Folkestone and Hythe Birds Tetrad Guide: TR13 T (Bargrove, Dibgate, Beachborough Lake and Asholt Wood) The tetrad TR13 T contains a good variety of habitats which were found to support over 60 species of breeding birds during the recent survey, and an overall total of over 130 species, which is a respectable tally for a land- locked square. It had not been particularly well-watched though until the Beachborough Lakes area received regular coverage by Steve Tomlinson between April 2016 and April 2019. Great Crested Grebe, Coot, Reed Warbler and Reed Bunting have bred there whilst Tufted Duck, Little Grebe, Water Rail and Kingfisher have wintered. Passage birds have included Baillon’s Crake, Black-bellied Dipper, Red-rumped Swallow, Quail, Black Kite, Hen and Marsh Harriers, Goshawk, Osprey, Goosander, Jack Snipe and Bearded Tit. The surrounding bushes have attracted Yellow-browed, Wood, Cetti’s, Grasshopper and Garden Warblers, Redstart and Pied Flycatcher, whilst visual migration may involve hirundines, pipits, wagtails, thrushes (including Ring Ouzel) and finches (including Brambling and Crossbill). • Folkestone and Hythe Birds Tetrad Guide: TR13 T (Bargrove, Dibgate, Beachborough Lake and Asholt Wood)

The tetrad TR13 T contains a good variety of habitats which were found to support over 60 species of breeding birds during the recent survey, and an overall total of over 130 species, which is a respectable tally for a land-locked square.

Looking west across Beachborough Lakes towards Summerhouse Hill

  • The adjacent pasture fields and the Summerhouse Hill area hold breeding Meadow Pipit and possibly Grey Partridge, wintering Common and Mediterranean Gulls, and attract Yellow Wagtail, Wheatear and Whinchat on passage. Ravens have been seen regularly flying over and may breed nearby. This area was formerly a regular haunt of Little Owl and Barn Owl has also been recorded. Asholt Wood probably holds breeding Hobby, Marsh Tit and Nuthatch, and formerly Nightingale, whilst Grey Wagtails breed at Frogholt. Mandarin Ducks have nested at Oak Banks, whilst Canada Goose, Tufted Duck and Coot have probably bred at the lake there, with Gadwall, Teal, Little Grebe and Kingfisher frequent in winter. Oak Banks wood has breeding Marsh Tit and wintering Woodcock, and in some years Siskin and Redpoll. Nearby Bargrove Wood also holds breeding Marsh Tit and Nuthatch, and wintering Woodcock. The fields to the west of Oak Banks may still hold Grey Partridge, though the species is in decline locally and Red-legged Partridge have bred near Bargrove Wood and Stone Farm.

  • Mandarin Ducks may also breed at Little Dibgate Wood. The former Sand Pit near Bargrove (known as Newington Quarry) held breeding Sand Martins until the late 1990s and there is a small reedbed to the east, along the Seabrook Stream which has breeding Reed Warbler. Buzzards are now a common sight in the tetrad and Red Kites have been seen passing over on several occasions, with Merlin and Peregrine also having been noted.

The western face of Newington Quarry which formerly hosted a colony of Sand Martins Access and Parking There are a series of footpaths and bridleways which cross the area but there is currently no public access to Beachborough Lakes, the lake at Oak Banks, Newington Quarry or Asholt Wood.

