TABC MEMBERSHIP

2019-2020

NOVEMBER 20, 2019

TABC in association with the Texas Athletic Directors Association is again offering complimentary membership to Texas Athletic Directors, Principals and Superintendents. Many of these people are former coach-es and friends of basketball. We welcome them and would like their in-put on how we can help their basketball programs. If your administrators would like to join TABC, all we need is their e-mail address so they can receive our newsletter and a mailing address where we can send their membership card. Please share this information with administrators. We would like to say welcome to those who have already joined. We appre-ciate your support.

(Continued from pg. 1)

By doubling our membership, we can not only provide more for our members and basketball lovers throughout the state, but we can keep down the cost to coaches like you for our membership, clinic and camps. It is really not fair for YOU to have to pay higher fees to help sustain TABC’s level of commitment just be-cause other coaches won’t spend $35 to support basketball statewide. Feel free to share this newsletter with someone who is not currently a member and show them how easy it is to simply go to our web site at www.tabchoops.org and take five minutes to join us in helping make Texas basketball the best in the nation.

Coaches Directories Have Been Sent

The first edition of the TABC Head Coaches Directory has been sent to all members via e-mail. The directory included every Texas high school head basketball coach who was a member of TABC as of October 20, 2019. We will send out two more editions (one in January and the final edition in March) and include all head coaches who have joined at that point. Please let us know if we need to make any corrections or if any of your information has changed. Please e-mail the TABC office at [email protected] or call the office at (281) 313-8222.

It is not too soon to start making plans for next June’s TABC Camp of Champs. Don’t get left out by planning too late. Check the camp dates on the calendar in each issue of the Roundball Roundup and go the TABC web site [email protected] and click on the CAMP link to see the 2020 brochure.

People , P laces and Things Argyle’s girls will be gunning for their sixth consecutive state championship and seventh straight appear-ance in the title game. Two other teams have won five in a row, Nazareth (1977-82) and Brock (2009-13). Both stumbled going for six so the Eagles of Coach Chance Westmorland could make history and they are loaded with four starters returning, including the state tournament MVP. As if that weren’t enough, Argyle returns the previous year’s state tournament MVP who was injured last year. Coach Leslie Broadhurst is beginning his 32nd season coaching the Canyon Randall boys. The veteran coach served as TABC president during the 1995-96 season and by then he had put in 9 years with the Raiders. After serving as an assistant for two years at Lubbock HS and three more at Borger, Coach Broadhurst was head coach at Morton for one season before opening Randall. Amarillo’s girls will be going for a Three-Peat in class 5A as Jeff Williams’ Sandies will build around the two time district MVP to try to complete a third consecutive undefeated district championship and improve on last year’s 37-4 season record. Ten players experienced Amarillo’s title run last year. Last year Boerne Champion’s boys were 25-11 district runner up in 26-5A. But there is optimism in this tradition rich program as Coach Chris Adamek returns eight players who combined to make 346 three pointers a year ago. Known for developing teams that utilize the trey to the max at SA Harlandale and now at Champi-on, Coach Adamek will again give the Chargers the green light. District 26-5A is also the home of the final four title game runner up and reigning district champ. The Wagner Thunderbirds of Coach Rodney Clark were 34-6 and 16-0 last year and they return 14 players from that roster, three of whom were all district selections. They are hungry for a state title to go with another dis-trict championship. In their debut season the SA Harlan girls got off to a good start going 24-9 and 14-2 in district 28-5A. Vet-eran coach Terry Barton welcomes back most of that district championship squad including the district MVP and two other all district performers with the goal of another district championship and to advance in the playoffs. Don’t bet against the Lady Hawks. Like last year, district 28-1A has four ranked boys’ teams, even though only three will make the playoffs in class 1A. A quick review of last year shows why. LaPoynor (Dean Nuckolls) was first, Neches (Randy Snid-er) second and Oakwood (Michael Ostlund) and Laneville (Eddie Walker) tied for third forcing a playoff. Oakwood not only won the play in game but worked through the playoffs beating both of their district rivals and making the final four. Other than Tracy Kinkaid taking over the head coaching duties at Laneville, expect the same dogfight for district and region IV representation. Many teams would love to play in the state championship game. The girls from Dodd City are proud to have played in that game for the past three years but Alex Stephenson’s team has plans to change the outcome this season. They have lost all three to Nazareth and four all state players return from last year’s 34-4 silver medal winner and believe they have the firepower to make that change. Meanwhile, Nazareth has no plans to change anything. Coach Eric Schilling must replace four starters from that 32-6 state champ but the Swiftettes are the 1A preseason favorite. Last year was Naz’s 23rd state championship which is a national record and they are planning to bring home number 24 in March. Before they can get another shot at the championship game, they will receive resistance from their own region in the form of Ropes. Last year Naz blew out Ropes in the regional tournament but all the Lady Eagles are back and haven’t forgotten. Since then they hired a state champion coach in Leland Bearden, who won back to back titles at Smyer in 2009 and 2010. Stay tuned. Coach David Schmitt at Shelbyville (22-2A) led his team to the 2A state title a year ago and the Dragons are looking to repeat. They were 39-3 last year and graduated only 4 team members but, they return four start-ers two of whom were all state and all state tournament. Nice way to start a squad. (Continued on page 5)

