We began our journey into this business armed solely with one second hand ambulance, 3 staff and an incredible passion for what we were doing. with brief experience in the ambulance services industry we set out to make our idea a reality, after years of working for other people, we were confident that we could put all the experience that we had acquired into practice and create a service that is truly outstanding and beneficial to the hospitals and patients that use us.

little did we know how our original idea would evolve, well beyond our initial expectations, into a vibrant and successful business and become an integral part of the ambulance services industry across the north east and beyond.

we started out with a small office at bishop auckland providing ambulance transport and health and Safety training but over the following years, the business grew to the extent that we were obliged to look for new premises and consequently moved in 2009 to bowburn, just outside of durham city.

Since relocating we have experienced a huge increase in activity allowing us to achieve a healthy turnover that is well into seven figures for the past two years and we now have plans to more than double in size by 2015. we put our growth down to the quality, flexibility and diversity of the services we provide.

Wayne Hall, Managing Director says, “A surge in the number of requests for help from hospitals across the region for transportation of very large patients has prompted the latest move. The new ambulances can carry patients who weigh up to 50 stone offering a safe and dignified transport solution to those whose weight, or condition require more specialist transport. We appreciate that delays in discharge can cost hospitals thousands of pounds while blocking beds and that is something we can now help with at short notice.”

A one ton electric winch assists in the loading and unloading of the Megasus bariatric stretcher, specialist seating, air suspension, lifting equipment, air conditioning, heating system and privacy glass all add to the patient experience and comfort.

Joanne Hall, Commercial Director says “It is important that we can offer first class ambulance services to the whole community, and size should not be a barrier to patient care. Medical Services (North East)

is in an ideal position to offer this service and we need to be able to support our local hospitals, patients and NHS Trusts.”

All of the staff working with this group of patients are given additional training which includes understanding bariatric needs, specialist moving and handling of the bariatric patient, risk assessments, and training on all equipment used. Tracey Carr, from Bolton was on hand to offer advice and support and also explain what it was like to be an obese person and allowed herself to be used as a live demonstration model so staff could practise specialist handling techniques during the training sessions.

Miss Carr, who runs her own website, www.fatlotsheknows.co.uk, said: “There’s a lot of guilt associated with being large and a lot of fear that people will hurt themselves helping us.” She appealed for people to show more compassion towards very large patients.

Whether it’s a one off transfer or a contracted daily discharge service we are very confident we can save you a considerable amount of money on what you may already be paying for Ambulance transport.

our daily charges are around 20% more cost effective than other providers and long distance transfers are hugely different with savings of 50% or more. A lot of hospital staff are unaware that their hospital have to pay extra for ambulance transport to locations such as Leeds, London, Cumbria and beyond. Commonly referred to as ECr’s (Extra Contractual requirements) these transfers are charged for in addition to any contract you may have and many hospitals now choose to outsource these jobs.

As well as the cost savings, these transfers can usually be done the same day, we can make booking these transfers easy and save you money, ask us for a quote.

Medical Services (North East) Limited have just received a glowing report from the Care Quality Commission following our latest inspection on 17th November.

Furthermore, we are currently implementing the brand new BS EN ISo 22301:2012 Business Continuity Management System and have our stage one assessment in February 2013.
