engaging them to read further into the magazine. The consumers eyes will then direct to the other articles presented on the magazine and will most likely read the names of musicians that they know and interest them. This pulls the audience in as they want to read about their favourite characters in the magazine.

Including the magazines logo ‘Q’ against the word ‘contents’ instantly allows the audience to know what this page is and why it is here on. The masthead is displayed in a black square. This is interesting as black is a bold shade and directs our eyes as the black is contrasted against the white on the page layout. Furthermore, using this masthead allows the audience know that this is Q’s contents pages and nobody else's this allows them to let there audience know that and allows it not to be copyrighted.

Dateline- The dateline on the magazine is just above the masthead. This is interesting as it shows that the date of when this magazine is currently in is more important than the actual page name. This allows the audience to know that the magazine is current with these times. Using the month and year reinforces this idea that it is a monthly magazine. Using the text in a dark grey shows that although it is above the masthead it is not as important as it is smaller and more difficult to see. By doing so they’re showing the date in a simple way as it is not what the consumers eyes are drawn to instantly.

Sub images- There are lots of pictures presented on this page, they’re presented quite small and link to different articles. By using lots of different images which seem to be live shots it adds to the idea that there is a lot in this magazine appealing to the audience as it shows them that there is more than one initial article making it more interesting. Using all the images apart from one in a square frame adds an idea that they’re all taken from an article. The use of sectioning all the different parts of the page including ‘Q Reviews’ allows the audience to view it easier. For example some stuff feels divided as the article sets a different purpose. Furthermore using this basic yet interesting shaping adds complexity but allows the audience to simply read what I being said. It is placed against a white background and this gives the page light and works well against the page numbers in different coloured bubbles. Using this is a unique wary of presenting the contents. By doing so the audience are interested in what exactly Q is about and adds complexity to the page yet not too much so the audience cannot read what is being said.

Page 15: Textual analysis

Mise-en-sceneCharacters: There are several characters displayed on this page. The main focal character uses direct address to get our attention and although is not centred in the middle gets our attention by being placed bigger than other images. By doing so it connects them to the audience and they want to know why they’re looking at them in a somewhat mysterious way. The two male characters seem to have a hint of smiling while the woman has a straight yet mysterious face. The woman is seen as the view point of the characters. She is seen to be the main triggering character by using her as the focal the audience will see who it is as they’re likely to know who she is and not the other characters. It seems these other characters are less important to the audience and we’re more captivated by the female character. Using these characters as a focal point it really shows that this magazines biggest article revolves around these characters.Costume: The main image includes the characters wearing casual clothing. This shows this idea that Rock Magazine is revolved around these characters as they’re what is attracting the consumers to this edition of the magazine.Colour SchemeThe colour scheme is quite complicated. Using the colours: black, white, blue, yellow and red it gives the page lots of colour and energy. By using this chaotic style it appeals to the audience as this interests them and they’re more into chaotic styles. The text presented isn’t long and dull for the audience. Using short and snappy use of language makes the audience be able to read it easily and be more engaged. This is effective for a front cover. The language uses lots of pull-quotes of what the musicians have said. ‘I want to be James bond.’ Using interesting quotes and using the word ‘I’ interests the audience as although they’re not using this towards the audience they feel somewhat closer to them articles and want to know what they’re speaking of.FontsIt’s unsure what magazine fonts the cover uses however they're similar to both Narkisim and Kozuka Mincho Pro EL. The main text for the headlines is all based in capital letters and is in a basic font style. The font shape is quite square and gives a somewhat futuristic and different effect. This appeals as it could be reinforcing how Rock Sound is always on the latest trends. Furthermore the use of this text is bold and really captivates the audience as it doesn’t seem easy to miss. The other text on the page uses a more traditional font and is sometimes placed in either capitals or lowercase. Mixing between these two is interesting and emphasises important parts of the cover. Using these different musicians will interest the audience as they’re likely to know who these characters are making them want to read them more. Layout- The page uses the background of red and white, this is interesting as it switches between the two colours. It seems the white side of the page presents all the contents and information within the magazine and the red connotes the most interesting and fiery articles in the magazine. There are four stars presented this is interesting as it placed near the reviews section by showing this it somewhat shows that this magazine also rates things and somewhat rates themselves as four stars. Some of the characters are wearing dark eye makeup. This gives them a somewhat grunge aspect to their personalities. By doing this it makes the audience seem more interested as to why they’re being displayed in this way.Lighting: The images use dark and bright lighting in their images. This is interesting as it seems that some images are lighter than others. By doing this it makes the audience interested and makes it seem that some stories are happy and filling whereas others are darker and mysterious. By doing so it means it is more difficult for the consumers to see the characters in images. By doing so it makes it a lot more interesting and makes us wonder what is actually their article about. Using this allows complexity in the frame and makes us focus on the darker images first and see a complete contrast of lighter colours in a different view. This shows that rock Sound has different types of articles that will be tasteful to the audience. Using this gives the magazine variety and gives the page that unique feel that they want to display.