  • To explore the southern half of the tetrad it is possible to park in a lay-by between Bargrove and the railway bridge, or to park at Saltwood Castle (in TR13 S) and walk north-east. To access the northern section it is probably easiest to park in Frogholt although there is some limited parking along the Ashford Road and just to the north of the Beachborough roundabout. Other Natural History The tetrad contains sections of two Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI). The southern segment of Asholt Wood is within TR13 T and forms part of the Folkestone Escarpment SSSI. The wood is regarded as one of the best examples of a coppiced ash woodland in the county. It has an outstanding lichen flora and supports an excellent assemblage of insects including many local and rare species. Part of the Seabrook Stream SSSI also lies within the tetrad. The interest of this SSSI centres on the alder carr and fen communities that support an exceptional number of cranefly species. The varied geology over the course of the stream has given rise to a range of conditions in which different habitats have developed in close proximity. Base-rich springline alder carr has developed on the wettest soils and here the ground flora is varied, with characteristic species such as opposite-leaved Golden Saxifrage and Lesser Pond-sedge frequent in some areas, along with Marsh Marigold and Yellow Flag Iris. Where seepages arise above the woodland rich flush communities occur, generally dominated by Great Horsetail and Great Willowherb but also including Greater Pond-sedge, Marsh Horsetail and Common Spotted-orchid. On the drier slopes of the valley there is woodland, scrub and neutral grassland. The woodland canopy is dominated by Oak, Ash and Hazel with Bluebells, Red Campion and Moschatel frequent amongst the ground flora. The scrub is principally of Hawthorn, Elder and Blackthorn. Within the grassland are found species characteristic of basic soils, such as Dwarf Thistle as well as other species characteristic of more acid soils, such as Heath Speedwell. In total some 314 species of flowering plant, 109 species of fungi, 41 species of lichen and 11 species of ferns and horsetails have been identified within the tetrad. The whole of the Seabrook valley supports an exceptional number of cranefly species, 67 having been recorded to date. This total includes four nationally scarce species, one being Erioptera limbata, which lives on stream margins, known from only two other sites in Britain. It is the seepages within the alder carr providing a wide range of moisture regimes, that allow this site to support so many species. Fourteen other invertebrate species found on the site are nationally scarce: for example the caddis fly Rhvacophila septentrionis which lives in the stream itself and whose larvae feed on those of midges, mayflies and stoneflies; and the harvestman Homalenotus quadridentatus which occurs in the drier grassland further up the valley sides. Moth trapping at Bargrove Wood on several occasions since 2015 has slowly extended the lepidoptera list and in June 2017 revealed the presence of Agrotera nemoralis (Beautiful Pearl), known from very few sites in the country. The rare migrant Catoptria verellus (Marbled Grass-veneer), which appears to be colonising, was also recorded.

  • Other notable moth records include Gold Swift, Diurnea lipsiella (November Tubic), Eriopsela quadrana (Four-spot Bell), Dichrorampha simpliciana (Round-winged Drill) and Pammene albuginana (Blotched Piercer). Given the range of habitats present in the tetrad there is clear potential for the moth list of 261 species to be increased and perhaps for other interesting discoveries to be made.

  • Butterfly sightings have included Purple Hairstreak, Brimstone and Wall, as well as the immigrant species Clouded Yellow and Painted Lady. Banded Demoiselle can be found at Beachborough Lakes and an impressive 311 species of Diptera (true flies) have been noted in the 2km square. Beachborough Lakes are a traditional spawning ground for Common Toads.

    Banded Demoiselle at Beachborough Lakes

Painted Lady at Beachborough Lakes General History The hamlet of Frogholt remains largely unchanged since the eighteenth century and four of its eight dwellings are grade II listed. It appears on older maps as ‘Frogwell’ and later ‘Froghole’, and its name presumably arises from the traditional spawning grounds of the Common Toad at nearby Beachborough Lakes. Frogholt probably developed as a cluster of small farmsteads around the Seabrook Stream and Newington Mill – the latter closed in the late 1900s, and was demolished in the 1980s as part of the Channel Tunnel development.

    Old Kent Cottage

Frogholt Manor The most unusual building in Frogholt is the picturesque timber-framed hall house, Old Kent Cottage, dating back to the early fourteenth century. With its thatched roof, a jettied overhang at one end and a cruck-like construction above, it sits on a stone plinth at right angles and directly on the edge of the Seabrook Stream. Brook House, the first building on entering the hamlet, is also timber-framed and of around seventeenth century construction or earlier. Also dating from the same period is Frogholt Manor (previously Frogholt House), another timber-framed building, with later additions. A further timber-framed house, Magpie Cottage, can also be found witihin Frogholt.

  • Summerhouse Hill was once part of the grounds of the Beachborough Park estate and takes its name from an elegant summerhouse which was built on its summit in the eighteenth century. This would have commanded a panoramic view of the surrounding scenery, including views across the English Channel to France. It was apparently destroyed during the Second World War by the British Royal Engineers as part of their explosives practice.
