EXECUTIVE SUMMARYTexas ranked second in the nation for relocation activity in 2017, according to the Texas Relocation Report released today by Texas REALTORS®, which analyzes the latest migration data from the U.S. Census Bureau and U-Haul.
Texas remained a hotbed of relocation activity in 2017 due in part to our diverse job opportunities, record-breaking housing market and booming economy. This is the fifth year in a row that Texas has gained more than 500,000 new residents from out of state and we anticipate that trend will continue in the coming years.
According to the report, Texas welcomed 524,511 new residents in 2017. This is less than the number of out-of-state residents who moved to Texas in 2016 (531,996). The net gain of out-of-state residents in Texas in 2017 fell from 87,656 in 2016 to 57,173 residents in 2017.
Residents moving to Texas from outside of the United States made up nearly half of the total inflow of residents. Among U.S. states, the highest number of new Texans relocated from California (63,175), Florida (33,740), Louisiana (28,700), Illinois (26,214) and New York (20,644).
Texas ranked third in the United States for the number of residents moving out of state (467,338) in 2017. The most popular out-of-state relocation destinations for Texans were California (40,999), Oklahoma (32,430), Florida (31,625), Colorado (25,212) and Louisiana (17,674).
At the metropolitan statistical area (MSA) level, Los Angeles-Long Beach-Anaheim, New York-Newark-Jersey City and Chicago-Naperville-Elgin produced the highest volume of residents relocating to Texas. The Dallas-Fort Worth-Arlington MSA recorded the highest number of incoming residents from out-of-state (230,118), followed by Houston-The Woodlands-Sugar Land (203,279).
At the county level, Harris County (Houston) led the state with a net gain of 83,282 residents relocating from out of state, but four of the top 10 counties with the highest net gain of out-of-state residents were in North Texas (Dallas, Tarrant, Collin and Denton counties). Three of the top 10 counties were located in the Gulf Coast.
As more residents and businesses choose to put down roots in Texas, we need to preserve our favorable conditions to buy, sell, rent and own real estate here. As always, Texas REALTORS® will take the lead in advocating for policies at the state Capitol and in our communities that support our increasing population and strong economy.

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Texas continues to be one of the most popular states in the nation for relocation activity. In 2016, Texas ranked second in the U.S. for incoming residents, ahead of California and just behind Florida, according to the latest Texas Relocation Report released by the Texas Association of REALTORS®. This is the fourth consecutive year that Texas added more than 500,000 new residents from out of state. Texas welcomed 531,996 new residents, a net gain of 87,656 residents this reporting period. Approximately 55 percent of the incoming Texas residents relocated from other U.S. states, with California leading, followed by Florida, Oklahoma, Louisiana, and Illinois. Texas ranked third in the nation for number of residents moving out of state (444,340); however, fewer people moved from Texas to other states in this reporting period than the previous report. The states attracting the highest numbers of people moving out of Texas were California, Florida, Oklahoma, Louisiana, and Colorado. At the metropolitan statistical area (MSA) level, Los Angeles-Long-Beach-Anaheim, New York-Newark-Jersey City, and Chicago-Naperville-Elgin were responsible for the largest numbers of residents relocating to the four major Texas MSAs from out of state. The Houston-The Woodlands-Sugar Land MSA led the state with the highest number of net new residents from out of state, followed by Dallas-Fort Worth-Arlington, Austin-Round Rock, and San Antonio-New Braunfels.
TEXAS RELOCATION REPORT | 2018 EDITION
STATEWIDE RELOCATION STATEWIDE RELOCATION Texas remains a high-demand relocation destination, according to the latest national and statewide migration data from the U.S. Census Bureau. Texas experienced a net gain of 87,656 residents this reporting period despite a slight decrease in the total number of incoming residents from out of state. The total number of residents moving to Texas outpaced the number moving away. There was a slight decline in resident outflows from Texas compared to the previous reporting period. Not only has the Lone Star State proven to be a popular destination within the U.S. but from abroad as well. Of the 531,996 new Texas residents, 44.1 percent were international migrants. Within the U.S., California contributed the largest number of new Texas residents, with nearly 70,000 people. This is more than double the number of residents coming from Florida, which was responsible for the second-largest influx at just over 30,000 residents. California was also the most popular destination for outgoing Texas residents, followed by Florida, Oklahoma, Louisiana, and Colorado.
TEXAS RELOCATION REPORT | 2018 EDITION
Texas #1 Texas was ranked as U-Haul’s No. 1 “Growth State” during this reporting period.

A STATE-TO-STATE LOOK at TEXAS, CALIFORNIA, FLORIDA, NEW YORK and ILLINOIS The most populated U.S. states alongside Texas—California, Florida, New York, and Illinois— also saw some of the highest out-of-state inflow and outflow, and in many cases, migration to and from Texas. The population gap between California (the most populous state in the nation) continued to narrow during this reporting period as Texas and Florida experienced net gains in residents from out of state, while California saw a year-over-year net loss. Florida, which ranks third in population after Texas, once again led the nation in total number of residents gained from out of state, and similar to Texas, saw fewer residents leave the state than the previous report. The increase in residents positioned the Sunshine State as the frontrunner in net growth, followed by Texas. Florida was also responsible for the second-largest number of residents migrating to Texas and attracted the second-largest number of outgoing residents from Texas. California ranked first in the amount of residents leaving the state during this reporting period. Part of that migration is the 69,945 residents who relocated from California to Texas, the largest number of residents absorbed by Texas from another U.S. state. That is almost double the number of Texans who relocated to California during the same period.
As the fourth and fifth most populated states in the U.S., respectively, New York and Illinois continued to see higher numbers of residents leaving than entering the states.

STATEWIDE RELOCATION
COUNTY-LEVEL RELOCATION The four major Texas metropolitan statistical areas (MSAs) continued to attract people from out of state. Echoing the previous reporting period, the Houston, Dallas, San Antonio and Austin areas contained nine of the 10 Texas counties that reported the highest gains in residents relocating from outside of Texas. Harris County and Dallas County led the state in out-of-state resident gains.

METRO-LEVEL RELOCATION The three largest out-of-state metros for residents moving to the four largest metros in Texas were Los Angeles, New York, and Chicago. Texas residents continued to relocate from one Texas MSA to another. While migration from out of state accounted for a significant percentage of the growth of the Houston, Dallas, Austin and San Antonio areas, it was the in-state population exchange among these Texas MSAs that made up the largest share of movement reported in the state’s most populous areas.

Executive Summary Texas continues to be a high-demand destination for incoming residents across the United States, according to the Texas Relocation Report released by the Texas Association of Realtors. Based on state-to-state, county-to-county and city-to-city data from the U.S. Census Bureau, Texas ranked second in the nation for relocation activity in 2015. Texas experienced a net gain of out-of-state residents in 2015, with 107,689 more people moving to Texas than Texas residents moving out of state. This is a 4 percent increase in the net gain of Texas residents from 2014 (103,465 residents).
The total number of residents moving to Texas from out of state in 2015 increased 2.8 percent year-over-year to 553,032 incoming residents. The highest number of new Texans came from California (65,546), followed by Florida (33,670), Louisiana (31,044), New York (26,287) and Oklahoma (25,555).
Texas once again ranked third in the nation for number of residents moving out of state (445,343) in 2015. The most popular out-of-state relocation destinations for Texans were California (41,713), Florida (29,706), Oklahoma (28,642), Colorado (25,268), and Louisiana (19,863).
This is the first Texas Relocation Report to feature comparative relocation data by Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA).
