Dear Visitor, On behalf of the Government and the people of Bermuda, welcome to our island home.

Let us show you that Bermuda is so much more. EditorLetter from the

Simona, Candice & Natalie

Say Hello to Mr. Happy Man Last time I checked, nowhere else in the world stands a statue of a man who is still alive today and daily spends the better part of his morning greeting passerby’s. Johnny Barnes, a Bermuda Native, can be found at the Foot of The Lane roundabout in Hamilton from approximately 3:45am – 10:00am every working day, rain or shine. He touches the hearts of everyone he meets and has made an impact on people all over the world who have only heard about his dedication to making others smile. I think it is safe to say that he is a very special man and we are lucky to know him. This month we challenge you to stop by and say hello to Johnny Barnes, if he isn’t there find his statue and wave with it as the traffic passes you by. This is a little piece of history you want to be apart of even if just in your own memory.

May is a pretty big deal for Bermudians, it is Heritage Month, summer days play peek-a-boo, locals start dipping their toes, feet, legs and eventually their entire bodies into the ocean. It is the month when business men start wearing colourful Bermuda shorts, the highly anticipated End to End walk/run takes place and let’s not forget Bermuda Day!

Visit our Calendar of events; it is packed with all sorts of things to do this month. Our arts section features some very talented ladies including jewelry designer alexandra Mosher and photographer amanda Temple who we have to thank for our gorgeous cover photo.

BERMUDA haha

By RogER CRomBiE

I took a job in Bermuda without ever having visited the Island. The job was the thing; the location made no difference to me. I assumed that Bermuda was in the Caribbean, which I had also never visited. The Caribbean sounded warm and exotic, so how far wrong could I go?Came the day, therefore, when I boarded a flight at Baltimore airport, after undergoing indoctrination at my employer’s head office, to fly to Bermuda for the first time. In those days, the Island was nowhere near the Caribbean. Following a change of government, of course, Bermuda would later move south to become the northern outpost of that chain of islands.

I stayed initially at the Rosedon Hotel. What a lovely start to my new life! I was to work in Hamilton for a few days a month. On my first night, I retreated to the hotel after work ended, with half a bottle of Kahlua, a chocolate liqueur that I drank at the time with milk; I was in training to become the world’s fattest drunk. Lying on my hotel bed that evening, I slowly all but polished off the half-bottle, neat, and fell into a stupor.

I awoke to find two columns of ants, each perhaps six inches across, one working its way towards the cap of the bottle, the other staggering its way from same. ants have never scared me, but when I washed out the bottle and its cap, the ants dispersed all over the room, which wasn’t encouraging.

On that first flight to Bermuda, I had been the sole passenger. On the second visit, a month later, every seat on the aircraft was taken. Most of the passengers wore sombreros; I have no idea why. I had worn my thick wool suit throughout the first trip, but relented slightly on the second occasion. In those days, visitors were waved through Customs and out into the street, a practice long since abandoned.

Offered my choice of domiciles to live in, I opted for Bermuda because of the income tax rate, then zero. I’d have lived in an anthill in Siberia to avoid income tax. I’m British: not long before this, UK income tax had been 97.5 percent. I’m not allowed to offer financial advice, but I will say this: where income tax is concerned, zero is better than 97.5 percent. you probably didn’t know that.

The months and years passed, as they sometimes do. I left Bermuda, came back, left again, came back again, and was finally expelled from the Island like the unruly schoolboy I’d become.

Thanks to decades of Bermuda income tax rates, I can now afford to feed and shelter myself for life. I owe it all to Bermuda. It’s not as if I worked seven days a week for 30 years. Oh wait, I did. But I could have done that in the UK and still be starving in the gutter.

