Folkestone and Hythe Birds Tetrad Guide: TR13 M (Brockhill Country Park, Hythe Roughs East and Saltwood)
The Royal Military Canal runs through the southern edge of the tetrad TR13 M, from the Burmarsh Bridge at Palmarsh eastwards into Hythe Town, and the canal and its banks, particularly adjacent to the Roughs, form one of the most interesting habitats for birds. The canal itself holds breeding Mute Swan, Mallard and Moorhen, whilst rarer visitors have included Egyptian Goose, Mandarin, Goosander and Red-throated Diver. Kingfishers are regularly seen and Reed Warblers breed in the Phragmites along the canal edges. The scrub and trees which line the bank hold the commoner breeding warblers, and possibly Cetti’s Warbler whilst Chiffchaff, Blackcap and Firecrest may overwinter. Alder trees here can hold Siskin and Redpoll in winter.

The tetrad contains the eastern part of Hythe Roughs, which has breeding Red-legged Partridge, Stock Dove, Cuckoo, Little Owl, Whitethroat, Stonechat, Linnet and Yellowhammer, and formerly Turtle Dove, with Snipe in winter. In the north-west of the tetrad lies Brockhill Country Park with its small, shaded lake which holds breeding Mallard and Moorhen, and is sometimes visited by Mandarin (which breeds in nearby woods), Grey Heron and Kingfisher. Very occasionally other duck such as Gadwall or Teal have occurred, but the lake is prone to disturbance. In the wood around the lake Tawny Owls, Green and Great Spotted Woodpeckers, Stock Doves and Jackdaws compete for nesting holes, whilst Jay, Nuthatch, Treecreeper, Coal Tit and Bullfinch are regularly seen. Marsh Tit is still recorded on occasion but was formerly more regular. Firecrests are frequent in winter, with Siskins and Redpolls in some years, and occasionally Woodcock. The Brockhill Stream runs south from the lake through the sheep-grazed pastures of the valley to another wooded area around Turnpike Hill. The marshy flushes emerging from a series of springs on the slopes to the west attract Snipe and sometimes Jack Snipe. The stream itself often holds Grey Wagtail and was frequented by a Black-bellied Dipper between January and March 1989. A Woodchat Shrike was seen in the valley in May 1991 and Red Kite and Osprey have been seen flying over.
The lake at Brockhill Country Park The tetrad also contains part of Hythe Ranges but there is no access to this section, except for by prior arrangement with the Ministry of Defence. In April 2015 a Hoopoe spent a day in the south-eastern corner of the Ranges and adjacent land and was viewable from Range Road. The same area also produced two Wood Larks in October 2015. Saltwood village occupies much of the north-eastern quadrant of the tetrad and, thanks mostly to a couple of resident birdwatchers, has built up an impressive list of rarities and scarcities, including White-fronted Goose, Purple Heron, Black Stork, Spoonbill, Honey Buzzard, Black Kite, Red Kite, White-tailed Eagle, Hen Harrier, Rough-legged Buzzard, Goshawk, Crane, Bee-eater, Golden Oriole and Twite. The western part of Hythe Town extends into the south-east of the tetrad and this area attracted good numbers of Waxwings during the 2010/11 influx, with a peak of 87 counted opposite the Red Lion pub in December 2010.
Fly-over sightings have included Honey Buzzard, Red Kite, Marsh Harrier and Bee-eater, whilst there are old records of Corncrake, Wryneck and Lesser Spotted Woodpecker.
Looking south along the Brockhill Stream In early 2014 the tetrad hosted Kent’s first (and Britain’s second) Chinese Pond Heron, which frequented gardens in Saltwood and the Turnpike Hill area, also ranging as far as the eastern end of Hythe Roughs.

Hoopoe at Range Road, Hythe Access and Parking The canal and Roughs can be accessed via Green Lane, which runs along the northern bank of the canal, westwards from Scanlon’s Bridge (near the Light Railway Station). There is free parking here. Hythe is on several bus routes. Brockhill Country Park is situated off the Sandling Road, between Saltwood and Sandling Station. If approaching from the north, it is signposted from the junction 11 of the M20. The park is open between 09:00 and 21:00, or dusk if earlier, and parking charges apply (£1.50 on Monday to Friday; £2.50 on weekends and bank holidays). There is an excellent vegetarian café on site, which is open from 10:00 (to 17:30 in Apr-Oct, or to 16:00 in Nov-Mar), and toilets are situated by the car park. In can be a popular area with families, particularly in summer, and there are occasional organised activities.
