Dear all,In our Tewa year of activities and program we are all busy with the mindfulness of hope. We look towards new opportunities to grow and to demonstrate our goals and objectives.

In the up-coming time we are seeking to replicate our working model in our volunteer, fund raising and in grant making program. We will be reaching out to our present and to our expanding network of women program to encourage philanthropy in our everyday lives and in our communities.

I take this opportunity to laud our donors and appreciate our staffs and members working each day for the progress of our goals.

Let us join in hope for the better days to come. We seek a hope in which our expressions, our needs, our opportunities will be able to find a solid environment for the future. We need to join in the effort for making a better Nepal.

As Tewa collaborates with national and regional and international sisters we will gain in our wisdom and strength and courage. May each and all feel the spirit of Tewa in your lives.

With warm regards and best wishes, Maggie Shah

Message from President

Message from Co-coordinatorsDear Friends,We are very happy to share with you this report. Through this report we would also like to thank our donors, volunteers, allies and well-wishers for your support, interest and belief in Tewa’s work.

After conducting the Strategic planning and Organizational Development audit exercises in previous years we are now embarking into new, interesting and challenging activities in the coming year. One of them is the Tewa model adaptation initiative. This activity we believe will enable others to learn from Tewa’s values, experience about philanthropy for women’s empowerment. That we believe will led to equitable justice and peace in community.

Our past success is due to your support and this also shows your confidence in our work and reflects the dedication and hard work of the Tewa team. We would like to conclude with the renewed hope and confidence that we will be blessed with your support and interest in the coming years too.

Thank youDeepak Dewan and Janaki ShahCo-coordinators

Fund Raising activities

Yeti Airlines contribution

under Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Yeti Airlines Pvt. Ltd., continued their support to Tewa for the 2nd year by contributing Rs.1 from each ticket sold for the year 2007/08. Tewa received a donation of NRs. 2, 65,220.00 a half yearly contribution. From this amount we were able to provide grants to 7 organizations from 7 districts. Thank You for your support Yeti Airlines family!!!

Tewa Donors & Grantee Interaction

On 6th June 2008, Tewa organized an interaction program between the Tewa donors and the Grantees in Tewa premise. This program was held with an objective to have a direct interaction between the donors and the grantees and how the donors’ gifts to Tewa can help to transform the lives of rural women. There were more than 40 donors and 7 grantees from 5 organizations participated in this event.

Tewa Raffle Event

Raffle event is one of the parts of fund raising program designed by Tewa. It was completed successfully on 24th October 2008 at Tewa premises. The event was inaugurated by one of our grantee Ms. Rina Rai, who was the maximum raffle ticket seller (15 pads). All together there were 57 participants for the event. The program started at 1:30 PM.

Janaki Shah, Co-coordinator gave the welcome speech where she briefed about the event, also highlighted the Tewa’s vision and its mission. Similarly, Sunil Basnet, former fund raising officer announced the rules and regulation of raffle and its proceedings. The 1st prize of the

event was sponsored by 24th CT Gold store. Janaki Shah and Amita Adhikari had sponsored NRs. 300 each for the consolation prizes. However, two of the consolation prizes were sponsored by ACP. Tewa congratulate all the winners of the event; Mr. Sanjeet Jung Shah st prize, Ms. Sita Dhungana 2nd and 3rd prize winners respectively. Tewa accumulated the sum of NRs. 94,650 from the event which is an outstanding performance from all the staffs and members to raise this fund.

Tewa expresses a heartfelt thanks to all the Fund Raising Officers, Co-coordinators,

Finance Officer, Administrator, Members, Board Members, Volunteers, Support Staffs and local community people for the great contribution to make the program successful.

Tewa Carnival

Carnival was held in March 2008. It was inaugurated by Ms. Andrea Arslan, Third Secretary from German Embassy. As in the previous past two carnivals, this particular event proved to be one of the single most successful fund raising event to fund raise the most from a single event as well as an event to project Tewa’s activities to public. Despite of political turbulence, problems such as shortage of fuel, long hours of electricity cut in the country we managed to do it very well.

We requested Tewa donors and supporters to support Tewa and also to sponsor children from orphanages to visit the carnival and enjoy the games, food, and drinks. In deed that was successful as we could get sponsorship for 441 children from eight orphanages to participate in the carnival. It was a very heartening sight to see the children dancing and enjoying food, games, horse riding, face painting etc..