So thank you, Bermuda. you made a poor man very happy.

a new look for Harbour nights! By CandiCE diCkinSon

This summer the City of Hamilton will be at its best on Wednesday nights as the streets come alive with sparkling lights. Follow the tantalizing smell of local and international fare. Taste dishes such as fish chowder and conch stew. Watch Gombeys dancing in the streets dressed in beautiful, bright, colourful costumes. Listen to the sounds of the Bermuda Regimental Music Display. Meet Tradition Bearers and learn how they keep Bermuda’s heritage alive. Watch local artisans and craftsmen create works of art, you may even learn a secret or two of their trade. Sample Gosling’s traditional drinks while listening to busker style performers as you make your way through the new route of Harbour Nights where locals and visitors connect enjoying a truly authentic Bermudian experience. Harbour nights has been revitalized! Please tell us what’s new!

interview with… Joanne mcphee, Executive Director, Bermuda Chamber of Commercenew RouteIn the past Harbour Nights has always been restricted to Front Street. In order for us to bring the entire City to life, this year, Reid Street and Queen Street will also be pedestrianized. The purpose of this is to engage our retailers and restaurateurs. We anticipate that there will be a real buzz on Reid Street and most stores and restaurants will be open late including Washington Mall. In addition to festival-like activities and late night shopping, we can expect to find relaxing alfresco dining, along the route. Tradition BearersThis year we will focus on our rich heritage and culture encompassing the theme Sights Sounds and Colours of Bermuda. Each night a different Tradition Bearer will be featured. Learn about the craft of building, making banana dolls, or the life of a Cedar Craftsman.

If the weather isn’t nice you can find the action under the library veranda. youth ambassadors will be handing out the maps along the streets on the night; Harbour Nights maps will also be available in various locations across the island. Busker Style EntertainmentThis year we will be featuring Busker style entertainment, three performing artists each night strategically placed along the Harbour Nights route. The purpose of this is to encourage patrons to follow through the entire route experiencing everything the event has to offer while showcasing Bermuda’s many talented entertainers.

JESSIE JAmES CRUISES Royal Naval DockyardJoin Captain Chloe Mckey for some of the best snorkeling trips available in Bermuda. Novice and advanced snorkelers are welcome. Chloe begins with a short island/beach snorkel then zooms offshore to either Eastern Blue cut or Western Blue cut or Chub head breakers. The choice of destinations largely depends on the weather conditions on the day of. If the weather is suitable, two famous shipwrecks are covered - The Constellation that sunk in 1943 and The Montana wreck that sunk in 1863 which sits in 15 to 18 feet of water at Western Blue Cut.

another stunning location that will be visited is a spectacular coral reef and sea garden. This is an underwater area located close to Western Blue Cut and is in about 8 feet of water. st. pEtEr’s, tHEIr MAJEstIEs cHAppEll Duke of York StreetSituated in appropriate loftiness above the main street of St. George’s, St. Peter’s Church is one of the island’s most beloved landmarks and is the oldest anglican church continuously occupied in the New World. The first church on the site was constructed in 1612 of native cedar and a thatched roof. This original edifice was replaced seven years later by a more permanent structure that lasted almost a hundred years, until the hurricane of 1712. Following this disaster, the church was again rebuilt. Open Mon. - Sat. 10:00am-4:00pm. anglican service 11:15am Sundays.

tHE gloBE HotElGlobe Hotel, King’s Squareacross the street from St. Peter’s Church, this distinctive dwelling was built in 1700 by Governor Samuel Day. During the american Civil War its upper floor was occupied by a Confederate Shipping agent from where he organized the shipment of arms, uniforms and war supplies through the Union blockade to the South. It now houses the Confederate Museum and hosts the “Rogues and Runners” exhibit, highlighting Bermuda’s participation in the american Civil War. info: 441 297-1423

kIng’s squArETown of St. George The official, ceremonial centre of St. George’s, King’s Square acquired its name in 1818 when it was named in honour of King George III. Every Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday until November 30, 2011, the town crier, colorfully decked out in tunic, breeches and tricorn hat, rings his bell and shouts “Oyez! Oyez!” (Hear ye!). This is to convene his `tribunal,’ which will mete seventeenth-century justice to a nagging wench at the ducking stool nearby. By all means try out the stocks for yourself. This is a fun photo opportunity.

tHE unfInIsHEd cHurcH Duke of Kent Street, St. George’sThe impressive Gothic vestige that looms over the town of St. George’s was begun in 1870 as a replacement for St. Peter’s, which had fallen into a state of serious disrepair. Outside viewing only. The structure is unsafe – please heed the warning signs. Designed by William Hay, the Scottish-born architect who later drew the plans for Hamilton’s cathedral, the St. George’s church was abandoned in 1899 when near completion.

