Justification for Addition or Change:A demonstrated knowledge and working understanding of basic statistical techniques and methods has become a critical elementfor students in many disciplines including business, engineering, health sciences and social sciences. We are adding this course aspart of an undergraduate minor in statistics, which will serve as a valuable asset for most undergraduate majors and their careeropportunities.The teaching load generated by the new course to be managed by adjusting the rotating schedule for the new courses as well asexisting courses in the curriculum.

Justification for Addition or Change:This course is designed to complement PHIL 1033, Introduction to Philosophy. Many students are transferring to TWU havingalready taken an introduction to philosophy course, and therefore we have seen a slight decline in enrollment in that course. Manystudents avoid PHIL 2033 (Logic and Critical Thinking) unless required by their major; our hope is that this new course will catchthese students by giving them a lower-division philosophy course with a more attractive topic. Moreover, the addition of this coursewill add to the philosophy minor at TWU and give students minoring in philosophy more options in setting their schedule. Making iteasier to minor in philosophy important due to changes in financial aid that require courses fit a degree plan to be funded. We aresubmitting this course for consideration to the core curriculum wellness component.Initially this course will be offered only in the fall semester and only one section, replacing one section of PHIL 1033 or PHIL 2033. Weoffer at least four sections of PHIL 1033 during the fall and spring semesters (combined) and about eight sections of PHIL 2033. Itwill not cost us more money to teach the course.The course topic was chosen on the basis of conversations with faculty and students and is in line with core values of the TWUstrategic plan. The course topic will "help students find meaning and purpose" and "foster the development of the whole person."

Justification for Addition or Change:This is the third of the research course sequence for the new nursing PhD curriculum. Course utilizes knowledge gained fromthe Quantitative Nursing Research and the Qualitative Nursing Research course that will guide development of a viable researchproposal. Individual student proposals will be refined to facilitate future dissertation work.**Note: Doesn’t the development of the research proposal occur typically in the first 3 SCH of the dissertation? Why this additionalcourse? – this course assists the student in conducting a pilot study in the final feasibility course prior to enrolling in the dissertationcourses. We found that students who prepared a proposal and conducted a pilot or feasibility study of the proposed dissertationresearch enroll in fewer dissertation courses and finish the program in a shorter period – thereby decreasing the time to graduation.Also, because this is a required individual studies course, the student can work with the proposed dissertation chair on a one to onebasis developing a stronger more effective working relationship prior to enrolling a dissertation course.This additional justification information is in response to Dr. Claire Sahlin’s comment of October 24 in the CIM System. The NursingResearch Proposal Development course is 1 of 8 new courses in the Proposed PhD Nursing Science curriculum concurrently underreview by the Graduate School. With the goal of decreasing time to graduation, the intent of this course is to assist the student toidentify and refine a specific topic of study, master the appropriate methodology to collect and analyze data, and seek grant fundingto support associated costs of the proposed research. This course, Nursing Research Proposal Development, is followed by theNursing Research Feasibility Practicum which allows the student to pilot test some aspect of the proposed plan for dissertationresearch. We have found that following this rigorous approach of student preparation PRIOR to enrolling dissertation coursesdecreases the number of semesters in which the student must enroll in dissertation, shortens the time to graduation, and often leadsto availability of small grant funding to support the project. Also, because this is a required individual studies course, the student can