For the latest information refer to www.kent.gov.uk/leisure-and-community/parks-and-outdoor-activities/brockhill-country-park. It is also possible to access Brockhill Country Park from the A261, by parking at Pedlinge (near the church) and following footpaths across the fields. This could enable a triangular walk to also encompass Chesterfield Wood (in TR13 N). It can also be reached from Hythe, via Turnpike Hill. Other Natural History The section of Hythe Roughs is part of the Lympne Escarpment SSSI, which extends westwards to Stutfall Castle. The steep escarpment is of Kentish ragstone, a hard sandy limestone formed by the Hythe Beds of the Lower Greensand, which produces calcareous soils. The grassland of this site is among the best remaining examples of semi-natural habitats on ragstone in Kent. Outcrops of ragstone are frequent on the upper slopes of the escarpment and the vegetation here is dominated by grasses such as fescues, Cock’s-foot and False Oat-grass. The marshy ground below the spring-line has tall herb vegetation including plants such as Great Horsetail, Great Willowherb and Water Figwort. Brockhill Country Park comprises 22 hectares of land designated in 1986 as a Country Park and managed by Kent County Council. It was formerly part of a large estate, with the ornamental lake (probably dating from the late Victorian period) and relict exotic plantings of trees, shrubs and spring bulbs providing evidence of this influence on the landscape. The ground flora among the more natural parts of the streamsides and floodplain is dominated by native damp-loving species. There is much Golden Saxifrage, Moschatel, Pendulous and Remote Sedge, with Cuckooflower and Wavy Bitter-cress etc. A good variety of common woodland herbs occurs on the drier ground with Dog’s Mercury, Yellow Archangel, Dog-Violets and Primrose. It is also considered to be a Site of Nature Conservation Interest (SNCI). The tetrad has an exceptional moth list due to the residency of Paul Howe (at Saltwood) from August 2010 to December 2015 and Ian Roberts (at Hythe) from May 2014. In total 1,009 species have been recorded (the most of any local tetrad) which include a rich array of rare and notable species. These include the third and fourth British records of Dusky Marbled Brown, the 16th British record of Scarce Brindle and eight of the 21 British records of Pale-shouldered Cloud.

The first Kent record of Metalampra italica (Italian Tubic) occurred at Saltwood in 2011 and it has since become locally established as have Bloxworth Snout, Jersey Tiger and Plumed Fan-foot, which were all formerly rare immigrants.
Notable butterflies have included the second area record of Large Tortoiseshell, as well as the more regular migrant Clouded Yellow and Painted Lady. The White Letter Hairstreak can be found on Wych Elms along the canal west of the town, whilst the Purple Hairstreak inhabits oaks in the Saltwood area and Green Hairstreak can be found on Hythe Ranges. Brimstone has also been recorded at Saltwood. A migrant Banded Demoiselle visited a garden in Hythe in July 2014 and Migrant Hawker is a regular visitor, whilst Small Red-eyed Damselfly has also been recorded. There have been a series of sightings of the scarce Southern Oak Bush Cricket and there are impressive species lists of several insect groups, including 87 Hemiptera (true bugs), 87 Hymenoptera (wasps, bees and ants), 265 coleoptera (beetles) and 661 diptera (true flies), particularly craneflies. Brockhill Country Park is considered to be of county importance for its bryophytes (mosses and liverworts) and lichens, and there are also very good lists of fungi and flowering plants. It is the only known site in the county for Arum italicum subsp. neglectum (Italian Lords-and-Ladies), which was rediscovered there in November 2018, having been thought to be extinct in Kent for over 50 years (further details can be found here: https://bsbi.org/wp-content/uploads/dlm_uploads/rare-plant-register-accounts-A-March-2019.pdf). Also of interest is the presence of the Marsh Frog (the largest of British frogs). It is said to have been introduced in 1935 from Hungary possibly into local garden ponds at Lympne (and at Stone-in-Oxney). It spread very rapidly along the Marsh dykes and by 1940 had reached the western extremity of Romney Marsh at Pett Level, also colonising the Royal Military Canal. General History Brockhill Country Park was once part of a large estate which dates back to Norman times. It seems likely that it was a game estate, supplying meat, fish and timber to Saltwood Castle. In the late 1400s, the Tournay (or Tourney) family took over the estate. The last of their successors had the biggest impact on the estate, and is responsible for much of how it now appears today. It would appear that this last Lord of Brockhill Manor, William Tournay Tournay (1849-1903), was an eccentric character. He seems to have gathered a reputation for insularity, world travel and oddness, including the addition of an