Shopaholic

Inspired by the colours and natural motifs of our beautiful Island, alexandra Mosher’s collections are a true reflection of Bermuda. Please tell us a little about your background and share with us a few steps that brought to where you are today. We had a frangipani tree in the back yard when I was little and I remember climbing up into the tree and pulling all the frangipanis down. I would string them up and make leis and necklaces for my family. One day, I read an article in Martha Stewart Living and saw an article featuring uncommon gemstones. I didn’t realize that one could buy them raw so I saved my pennies and took off for New york on the hunt for beautiful gems. I returned to Bermuda and started making pieces on Saturdays at Rock Island Coffee. I would display them in little frames and on the coffee table outside. Soon I was making custom pieces in my spare time and would bring them back the following week.

Little by little, it became more of a part time job and just over two years ago I gave up all other consulting work to make a go of it full time. There are so many moments when I have to pinch myself to be sure it’s all real. I’m so content, and so lucky to have an audience who “gets it” and be a part of their Bermuda story. Don’t get me wrong – it’s non-stop! Some nights I am in my home studio until the wee hours making things, after being at the shop all day. I’ve never worked harder, and never been happier.

tHe ColleCtIonSMy most popular collections are the Bermuda Reef Collection and Splash Collections that feature our famous pink Bermuda sand. The Melt Collection is totally abstract and organic. One of my favourites is the Caviar Collection, with sparkling pieces that catch the light. I also have a few new floral and lacy collections; perfect for brides and spring time.

tHe BrIDal ColleCtIon I’ve just recently gotten engaged and am bursting with excitement for everything bridal! I love customizing pieces for couples, incorporating their colour theme in the palette of gemstones and sand droplets we choose. I also design custom hairpieces, engagement rings and wedding bands. Love it all.

ShopaholictHe SHoPI have been at my current location for a year now but have only had it as my own space for the past few months. I never would have dreamed a year ago that I would have my own shop! I’ve had an online shop for years, and it actually won best Ecommerce website in 2011 at the Tech awards, but being able to receive customers is fantastic. Here people can just pass through casually and have a look. Just the other day I had a lady come by with joy in her eyes and she said, “I follow you on facebook and I met you at Harbour Nights, I had no idea you had a shop, this is so cool!” she must have spent about an hour in the shop looking at everything and finally she choose just the right pieces to treasure.

wISH lIStJewellery is so personal – so we have created a wish list and can keep a record of what our clients like. When a special occasion comes and someone wants to buy you a gift, drop a little hint that they can visit alexandra Mosher Studio Jewellery in the Washington Mall, and we’ll guide them in the right direction.

tHe leaVIng gIftI was surprised to realize that many people have been selecting one of my Bermuda-inspired pieces to give to as a leaving gift for someone who has been here for years and is taking off to start a new chapter of life. My work is a wonderful little treasure or memento that one can wear to remind them of their time in Bermuda. It’s special for me to be a part of that memory. Originally, I thought of the sand as a gift for tourists but it has grown and now it is really a gift for anyone who lives in or loves Bermuda.

Art MattersCelebrating textiles & Ingenuity: lynn MorrellBy LiSa HoWiE, DIRECTOR, BERMUDa NaTIONaL GaLLERy

While the word textile, for some, may conjure images of patterned quilts made from discarded fabric, I tend to think of fashion. I had the pleasure of spending time with the alexander McQueen exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of art in New york, 2011, and was completely awestruck at the ingenious and beautiful creations that went well beyond any definition or limitation placed on the word textile creating a new language of material expression.

another interpretation of textiles can be found in the current exhibition Women artists in the Bermuda National Gallery Collection, in which we feature the artwork of Bermudian artist Lynn Morrell. Unlike McQueen, whose textiles, as fashion, serve functional purposes, Morrell’s textiles reposition contemporary issues in innovative ways.

When we look closely at Morrell’s work we see layers and layers; she paints the material, distresses it with dyes, and creates dimensional qualities that echo paintings striving for depth. a close look at the pools

and trees in Morrell’s piece entitled Neighborhood (2004) reveals a play on perspective, intricacies in the sewn lines, and a detailed expression that generates the atmosphere of this local environment.

Quite differently, on the opposite wall, is the diptych In Memoriam Fabrorum (2011), a piece that was previously included in the Re-interpreting the European Collection, in which Morrell replied to the Cornelis de Vos Portrait of Lady (c.1610-40). She focused on the garment worn by the lady, paying close attention to the details in the lace, the ruff and the subtle embellishments that made the persona an object of beauty. Morrell sees, indeed feels for, the unseen hands, which quite possibly completed this fine garment under poor candlelit conditions, for limited wages.