Tewa carnival has been able to draw the support of previous and new corporate sponsors. We were indeed very happy to have the support of these corporate donors as well as individuals at the

time when the nation is facing economic crisis. These companies and individuals supported the event through various means like donating out-right, in-kind by giving their products, or sponsoring banners etc.

The event was able to raise approximately NRs. 600,000 (US$ 9,000) which we consider a very good amount of fund raising from a single event. The event not only raised fund for Tewa but also to publicize about Tewa and its activities. Children from orphanages enjoyed here as many of them would not get this kind of opportunity. We were able to mobilize commercial organizations to support social cause.

Deep Parjwalan (Lighting of Lamps)

Another fund raising event that we have been successfully conducting is “Dip Prajwalan”. In this event we prepare butter lamps and are sold to people who light these lamps in the names of their loved ones or their deity etc. Lamps are lit in public places. Before the event takes place we share Tewa’s ethics, values and objectives, what it does and how can people support it. This year also the event was held with grand success. Despite not very good economic environment in the country, the fund raising was good. We can attribute the success to good team work among Tewa Board, members, staffs and volunteers who made concerted efforts to fund raising activities.

Teej Program

20th August 2008, the day for Teej, one of the blissful festivals of Nepali women; once again it was commemorated by Tewa in a colorful manner. Besides, being a festival of delicious food, songs, and dances, women dressed in red color, it is also the festival of their distinct identity that is celebrated with much fun by both married and single Nepali women. As song and dances are the important feature of Teej, women in their customary red saris and ornaments celebrate it with singing and dancing as they fast to appease Lord Shiva for long and healthy life of their husband. This is the case in married women while unmarried girls fast on this day for a good husband. The celebration last for three days.

For the third time, Tewa with the help of the Tewa Saving and Credit group of volunteers celebrated Teej with much more of enthusiasm and respect for the women in Nepal at Crystal Party Palace, Man Bhawan. Volunteers Motivation Programs

In order to appreciate and honor the efforts of volunteers, Tewa organizes programs like Picnic, Tea and Award Functions that are purely dedicated to the volunteers of Tewa.

Picnics are often an intimate occasion between people, be it family members, friends or people associated in an organization. Picnic is one of the events that are organized to boost volunteer’s motivation. The volunteer’s picnic was organized on 24 May, 2008 to express “Thank You”, to inspire them and to acknowledge their contributions to Tewa as volunteers. Picnic also had another important event - that was the launching of the first edition of “Volunteers’ Directory” it was jointly launched by Kamala Pradhan, Board member and Neeta Lama, General member. The event was filled with fun and excitement with dance, songs and bingo. Every one enjoyed the event and returned home with very happy memory of the day.

to communicate with other people and be able to fund-raise for a cause and that is what Tewa stands for.

Tewa member Nirmala K.C, the primary facilitator was supported by Urmila Shrestha, Volunteer Program Officer. While various resource persons were invited to give sessions on specific subjects like development, condition and position of women in Nepal in which trainee volunteers learn about various development issues in the present context of Nepal, especially women’s condition and their position. This enriches and gives trainees a broader vision on women's issues and helps volunteers to better understand Tewa’s work, activities, ethics and values.

Narendra Raj Poudel was the resource person for “Development, Condition and Position of Women” and spoke about various development issues in the present context of Nepal, especially women’s condition and their position. This session provided trainees to acquire broader perspectives on women issues in Nepal. Philanthropy was another topic that trainees were made acquainted with. Philanthropy session was conducted by Dr. Shree Krishan Shrestha. Training also contained real life examples from the experiences of past volunteers and staff. Such as Tewa staff sharing about the activities and strategies of Tewa’s fund raising program. Sunil Basnet, Fund raising Officer then shared about the activities and strategies of Tewa fund raising programs. He presented also updated the volunteers with the data of past years. And Tewa Co-coordinator Janaki Shah shared about the tips and learning she have had from the training called the Women of Color International Development Incubator (WOCIDI).