TABC Roundball Roundup—Page 4

People , P laces and Things (Continued from page 4) In district 10-6A the girls from Garland Sachse are shooting for their third consecutive undefeated district championship. Coach Donna McCullough’s Lady Mustangs return three starters from a 32-5 champ and all three were first team all-district, one was district MVP. San Antonio Cole boys were 34-6 last year making the final four in class 2A after going 14-0 in district 26. Coach Noe Cantu returns four starters including the district MVP and two more first team all-district players. By the way, one of the returning stars stands 6’10 unless he grew some over the summer. Coaches have contacted the TABC office on the whereabouts of past president Danny Henderson. After over 30 years of coaching at Liberty Hill, Peaster, Duncanville, Flower Mound Marcus and several stops as a college assistant coach he retired to Austin in 2018 and was employed by a homebuilder. We are happy to an-nounce that Danny is back in coaching at Maypearl HS, just south of the Metroplex. The Panthers were a 25-11 playoff team in district 17-3A last season. Coach Henderson produced back to back state champions at Peaster (1999 & 2000) and Marcus (2011 & 2012). Welcome back Danny. On November 14th Spring Branch ISD honored Don Coleman with the unveiling of a life-size bronze statue of him in the lobby of the Spring Branch Coliseum that already bears his name. The event was well attended by many former players, administrators and coaches. Coach Coleman led the Mustangs for 30 years winning 893 games and taking four teams to the state tournament. His 1966 Memorial team were state champions. Don was TABC president in 1987-88 and the TABC boys Outstanding Coach Award is named for him. When you enter the 5,000 seat coliseum next to Tully Stadium, Don is the first thing you see, still urging his teams on to excellence. The Coldspring Oakhurst boys return four starters and eight lettermen from a regional tournament team. Coach Greg Devers has led the Trojans to back to back undefeated championships in district 23-3A. He will merge the varsity returnees with players from an 18-0 JV and strive for a district three-peat and improve on a 35-3 season. Royse city’s girls set a school record with 32 wins a year ago. District 15-5A and region II need to beware as the bi district champs of coach Dallas Bookout welcome back four starters including the district MVP and two other all district performers working to advance farther and set another school record. The Hidalgo boys will be after their 19th consecutive playoff appearance and they bring back the district MVP from a 31-5 team. Port Isabel plays in the same district and they set a school record with 27 wins and return four of their top 6 players. Both will be fighting for the district championship in 32-4A. Gus Sanchez leads Hidalgo and Mike Hazelton is the boss at Port Isabel. Last year Matt Garrett of Mount Pleasant Chapel Hill lived every coach’s dream with a perfect 37-0 state championship in 3A girls. But, the dream lives on as the Red Devils lost only one player to graduation and return two all-state tournament performers one of which was the MVP. It is no surprise they start the season as the # 1 team in class 3A. Fort Bend Ridge Point was an undefeated district champion in district 20-6A girls. Coach Michael Vitek returns all but three players and the Lady Panthers plan to improve on last year’s 31-5 bi-district champ. Senior guard Bray Bush (5’8) of Silsbee boys broke the school scoring record in the season opener Novem-ber 15. The four-year letterman had 65 points to go with 5 rebounds, 6 assists and 5 steals in a 96-92 loss to LaMarque. Joe Sigler coaches Silsbee and Kevin Wilcox is the LaMarque coach. Both are preseason top 25 teams and are the favorites to win their district championships. As the season progresses be sure to send us your outstanding achievements. Milestones, winning streaks, outstanding player stats are all of interest no matter what class or gender. We can’t share them with our mem-bership unless you send them in so don’t be shy. TABC presents Milestone Awards to Texas coaches who reach their 300th varsity win

and each multiple of 100 thereafter. If you reach one of those milestones during the sea-

son, please let TABC know immediately so that we can order your plaque. Plaques com-

memorating 300 and 400 wins can be picked up at the TABC clinic or it will be mailed to

you. Plaques for 500 and subsequent milestones are presented during a halftime ceremo-

ny at the UIL state tournaments. We must send a list of all coaches who will participate

in that ceremony by February 1, so please don’t wait until after your season is over to let

us know about your achievement. Please e-mail TABC at [email protected] when you

reach your 300th, 400th, 500th and subsequent century marks.

Hoops for Hope - Texas Style TABC would again like to encourage our members to send us any news on activities in

which your teams participate involving raising funds in the fight against cancer and other dis-

eases or this season to raise funds for the victims of hurricane Harvey. We have called our co-

ordinated effort Hoops for Hope – Texas Style in order to include the many causes for which

you raise money. Many schools have hosted fundraisers to provide assistance for, or in honor

of, local teachers, coaches, students or residents. Some have mirrored the NCAA Coaches vs.

Cancer efforts where both opposing coaches wear basketball shoes during their game. Others

have hosted “Pink Out” events which have raised funds for “The Cure.” This season, many are

adopting a school that was hard hit by the flooding along the Texas coast. Please send TABC

news and pictures you have from your events during the season. They serve to give you and

your team recognition for your efforts and also to give others ideas on how they might be able

to help as well. Keep up the good work and let us hear about it.

State Rankings Info and Procedures

The state rankings will be updated on the TABC web site every Monday through the end of the regular sea-son and are also sent to media outlets via the Associated Press. TABC ranks the top 25 teams in each UIL class and the top 10 teams in each private school class. That is a total of 440 boys and girls teams that are rec-ognized in the rankings each week. The rankings are based on the information we have gathered from coaches around the state. Our goal with the UIL schools is to have the four teams that will reach the state tournament ranked in the top ten and to have the sixteen teams that will make the regional tournaments ranked in the top 25. We need your help to ensure we have as much information on which to base the rankings as possible. If your team is ranked, please send in your weekly results including opponents and scores. If your team is not ranked but you feel they deserve to be, please send in your season results to date including opponents and scores.
