Welcome to the Contemporary Textiles Fair 2018! This year brings you 78 fabulous stands featuring the best contemporary textiles in the UK. Unique in our focus on textile artists and makers, unencumbered by suppliers and other craft disciplines, our exhibitors show and sell a vast range of textile art, from needle-felted wool portraiture, to silk-knitted garments, stitched mixed media canvases, to naturally dyed clothing. Our events programme for 2018 has the theme of Eco Textiles and Sustainability. An increasingly important subject in the textile world; and a focus that many emerging and practising artists and designers have taken on board as part of their own ethos. Ecology in relation to textiles is a broad subject; from taking care where and how raw materials are sourced, to rejecting the use of man-made fibres and dyes. Artists have started taking this a step further by taking these considerations into their processes and imbuing their work with these values.

This year at the Contemporary Textiles Fair we are

celebrating this movement within

the textile art world with a range of special exhibitions, talks and workshops.

ExhibitionsLiminal Objects & Sluice Creek Cloths by Debbie Lyddonexhibition in the Bell Room & Main Hall Local artist Debbie Lyddon has been invited back to the Contemporary Textiles Fair, this year to exhibit her work inspired by the coast, and what she notices when walking through the landscape. Lyddon’s of-ten sculptural, pieces evoke moody skies and sweeping scenery, without becoming a direct representation of a particular vista. Her exper-imentation with non-traditional materials such as bitumen and dried out sea salt, alongside her main staple; cloth, introduces an element of conscious, process-based decision making; informed by natural environment.

Journey ‘d3ǝ :niby Ross Beltonan installation in the grounds of the arts centre• an act of travelling from one place to another • a long and often difficult process of personal change and development.“An estimated 258 million people worldwide don’t live in the country of their birth. What started off as a personal journey as an artist has become much more, making me look at journeys, people on the move and migration. This new textile installation considers both meanings: the rust scarring the cloth, like migration trails across the globe, or personal obstacles to overcome; the cloth meandering through space, traversing the geography of the personal.” Media: Rusted and naturally dyed recycled hotel sheets, fencing pins, cotton twill tape. Fencing pins kindly sponsored by Travis Perkins on Worton Road.

Sea & Skyby IFA Membersexhibition in the entrance Sea and Sky is an International Feltmak-ers Association exhibition, displaying their members’ feltmaking skills and creativity on the theme of Sea & Sky. The aim of the show is to celebrate the diversity of contemporary feltmaking within a theme. Sea & Sky has al-ready toured to the Knitting & Stitching Show in Alexandra Palace in London, and The Big Textiles Fair in Leicester.

Launching this year is Raw Fibres; a section supporting and showcasing a selection of the best new UK textile artists. Raw Fibres is a platform for graduates, students, and fledgling maker-businesses to promote and sell their work to collectors, enthusiasts, and local visitors alike. Allowing them space to launch their work into the textile art world, meet fellow artists and designers, and giving them advice and encouragement to move their practice forward. For the inaugural year the fair has selected 4 artists; Laura Marriott is the current Embroiderers’ Guild 18-30 Scholar. Her colourful designs are sold as brooches, patches and made into other jewellery pieces; all inspired by her travels, from crowded British towns to remote villages in Botswana. Bryn Pratt-Boyden lives locally, as a designer-maker who graduated from Kingston University with an MA in 2016. His interests currently lie with indigo dyeing and the Japanese mending technique; Boro, to make, fix and create garments, bags and other textile items. Emily Sladen is influenced heavily by the wild and rugged environment of her home on St Agnes, one of the Isles of Scilly. All of her work is made from recycled fabrics and yarn waste; sustainability being important to her and her local community. Her mixed media embroidery is used on lampshades as well as framed artworks. And Catherine Jackson who has just completed her first year as a self-employed artist. Catherine’s main focus is on embroidery and needle felting, and finds using natural and locally sourced materials important in her work.
