A God Thing: The Making of Driven Elite Health and Fitness

Perfecting Character Since 1991Texas Isshinryu Karate Kai

“In life, it is all up to you what you will do.”

Sensei Myers explained that after meeting Donald Driver at a gym. Donald started

talking about how he to was planning to open his own gym.

Light Bulb!!!!!Sensei Myers asked, “Hey, would you be interested in a physician being a part of the

new fitness center”? Donald then meets with John and after hours of talking, getting to

know each other, talking about their passion for fitness and health, John Myers’

“DREAM JOB” was born.

According to Sensei Myers, “It was a God thing”! He put us all in the right place at the

right time.”

Combining Health and Fitness under one roof makes Driven Elite a one-stop-shopping

location for all fitness levels. Along with open areas, Driven Elite offers a wide range

of fitness from yoga to spinning, weight-lifting, and personal training for all ages and

all under the guidance of fitness trainers and medical personnel. The goal for all

members of the center is to assure proper training and nutrition to build and maintain

strong and healthy lifestyles.

In addition to having a physician on site, the center has a nutritionist and physical

therapist. It also houses a Cryo Machine which is a cold chamber to help relieve

muscle pain, sprains and swelling of soft tissue; and a DXA Machine that tells the

body’s composition of muscle and fat, and is the most validated technique for assessing

bone and mineral density, per the World Health Organization. All testing is at the

Grapevine location but both locations have fitness

and clinic specialties.

An Angel Among Us

Perfecting Character Since 1991Texas Isshinryu Karate Kai

“In life, it is all up to you what you will do.”

If you ever get annoyed at your busy schedule and can’t seem to fit in a hair appointment, stop and think about those who give so much of themselves like Sensei Tracey Dickey. For over four years, Sensei Dickey has been volunteering at Hopes Door and New Beginnings and recently at Emily’s Place helping women and children with self-defense techniques. With Sensei’s karate training, she realized that she would like to give back to a community of women and children who are in dire situations.“I want to help and give back. It’s something that’s close to my heart,” says Sensei.Hopes Door is an emergency shelter that allows women and children to stay up to three months. This non-profit organization helps families escape and heal from domestic abuse. After that time, if the women still need continued attention in creating a better life, the next step would be Emily’s Place, a shelter allowing residency for up to two years. Here the residents receive practical training, education to establish stability in their lives and in the choices they make to move forward.

“Some of the ladies want to learn, unfortunately, sometimes they have been traumatized to the point where they do not want to be touched. And most of these traumas are choking attacks. I often ask Hanshi, who is so helpful on how to handle different situations such as being chocked on a hard floor or on a soft bed,” says Sensei.Sensei Dickey did mention that one of these women who took her self- defense class, began feeling more self assured while using public transportation. She carried herself with more confidence and felt safer.

Sensei also teaches classes at such locations as churches and schools. She never asks for payment, but instead, asks for donations for these two shelters. To date, Sensei has collected thousands of dollars for these non-profit centers.Sensei’s one major love, however, is her family, She and her husband, Kurt, have been married since 1988 and have three boys –Carson, Chris and Trey.

While being interviewed, Sensei was cooking dinner for her family before heading out to karate class. Sensei Dickey also has three grandchildren – Tristen and Keegan who play soccer, and Kaleigh who swims on the Plano East swim team with Trey. This native Grand Rapids, Michigan, Angel came to Texas by way of Wyatt’s Cafeteria who hired her as their manager right out of college. We are blessed that she accepted the position and is part of our family!

Women’s Martial Arts Symposium

Perfecting Character Since 1991Texas Isshinryu Karate Kai

“In life, it is all up to you what you will do.”

In January, the Partnership of Women Martial Arts (POWMA) presented a Women’s Martial Arts Symposium in Tampa, FL. POWMA wanted to provide opportunities for women martial artists to train with female instructors and masters of many different arts; to expand their horizons in the process of that training; and develop friendships along the way.At least 20 TIKK women joined other schools at Ingram’s Pro Karate Center. Classes were held all day Saturday starting with a warm-up drill instructed by Elaine Correa, certified trainer and a member of the American Council on Exercise.

Kyoshi Maria Kristensen joined the panel of instructors with classes in Kata Bunkai Collaboration and Exchange, and Kumite Drills. These highly energized classes inspired strong women to spar with strong women honing in on new and higher level techniques.Hachi-Dan Diane Ortenzio-Cooling held classes in Ten Martial Maxims focusing on strategies when dealing with an attacker. Knife move classes were given by Hanshi-Dan Cindy Ingram; The “No” with Attitude classes were headed by San-Dan Dee Holmes-Norman.The overwhelming success of the symposium has encouraged a 2020 Symposium. For more information like Facebook page: https:222.facebook.com/womensMAsymposium/

Know Your Black Belts

November 9, 2018 was an evening that was set in motion almost twelve years prior. In August 2006, a young man joined TIKK. He may have known that this kai was different; that here in TIKK, joining our kai was joining our family. Family he got. In November of that same year, a young woman joined the TIKK family. Family she got. These two began seeing each other at kai events and during training and their curiosity grew. They had their first date in January of 2013, and on November 26, 2015, he asked her to become his wife. The love, honesty, humor, and deep respect that exits between them is evident to all those around them. Congratulations, Mrs. Sensei Blommaert and Mr. Sensei Blommaert on finding each other! May you forever cherish your journey through life together!

As your training grows, so does your need for focus. The time spend in class with your instructorsneeds to be with an open mind to be able tolearn.