In the training Tewa’s donors were also invited to interact with trainees and to answer their queries and share the outlook, experiences and above all why they are motivated to become donors to Tewa. Pradeep Bikram Shah from Yeti Airlines spoke about it and the motivation behind Yeti Airlines’ contribution to Tewa. Tewa grantees are also another integral part of the training as they share their experiences and achievements after getting Tewa’s grants. This session provides the trainees with live examples of what their contribution can bring in the lives of rural women and their community. Harimaya Adhikari one of the grantees named Hamro Phalame Mutthi, from Lamjung district shared her experiences and her organization's achievement after getting Tewa’s grant and how they became successful to generate income for sustainability.

The other session like communication combined with motivation that aims to give volunteers the required skills to communicate effectively that comes handy when volunteers interact with other people in their community. otheR activities

Collaborative work with Cedpa, Nepal and other organizations

Members of the Women Act network first got together through a series of workshops led by an international non-governmental organization, the Centre for Development and Population Activities (Cedpa), on how Nepali women can give their views while the new constitution is being drafted. These workshops brought Nepali women together with national constitutional experts as well as women from South Africa and Kenya who have led constitutional reforms in their countries.

This program is designed to amplify the voices of women during the drafting of the interim constitution, the new Charter calls for the passage and ratification of a Nepali constitution that reflects both equality and equity in the post-conflict era and in Nepal’s progress towards sustainable peace. This program commenced from 4 to 7 February, 2008.

As Nepal embarks on a post-conflict transitional process of government, the understanding and support of women throughout the country will be required to bring about a positive transformation. In support of this process, Cedpa has organized a series of workshops and brought group of women together representing networks. This network consists of 36 different organizations working on different women issues. This network has provided the opportunity to share, learn and create the means for women to guide Nepal’s future through the new constitution which will strengthen women’s capacity to lead that change; Tewa, being one of the active members from the very beginning.

The workshops were designed to advocate the plans that were in alignment with the Constituent Assembly (CA) process and to ensure that women’s voice are heard in the constitution making. The network established in the exercise known as Women Acting for Transformative Change – WOMEN ACT. Different organizations in WOMEN ACT used their own inner networks to get the voices and vision of grassroots level women in drafting a new constitution. While drafting of women charter the network also consulted with its members, women CA members, legal advisors and International persons who were involved in constitution making process from South Africa, Kenya and USA. We appreciate the involvement of Tewa’s Co-coordinator Janaki Shah and Urmila Shrestha, Volunteer Program Officer in this workshop. For advocacy Women Act has also officially launched website www.womenact.org.np and a press conference was organized to inform about the Women Charter prepared by the network, the function was well attended by women CA members, network members, media and general public.

Various Activities

1 The Annual Planning Workshop was carried in between 21st- 22nd July 2008 to review the progress and planning for the coming days.

2 Tewa was invited to participate in Nepal Armed Police Force’s program from 2 to 4 July 2008. It was good opportunity to let new groups of people know about Tewa and its activities. This program is expected to be the helping hand for Tewa to connect with different people in Tewa’s future program and fund raising activities.

A Journey to Pratappur, Manahari VDC, MakwanpurBy Janaki Shah

Gender inequality and inequity has always been the major concern here in Nepal. Women are oppressed in either way and it is very difficult for them to achieve parity with men. However, it is always a good feeling when we see women active making them empowered in various ways. Moreover, the feelings become more intense when Tewa is always ahead in such activities of women making them empowered. Pratappur, one of the remote villages, situated in Manahri VDC, Makwanpur district is one of the greatest examples that I have experienced in my recent past where I got to see women being active for their livelihood. The village where illiteracy rate is high with the problem of sanitation all

around, the organization called Mahila Uthan Tatha Sip Bikas Kendra has done remarkable work in Pratappur and the periphery for the sustainable development of under privilege women. Rina Rai, the organization president has set an example in this village with her inspiriting work achievement; that is always appreciable. Tewa is proud to have such a grantee.

