Texas Tech will open its 24th season of softball Thursday afternoon when the Red Raiders face New Mexico State in a 3 p.m. CT first pitch at the NMSU Softball Complex. Tech will complete its Opening Day doubleheader by facing Mon- tana later in the evening for a 7 p.m. CT start. The schedule change was due to problems in Montana’s travel itinerary. Texas Tech will be taking part in the season-opening Ho- tel Encanto Classic that is hosted annually by New Mexico State. This is the first time in program history where the Red Raiders have opened a season in Las Cruces, N.M. Texas Tech will be making its debut under first-year head coach Adrian Gregory. The seventh head coach in program history, Gregory arrives at Texas Tech after spending the past four seasons as an assistant coach at Sam Houston State. Adrian Gregory will be looking to become the fourth Texas Tech head coach to win their debut, joining Bobby Reeves (2001), Amy Suiter (2009) and Shanon Hays (2010). TexasTech’s second game of the weekend tournament will be against a Montana program that is entering its first season of existence. The Grizzlies will be playing their first game in program history against the Red Raiders. The Red Raiders will be looking to avenge a season-open- ing loss from a year ago when Texas Tech fell to Akron, 4-3, at the Lion Classic hosted by Southeastern Louisiana. Texas Tech heads into Thursday evening with a 10-9 over- all record all-time in season openers thanks in part to wins in four of the past five season openers. Cara Custer heads into this weekend needing just one more victory to move into sole possession of second place all-time in the Texas Tech record book. The senior has re- corded 51 wins in three seasons which is tied currently with Ashly Jacobs (2007-10).
