August 2013 – SPECIAL EDITION
CCMGA 10th Annual Fall Fundraiser
article by Dawn Oldfield, Public Relations Coordinator photos and logo courtesy of CCMGA Bulb Committee
“A host of golden daffodils, besides the lake, beneath the trees, fluttering and dancing in the breeze.”
— William Wordsworth
It is hard to imagine with recent temperatures soaring well into the 100’s that the golden days and crisp nights of autumn are right around the corner. And soon after that, the long, dark days of winter follow. Gardeners will soon be longing for the hues of spring against the bare ground of the winter garden.
Gardeners who have patiently waited out winter will be rewarded with some of spring’s earliest bloomers…bulbs. A flourish of crocus, narcissus, or tulips is a welcome sight and amicable companions to emerging perennials. If only those gardeners had planted bulbs in the fall... Collin County Master Gardeners to the rescue! The CCMGA is preparing for our 10th Annual Fall Fundraiser: Bulb and Perennial Mart.
— continued on page 2
The Garden Wise Gazette is published six times a year, providing information applicable to the upcoming season. The September/October issue will be released on September 1, 2013.

The fundraiser has a new twist this year. Tried and true heirloom and naturalizing bulbs will be available by preorder only from August 1-31, with the event to be concluded with a Bulb and Perennial Mart on Saturday, October 5th at Myers Park and Event Center in McKinney, Texas. Attendees will have an opportunity to learn about bulbs and perennials, as well as tour the research and demonstration gardens.
During the Bulb and Perennial Mart event, CCMGA will be selling the fabulous perennials that are doing so well in the trial gardens at Myers Park along with a mixture of additional spring/summer/fall blooming bulbs, including lovely new tulips, narcissi, lilies and more. These bulbs are those that will reward gardeners with a beautiful display that will 3

thrive – and sometimes multiply – in our difficult soils and climate extremes. Many of these bulbs are not available in local nurseries.
The color palette is a varied one, featuring flowers in pastels and bright shades of white, blue, yellow, red and bi-color. Choose one or select a few, but you’ll be tempted to take them all home! These are the ten becoming bloomers for sale during this year’s pre-sale event.
• Narcissi Precocious • Narcissi Golden Bells • Narcissi Cheerfulness • Tulipa clusiana Tubergens • Gem • Narcissi Cassata • Ipheion Rolf Fiedler • Narcissi Tete-a-Tete • Muscari armeniancum • Allium cowanii • Leucojum aestivum • Gravetye Giant
3
4The pre-sale and Bulb and Perennial Mart is open to everyone. Master Gardeners, family, friends and neighbors are welcome to participate. A copy of the color brochure, description of bulbs available for sale and an order form are available in this issue of the Garden Wise Gazette, and are also available for downloading at the CCMGA website:
www.ccmgatx.org
Orders for the pre-sale bulbs must be accompanied by a check payable to CCMGA and must be received by August 31, 2013. Mail orders to:
Diane Kufert, 12554 Tealsky Dr. Frisco, TX 75033
Visa and Mastercard will be accepted for online orders only.
About the Author: Dawn Oldfield is a class of 2004 Collin County Master Gardener, our group’s public relations coordinator, and is passionate about roses, water conservation and traveling the gardens of the world.