“as a contemporary textile artist, Lynn Morrell manipulates fabric to create a complex narrative inspired by social, historical, political and environmental issues. These works are founded on strong concepts that are layered with meanings, but are also intuitive and exquisitely beautiful,” adds BNG Curator Sophie Cressall.

In her textile cum canvas, Morrell stitches the shapes of unseen hands, captures the fine coral beads, embellishes the silk, and includes an abstracted ruff. Might this be the discarded material, waylaid by the seamstress? Or is this a new narrative– a story of the weaver, the dress-maker, the artisan? The purposeful unfinished-ness further suggests that the story is incomplete or the history untold. Join us to have a closer look.

Looking back in time, do you recall the first special image you captured that made you realize you would become a photographer?I do. I had always wanted to be a dancer, but in university I injured my knee so that path was no longer an option. I decided to take a semester off and went to work at a winery in France. I was invited to ride in a balloon one afternoon. We were floating over the vines, and passed a chateau ruin. I photographed the balloon’s shadow on the rough, crumbling wall of the ruin. at that very moment, I knew photography was what I wanted to pursue. So I returned to university and obtained a Bachelor of Fine art. That was 25 years ago and I have been shooting since. It is amazing though how much I have learned since then, both by trial and error and in reading the blog’s of other photographers. I attended a flower workshop in March that José Villa was photographing. I have admired his work for years, so it was incredible to watch him shoot.

as one of Bermuda’s favourite wedding and portrait photographers, can you please share with our readers that special location that is just perfect for capturing memories?I don’t really have a favourite location, I like to work with my clients to find places that are meaningful to them. That way I get to shoot in all sorts of places, which keeps things interesting. I just tend to recommend the time of day to be sure we get the best light. I also enjoy collaborating with my clients to create unique images that tell a story and make the session itself more enjoyable.

you have recently started a new adventure with Bermuda Bride’s nikki Begg. together you have reinvented Petals, Bermuda’s favourite creative florists. Please tell us about the new boutique, the objet d’art gallery and your vision for friday’s flowers.Nikki and I have worked together for over a decade but the Petals reinvention began when Nikki was asked to participate in a competition organised by Destination Weddings & Honeymoons magazine. Together, we created the concept and gathered all the items for the shoot. Leading up to the shoot, we discussed how wonderful it would be to travel the world to find objets d’art; to bring unusual pieces into the island all with a common theme of gardens and flowers. Nikki is not afraid to test the boundaries of style putting pieces together in an unexpected way; and I see all the tiny details and find beauty in unexpected places. We love how our visions collide and come together in a very cohesive way.

I have always wanted a gallery in Hamilton and Nikki has always wanted a flower shop. We felt that in combining our visions we could create something quite unique. Petals has a fabulous reputation for creating exquisite floral designs; now we would like to change the way people see and experience flowers. Be it a flower’s botanical or generic name, the sentiment, memory or feelings they evoke, or even homeopathic remedies. We have found some wonderful sources and will be bringing in a wider variety of blooms and objects from the far reaches of the world.

The shop will also feature my flower inspired artwork. I have been experimenting with various mediums and the flowers have provided me immeasurable joy. The images are also featured on the Petals blog. Each Thursday, I photograph the flowers as soon as they arrive and Nikki, inspired by the images shares her musings on the flowers and on life.

Born and raised in Cape Town, South africa, Jacqueline alma studied Graphic Design at a time before computers; she focused on photography, typography, illustration and history but always held a real passion for painting.

what inspires you to paint living in Bermuda?Nature inspires me; I often walk on the beach early mornings and collect things to sketch. When I first arrived in Bermuda I noticed that there were not many contemporary portraits of local Bermudians. The portraits I did see seemed to focus on individuals sitting in their finery. I saw another side to life on the island and began developing a passion for local Bermudians. I wanted to gain a deeper understanding about their lives, background, childhood, likes, dislikes and views on life.