This is quite a simple colour scheme and suggests they want the audience to focus on the text displayed rather than the layout of the page. Using the vibrant colour of red interests the audience as this is lively colour. Using this as the background for the pictures and headings including: ‘features’ gives this idea that these are the main topics. Using it as headings captures the audience attention and allows the sections of the magazine to be divides up. Using this is simple text to read however it is ore modernised as we can see it in a different way. All the text is mainly in lowercase. Using these characters in a large format makes us know that these musicians are of an importance. This interests us as we want to know more about these characters.

Banner- Underneath the masthead there is a banner which interests the audience. ‘The new sound of sacrifice.’ This is interesting as it seems that Rock Sound is referring to these musicians as this. Page 27: Textual analysis

Mise-en-sceneCharacters: There are five characters presented on this double page spread. Showing all the character on a similar view shows that no one person is the focal of this page. Making them spread across the page somewhat invades the text and interests the audience as they cannot escape the focal. Using tis imagery really interests the audience.Costume: It is quite difficult to see what the characters are wearing as they’re mostly covered by text. From what we can see the costumes seem to be quite grungy and urban. Their clothing isn’t very smart and this interests the audience as they feel they can connect with these characters. The costumes colours including red, black, grey etc. Using a mix shows that these characters break from what should be shown of them and reinforces that they’re the focal. It further shows how although there is darkness the character make items feel lighter. The use of light directs us to these characters and we’re instantly connected. Using this darkness and lightness together really creates an interesting page layout, using this it makes it unique appealing to it’s target audience.

CameraworkThere is use of a medium shot. This allows us to see all the characters clearly presented on the page and gives them a view of their top half bodies. The camera has captured these character in a ‘birds eye manner’ this is interesting as it feels that the audience are above the characters presented. Using this makes the character feels below us. Using this makes the audience feel that they have status and as to why they’re not presented in a direct view. This is interesting and makes the audience interested. Using direct address forwards this idea and makes the audience think that they know the audience have this status and using this direct address intrigues them even more. Making them look in an upward fashion makes us curious as to why we see them like this. The camerawork somewhat pan the characters. The characters are spread on both page this is effective for making the audience see the characters clearly and show them that they’re the articles focus.Colour SchemeThe article uses the colours: white, black, blue to present their page. Using the colours black and white as their main house style is interesting. These are contrasting colours when placed against each other. These colours are quire dominating and makes the audience instantly interesting. Using white against black somewhat highlights the text and makes the audience want to look at it as it is capturing for the audience. Also the use of black and white is quite basic and we expect it from a magazine page. As we expect it allows the audience to read it easily and know what is the relevant article text and what is not. Using the light blue contrasts the dark ideas of black. Using this as it’s masthead is interesting as it isn’t a colour we expect this text to be presented as. Using a cold colour shows that although the band is presented in a happy way the article itself could be colder and somewhat upsetting. The use of blue instantly draws our eyes as it is unexpected. Using this gives the page a unique twist which interests the audience and want to know why they’re presented in this manner.LanguageWhen read the language feels quite edgy and informal using terms like ‘a million miles away’ seems quite casual for us to read. It feels as if the audience aren’t really reading an important article. In ways this is quite negative as the audience feel it may lack importance, however the audience somewhat feel intrigued as it is dimple and something they would say. Using things in quotes like ‘pop-mosh’ gives it a sarcastic feel and using unprofessional terms reinforces this and gives the impression that this will be interesting for the audience. The page also uses swearing in a pull quote. This is something unexpected for the audience and they feel connected as it gives the page edge and shows that this page is uncensored and is the real stuff and not edited interesting them.FontsThe page uses ‘times new roman’ as it’s article text. This is interesting as it is a simple text and a basic one that most magazines use. By using this the audience know from previous magazines that this is the main text. This gives the page a professional view as we expect this smart formulaic text. The other text displayed on the screen seems to be either ‘all star’ or ‘varsity.’ These feel quite interesting as they give off a modern effect against the other text. Using this text makes the audience look at this text as focal point. Using this font with an outline in the masthead instantly interests the audience. This text is quite unique and gives the text something extra. By using this unexpected text gives the article itself an interesting feel as if there is something different and odd about this article. This intrigues Rock Sounds audience as they want something different to intrigue them to read it.