extra Tournay to his name! William began to collect birds from about 1862 and amassed an extensive collection over the next forty years before his death. Thereafter the collection was acquired by the town of Hythe (in 1904) and was housed in the Town Hall. Norman Ticehurst inspected the specimens and recorded, in his A History of the Birds of Kent (1909), that “the collection is a very beautiful one, and the birds were admirably stuffed by the late Charles Gordon”, a taxidermist of some renown. He believed that a great many of the specimens were “no doubt local, but many also appear to have been obtained during voyages in the far north, and the collection is very rich in species such as the Greenland [Gyr] Falcon, King-Eider and Ivory-Gull. Since no record whatever has been kept of the local specimens, the collection is not of much value as representing the fauna of the county, but there are a few, which are almost certainly local, such as the Pallas’s Sand-Grouse”. The sandgrouse (two) were in the same case as a “pied Wood-Pigeon” and Ticehurst concluded that “it seems probable from this combination that the Sand-Grouse are local birds, but nothing is now known of their origin”. It is likely that they were collected locally in the 1888 irruption. Upon his death, William is said to have ordered that his constant companions, his dog and his horse, were to be killed and buried with him. The grave of the dog (“Daisy”) is next to William's on one of the islands in the lake at Brockhill Country Park, however it appears that the horse escaped and was never found. The gravestones are no longer in existence (for further information see: www.saltwoodkent.co.uk/#!island-grave/c18h5). The Brockhill Manor house was built in 1611 under the instruction of Thomas Tournay. It is Jacobean in style, with some more recent alterations and is Grade II listed. It now sits at the centre of the Brockhill Park Performing Arts College campus and houses their main reception and administrative block. Kent County Council bought the remainder of the estate in 1947 and opened it to the public in 1986. In 1805 the Royal Staff Corps were established in Hythe, having been transferred from Chatham, a measure designed to protect against the threat of invasion by Napoleon. They were housed in barracks erected in Military Road until disbanded in 1838. In 1853 the barracks were occupied by the School of Musketry, specifically to train soldiers in the use of the new Enfield rifle on Hythe Ranges.
The continued development of more efficient firearms resulted in a change of name in 1919 to the Small Arms Wing. In 1968 it transferred to Warminster in Wiltshire and the buildings were largely demolished, although the Commandant’s House remains and has been converted into six flats known as Hay House in Sir John Moore Avenue. Margaretta Lemon, the first Honorary Secretary of the RSPB, grew up at the School of Musketry where her father Captain Smith was Adjutant in the 1860s.
Brockhill Manor House
Hay House The Royal Staff Corps were responsible for the construction of the Royal Military Canal, which was completed in 1809, and which cuts through the southern half of the tetrad. It is a characteristic of a number of local tetrads and a separate paper on its history is planned for the website. The Wagon Train Barracks were also placed in Hythe during the Napoleonic scare, on the triangular piece of ground south of the canal between the Duke’s Head and Scanlon’s Bridge. They were demolished in 1839. During the Crimean War a Foreign Legion was accommodated in barracks on the slopes by Barrack Hill. The Red Lion pub dates from the beginning of the nineteenth century, though it is possible that an inn or hotel (known as the Market Hotel) stood on or near this site from the start of the seventeenth century. Indeed Red Lion Square was formerly known as Market Square until about 1914. The current building is grade II listed and is mentioned in several of Russell Thorndike's “Doctor Syn” stories. On the corner of Red Lion Square sits a grade II listed K6 telephone kiosk, as designed by the eminent architect Giles Gilbert Scott in 1935 to celebrate the Silver Jubilee of King George V. At the northern end of St. Leonard’s Road, close to the area known as ‘The Green’, there is a triangular-shaped former animal pound dating from the late eighteenth or early nineteenth century, which later used as a horse watering station, probably by the military.

The western part of the town of Hythe is located within the tetrad and contains a number of grade II listed eighteenth and nineteenth century houses and some medieval masonry walls, part of a network forming the boundary of gardens and plots of land in the area around the Parish Church of St Leonard (which is situated in TR13 S). The Romney, Hythe and Dymchurch Railway has its terminus within the tetrad (for further information see www.rhdr.org.uk) and the stadium of Hythe Town Football Club (www.hythetownfc.co.uk) is also situated within TR13 M.