Please tell us about the painting titled “Shallow waters” that is now a part of the women artists in the Bermuda national gallery Collection. My subject is a young Bermudian named Kenton. I met him at the gym. He had such a powerful physique, which initially I found quite intimidating. as I got to know him I discovered he writes beautiful poetry as a means of expressing the difficult times in his life. We worked together in my studio for a period of time where I got to know him and learned more about him. During the project, I asked him to write a poem on the backdrop of the set where I painted him. It’s an integral part of the painting.

Golfport roYAl: DeManDIng But faIrBy kim SWan JP, TEaCHING PROFESSIONaL

Golfing at Port Royal Golf Course in Bermuda is as challenging as anyseaside course found throughout the world. Port Royal Golf Course has areputation of being a fair test of golf - not overly punitive - but punishing of poor, careless or reckless shots.Choosing a high percentage shot is essential at Port Royal Golf Course, considered a thinking person’s golf course, that not only rewards conventional smart golf but still offers the opportunity to play the old fashion ‘bump and run’.

The recently remodeled Port Royal Golf Course layout allows the wind to influence most holes, offering stunning views looking in all directions. The greens have been elevated making approach shots more demanding and the bunkers are much deeper.

Bump and RunGood course management can deliberately put the golfer in a more favourable spot to play the reliable bump and run shot. at Port Royal Golf Course, at least 12 holes afford golfers the option - if your shot is properly positioned - to deliberately roll the ball on to the green. This shot requires skill, precision and regular practice but when mastered, can make a huge difference and help to lower your score.

It is one of the first shots that we teach our students at the Port Royal Golf Development coaching sessions. 1. The technique for the bump and run requires club head control through good rhythm up and down the target line using a mini golf swing. 2. Mastering a proper mini swing enhances a full swing

negotiating the WindThe wind blows from all directions during the course of a year, which makes playing each hole at Port Royal Golf Course a different experience, thus making shot selection critical when playing Port Royal.

Our focus at the Port Royal Golf Developmental Program is to simplify your golf by narrowing your focus to delivering the club face squarely at the ball repeatedly - when the club face points at the target during impact with ball, and, the club shaft travels down and through on plane - the result is a quality golf shot.

Take dead aimTo achieve this objective the golfer must have a visual image of ball flying straight at its intended trajectory heading towards the intended target. Proper aim is critical to consistently hitting solid shots thus making the ball go where yOU want it to go.

our Teaching StylesThe teaching methods we employ are greatly influenced by our experiences at Port Royal Golf Course. Head Golf Professional Dwayne Pearman and myself as the Teaching Pro have won five Bermuda Open titles between us at Port Royal Golf Course where we have relied on the shots we call our bread and butter shots. Notwithstanding, our focus is on hitting solid shots, executing shots that work under pressure and the short game.

For this article our aim was to share with you the methodology of the low bump and run shot, a shot that when executed properly works and alleviates self induced pressure.

Bermuda’s HistoryGLImPses of

Carving up the IslandBy dR. EdWaRd HaRRiS, M.B.E

Bermuda is like a lump of vanilla ice cream perched on a wide cone of basalt, the black, glassy rock that is the result of millions of years of underwater extrusions from a hole to the centre of the Earth. The island is essentially, and quintessentially, a ‘house of sand’, the product of the death and degradation of trillions of creatures of coral and other sea life. During the Ice ages, when sea levels at Bermuda were lowered several hundred feet, as the water was locked up in the well-frozen Poles and in continental glaciers. In the inter-glacial periods, beaches were formed, due to the higher water levels, as coral and shells were ground up in the prehistoric surf. Great winds blew the pinkish sand into sand dunes, which eventually consolidated into rock through the action of rainwater and drying. That geological process continues to this day.

Culturally writing, Bermuda was thus blessed, upon settlement in July 1612, with remarkable hills of soft and hard limestone, just the ticket for making stone fortifications, houses and other buildings. Limestone had been the building block of choice for several thousand years and most of the wonders of the ancient, and not so ancient, world were constructed of that remarkable rock. Limestone may also be burnt with wood or coal to produce quicklime, which, when combined with water creates limewash, the paint of a thousand generations of humanity. Combined with sand, quicklime makes mortar, which is the glue by which buildings are cemented into existence.

For four centuries, limestone has been quarried from the hills of Bermuda, with particularly good stone coming from sites in Warwick and Southampton Parishes. Before the age of the chainsaw, it was grueling work, using hand tools, especially large saws, some of which took two men to use. The stone today is mostly used for ornamental structures, such as garden walls.