On the president’s invitation from Mahila Uthan Tatha Sip Bikas Kendra; we Tewa team; Laxmi Maharjan, Atmaram Thapa, Basanta Devkota and Tara Thapa went to Pratappur for the inauguration of their new office building on 23 March 2008. The reason we received an invitation was that the Tewa had supported the organization by providing a grant of NRs. 50,000 for the construction of the office building. It’s privilege to be the part of inauguration ceremony where the majority of people are janajatis. It was a pleasant feeling when we saw two people waiting for us at our destination in Manahri where we reached there at 12 noon. Those were the people sent by the president Rina Rai so that we could reach Pratappur in a convenient manner. However, in the middle of our journey we had to cross the Rapti River. This was pretty exciting, everyone holding hands together and crossing the river. This was my first ever attempt in my life time to cross the river where I could feel the flow of current in the river bed. Thanks! To my colleagues who helped me from getting swept away if I hadn’t been holding

them. From there we had 45 minutes walk to reach finally to the village. We received the heartfelt welcome from all the officials and members of the organization with full confectioneries. It was great to see real people with full affection and emotion; apart from this so called modern world. Then, we went to inauguration venue where the new room of the organization was built. We could feel the presence of almost 100 people gathered there for an event. The presences of women were more in comparison to men. We came to

know while we were in the event that during the establishment period of the organization, the president Rina Rai had organized sewing/cutting training and mid wife training to 39 women with the grant that was provided to it by Tewa. President believes; it was the helpful tool for the organization to make a mark in women empowerment then. Rina Rai, the first lady to work for women in the community level was the true model of feminism. We could see and feel so much of respect and honor to her from the villagers, especially from women. At the end of the program, certificates were distributed to all the participants of training. It was proud moment for Tewa team to be a part of this program.

It was such an exciting trip for all of us because we were visiting one of our special empowered grantee in rural village of Pratappur. However, we were amazed to see that people in this village are departed from getting access to their life chances. We could find that:1. There was only one school up to 5th grade in the village with only 2 girl students passed

high school. Girls were sent to school up to the 5th grade and had to stop there due to no high grade schools. Boys were sent to schools in other village or to the city area.

2. No toilet except one in the school premises.3. No health post. People had to depend to the other village or city.4. No accesses of transportation during monsoon as people are stuck due to Rapti River.

The impact of political inconsistency can be seen in this rural village where people are abandoned with their access to life chances. People like Rina Rai who has devoted her life in such a social activities for sustainable growth can set an example and also can be the motivational factors to others. Moreover, Tewa’s role in women empowerment and sustainable development can be strongly felt.

Koshi Flood Victims Relief Program

Tewa, as we know stands for the philanthropic denomination that also have extensive experience in carrying out relief operation around the nation during major disaster. With these ethics and objectives, when the nation was struck with the massive flood of Sapta Koshi, Tewa’s staffs Sunil Basnet and Atmaram Thapa went to affected area on 7 September 2008 (2065/05/22).

As relief preparedness, Tewa contributed total amount of NRs. 145,000 from Tewa’s Discretionary Grant, personal contribution of NRs. 10,000 from Tewa’s president Maggie Shah, NRs. 5,000 each from Tewa's member Ram

Laxmi Shrestha and Amita Adhikari along with 3 boxes of cloths. Tewa express its gratitude to Biratnagar branch manager of Yeti Airlines Prem Kunwar, Tewa Member Lhamu Sherpa, Plan International, Red Cross and UN without their support the relief operation was not possible. We would also like to thank Abijal Bista, reporter of Sagarmatha TV who covered the operation.

tewa childRen’s PRogRaM

We know that the children are the future of any family, community and the Nation. When children have not experienced a healthy early childhood, they face disadvantages for life: their bodies and brains develop more slowly, they struggle at school and play and lack confidence and social skills. Hence, Tewa believes that to develop and grow to their full potential, young children have special needs for love, protection and care. However, it is a sad story; they often do not get it, through lack of awareness, knowledge or priority in under privileged communities. In order to achieve the social, emotional, mental and physical needs of young children, Tewa has been successful so far in conducting various children’s programs by gathering the community children.

Apparently, 75 children participate in this program and both children and parents have affirmative impact from it. The purpose behind conducting this program is to teach children

about philanthropic giving culture, expanding children’s horizon and mind on social and cultural activities and most importantly update them about the different activities of Tewa. The program is running since 3rd February 2007.

For children’s program Rs. 31000 worth of toys and game were purchased. And worth Rs. 3000 dinner plates were purchased. This expenditure as well as other expenditures was covered by an organization named Art Venture from Singapore. Rural Education and Development Organization (READ) has also been supportive for these programs.