Heritage Matters

Bermuda’s Biggest rMl Magazine By dR. EdWaRd HaRRiS, M.B.E.

Trying to change set “facts” is like rolling a pile of jail-nuts up Lighthouse Hill; while some are being moved up, the others are running back down to the South Shore Road. One such wayward “fact” is the description of a photograph of the gunpowder magazine on agar’s Island as “the Causeway to St. George’s under construction”, so published on a number of occasions.

The photograph shows black workmen standing on the walls and vaulted roofs of a structure under construction. In the background is a narrow body of water with land rising behind, a geographical configuration that cannot be matched at the Causeway, completed in 1871. The walls are not continuous, which is what would be expected if the rooms were tunnels to allow the waters of Castle Harbour to wash through into Ferry Reach. The division between the walls is thus a corridor. The roof of the rooms are arched and made of half a dozen courses of brick, which would be overkill for a horse and carriage roadway of the 1870s. No hurricane would have ever budged this structure, as Hurricane Fabian did so effectively to the real Causeway in .This picture records the only know view of the construction of one of Bermuda forts and magazines in the great rebuilding of the late 1860s. It also records that Bermudians were carrying out the building of those structures, under the supervision of the Royal Engineers. Given the geography and architecture captured in this early photograph, the building can only be the huge Rifled Muzzle Loader powder magazine on agar’s Island, which forms the north side of Two Rock Passage into Hamilton Harbour. In the later 1850s, the English developed a cannon that could be loaded from the rear, for better sealing and effective use of the propellant. This gun also had a barrel with twisted rifling to impart a spin to the new elongated projectiles, a major departure from the round cannon ball of the previous three centuries. These guns revolutionized the world of artillery and began the modern arms race. Their existence led to the development of iron ships and to the remodeling of old forts and the building of new ones, such as Scaur Hill Fort in the 1870s. Once again, Bermuda was in for an economic bonanza created by the construction of military works throughout the island.

The gunpowder magazines at Agar’s Island under construction about 1880, with the mainland of Point Shares in the background.

Page 73: test

www.thisweek.bm 73

Heritage Matters

The new gun was called a Rifled Breech Loader, or RBL and was made of wrought iron. a fundamental design flaw in the RBL led to the making of wrought iron Rifled Muzzle Loaders, or RMLs. Bermuda possesses four RBLs and 46 RMLs: two of the latter were found under the grass in the Keep yard of the National Museum some years ago.Two free standing RBL/RML gunpowder magazines were built in the 1870s, one on Boaz Island and the other on agar’s Island. The commodious magazines and light passages in the agar’s building were used to create the first aquarium in Bermuda in the 1920s. an explosives magazine it was first, a watery attraction secondly, but a causeway never.

The floor plan of the magazine at Agar’s Island shows it was the largest such storage depot in Bermuda until 1900.

Built in 1913 for the adelaide Steamship Company, the 411-foot ‘Willochra’ served as a troopship during World War I and was sold to Furness Withy in 1919, refitted and renamed ‘Fort Victoria’. Initially operated by the Quebec Steamship Company, she was transferred to the Bermuda & West Indies Steamship Company in 1921. Both companies were owned by Furness Whithy. On December 18th 1929, ‘Fort Victoria’ left New york Harbour for Bermuda with 269 passengers and 165 crew members on board. In dense fog, ‘Fort Victoria’ anchored off Sandy Hook Light at the entrance to the Hudson River to await better weather conditions, when she was hit by the SS ‘algonquin’. all on board ‘Fort Victoria’ were rescued before the ship sank later that day.

The youngest passenger on board was 3-month old Warren Brown, later to become one of Bermuda’s best-known sailors, setting the fastest time in the Marion-Bermuda Race and sailing over 200,000 miles in his 61-foot sloop ‘War Baby’.

The ‘Fort Victoria’ lay on her side in the middle of the shipping lane for over a year. Using 25 tons of dynamite she was finally demolished and dragged to a clearance of 50 feet of water. What is left of her now is completely buried in the muddy bottom. To replace the Fort Victoria, Furness Whithy contracted with the Vickers-armstrong shipyard to build the SS Monarch of Bermuda, which entered service in 1933.
